The ultimate Chanukah gift--a glorious celebration of the true spirit of the holiday from a pop-up master and an acclaimed poet.
Open this beautiful gift book and follow the Festival of Lights through place and time--from Herod's temple to a shtetl in Russia; from a refugee ship bound for the New World to an Israeli kibbutz. Inspired by Michael J. Rosen's reverent poem, Robert Sabuda's striking pop-ups depict each night's menorah in a different scene, using such imagery as desert tents, olive trees, and a final panorama of skyscrapers. Sure to be a treasured family heirloom, this stunning collaboration showcases the spirit and resilience of a people in search of home.
Rosen's Website should provide all this and more. It's http://www.fidosopher.com. Nonetheless: Michael J. Rosen is an American author and illustrator with over 120 books of fiction, nonfiction, humor, picture books, poetry, and more. With a strong interest in nature and animals, reflecting his animal behavior degree from Ohio State University, Rosen resides within a peaceful crease of Central Ohio with his pack of animal companions that include 2 small koi ponds he helped build on the 100 acres he shares in the foothills of the Ohio Appalachians. An avid dog lover, he was inspired by Chant, his newest Australian stumpy-tail cattle dog, which led to the creation of his newest book of fiction, The Tale of Rescue, which will be released in October 2015. With an MFA in poetry from Columbia University, Rosen also showcases his skills and talents in other projects such as The Maine Coon’s Haiku: And Other Poems for Cat Lovers (2015).
amazingly constructed khanike pop up book! I can't believe that they let this check out at a library! for each night, a beautiful scene of the history of Jewish settlement and migration. actual pop ups are simple white but are incredibly intricate enough to symbolize whole cities and towns. highly recommended, just maybe read together with kids. I could imagine this getting ruined.
Beautiful text and amazingly intricate white paper pop-ups make this lovely book especially memorable. The creators include eight different scenes where Jews celebrate the miracle of a single lamp that burned for eight days in a temple. Thus, there are eight different scenes, including those of the desert where a tent has been staked, scenes aboard ships on which refugees long for home, even in an olive grove in the Promised Land. The final scene focuses on a cityscape with touches of pastel blues, purples, and pinks, and towering above the book's pages, a menorah with golden tips. This is the kind of book that should be shared with all members of the family for its message of hope and continuity but also for the stunning pop-ups. Every time I look at the book, I notice something different.
This is a beautiful, reverent poem for each night of Chanukah highlighting journeys of the Jewish people. Robert Sabuda's paper engineering captures the essence of each portion in intricate detail. I loved looking for the menorah flames at each turn of page. This book serves to honor, introduce and peek a person's curiosity about celebrations, traditions and history.
Loved it. My daughter gave me this magical artful book for Chanukah. We have loved his work in the past. a I have even sent cards from the Museum of Modern Art featuring his work. We are delighted by the skill and artistry of his Chanukah book. This one excels them all and I will be reading it tonight as part of a Chanukah service at my shul.
Happy Chanukah everyone. Be sure to check out Michael Rosen's poem, illustrated with some brilliant paper engineering by Robert Sabuda. Lovely and meaningful.
