He was graduated at Yale in 1815, and also studied at Andover theological seminary. Many years before his death, in connection with Rev. Thomas H. Gallaudet, he labored in the preparation of religious books for the young. He was for more than twenty years secretary of the Connecticut missionary society, and was for several years chaplain of the insane retreat at Hartford. As a writer he was distinguished for the elegance and purity of his style.
This book features the dialogues between a mother and her children (and their close relatives) on the issues pertaining to the Sabbath. Society and some close family members challenge the mother's beliefs and commitments to keeping the Sabbath. Subsequently the mother enters into a series of nightly talks with the children concerning the importance of the keeping of the Sabbath and the evils of it's profination. We read this book as a family, and I intend to buy each of my children their own copy to keep for the future.
