Scoring Lacey

Rate this book
Lacey Magerin never expected her husband of twenty years to leave her for a twenty-two year old. She never expected her fifteen-year-old daughter to blame her for the divorce. Lacey also never expected Shayne Donnelly. The NHL goalie is her brother's best friend and is ten years younger than her. Neither of them know the rules in this new game but that's not stopping either of them from playing or finding love in the least likely place - on home ice.

Woo Hoo!! Yes .. ! What a WONDERFUL read. Loved it. Loved the story! These two were so extraordinary. They made my heart hurt. It was a simple, heartwarming, smexy story. I can't wait to read more by this Canadian author.

What did I like?
1 -- Character. This book could be classed as a short book, not a short story, but a short book. Even so, you never felt slighted in the story. Do I wish it were longer, YES, but am okay it wasn't. Lacey and Shayne .. they were richly developed. The backstory wasn't deep, but just enough. The secondary characters, just the same. Not deep, but just enough. She kept the focus on the primaries; Lacey and Shayne.
2 -- I love a story with a sport theme. I just do. I am a sports lover and know enough to be dangerous about most. This one was hockey. Shayne is a goalie for a Houston pro team. Lacey's parent run a hockey school. They give kids a great education, but also offer quality ice time.
3 -- The relationship between these two. I've never been fond of the older woman, younger guy thing. I a firm believer in a good relationship knows no boundaries. Love should be treasured where ever found. So, she was older .. big deal. I thought the way the author handled this was absolutely perfect. It was a consideration, but didn't derail the story.
4 -- The author's writing. This book just flowed. Never a glitch in the story telling. She really has talent. I just bought her other book. It is supposed to be a Dom/Sub book. So not me at all, but I liked this one so much, I'm willing to give it a try and have faith [hope it is not mis-placed], that she will handle this other story just as perfectly as this one. She has some really HOT scenes, but not for the sake of it. It does add to the relationship and isn't just space filler. I wouldn't say I'm an erotica reader and I think this would class as erotica or erotica light, but don't let that put you off. This author does a really nice job.

My review may be as long as this book, but just feel so happy to have found such a book and have added a new author to my list. Just simply lovely!!

Happy Reading!

Scoring Lacey was a quick, HOT, and surprisingly, emotional read. Layne, the hero, burned the clothes right off my body with his dirty talking, it was some of the best I have ever read. He had me blushing with his control and direct talk, it was phenomenal. The attraction between Lacey and Layne was out of this world. When they were together it was like nobody else was around. I was nervous they were going to get caught. They would be bbqing at a party with everyone in the kitchen, or slip away at Lacey’s parent’s house to a guest room with the whole family around, or in Lacey’s house with kids and get down and dirty. Not sure I agreed with some of the chances they were taking and at times I was uncomfortable with decisions Lacey made because she was a mom, but it sure was thrilling and daring.

I know I covered my thoughts on the sex, but there was a really touching story at the heart of this book. Layne was 10 years younger than Lacey and he was Lacey's brother's, best friend. They all grew up in a small town in Canada where Layne attended Lacey’s family’s hockey school. Layne went off to become the top goalie in the NHL and comes back for a fundraiser for the school. There was never an attraction when Lacey and Layne were younger, he was a part of her hockey family, like a little brother.

Lacey has just gone through a very tough divorce that has wounded her, but has severely affected her teenage daughter. I had some tearful moments watching the interaction between Lacey and Carmen, her daughter. The girl was so lost and the struggles both mother and daughter endured seemed very realistic.

When Lacey and Layne embark on their wild affair they both know it can only end in heartbreak and there was plenty of heartbreak. Layne made a speech about “can’ts” that was unforgettable and stirring to me.

Definitely recommend Scoring Lacey.

Scoring Lacey is one of those books that I’ll end up comparing other books to. It’s a satisfying story with warm and well written characters. I like everything about this book.

I don't have a ton to say about this book. Generally I avoid erotic romance because I think it combines the worst parts of erotica and romance into a porny romp lacking a substantial plot. However, a couple of the Dear Author bloggers liked this one, and it features a NHL player, so I figured I'd give it a go.

Long story short, it failed to challenge my opinion of erotic romance. The first half is the sex Olympics, the second half the crying game, and then the book just ends abruptly, like her laptop ran out of juice. Thank heavens for the "THE END" written on the last page or I'd have thought I had an incomplete file. There's barely any character development, way too much sex in extremely inappropriate situations (outside a glass patio door at a family barbecue? impromptu buttsecks in her work office?) and a scatterbrained plot. Editing also left a bit to be desired, as there were a number of continuity errors that threw me out of the story.

If you just want a one-handed read, the first half has some pretty hot sex. If you want a complete story, however, this one's sorely lacking.

Claudette's Review

I love when a novel has the emotional depth to really draw you into the story and make the characters seem real to you. This is definitely one of those. This novel isn’t so much about an older woman and a younger man, but about two people who’ve known each other for years, who suddenly really look at each other and it’s as if they are meeting for the first time. Hockey player, Shane Donnelly sees Lacey Magerin at a charity fundraiser and just looking at her with her back to him is nearly floored by the jarring bolt of lust he feels for her. Their attraction is complicated by the fact that his best friend is her brother, and that her youngest child, fifteen year old Carmen, is both bitter and acting out after her parents divorce.

This isn’t a rebound affair; Lacey’s marriage had been over long before she formally ended it. Her ex’s adultery really knocked her self-confidence and she has two daughters to concentrate on. Lacey is a woman dealing with all the smelly brown stuff that life throws at her, and doing it with strength and maturity. In many ways she could be anyone of us. And Shane looks at her and sees a goddess. No matter how much of an ego boost it is to be pursued by a younger man, in many ways the timing is all wrong. Her daughter’s attitude and behavior is making every day a battle. I love how sensitive Shane is to Lacey’s pain. Even before he admits to himself how he feels about her, he’s always there to comfort and support her. Shane is great hero material, sexy, funny, and understanding, I could go on but I won’t. His father was an abusive drunk, so hockey was his means of shaking the town’s dust off his feet; he rarely comes back as a result.

I enjoyed how Ms Howard makes it really obvious to the reader that these two people are in love, long before they realize it or admit it to themselves. I am making a note of this author’s name, as Ms Howard knows how to write a hotly erotic romance and combine it with well defined characterization and a really great story. I rate this one with the full five teacups.

5 Tea Cups!

This was a quick read.....jumped right into the steamy parts. I felt this book could have been a little bit longer. The characters could've been developed better, plus there were 2 characters that were secondary that it was hinted they had secrets but then they never revealed them. I am hoping that Shannon and Todd have a book written for them because there was some story not finished. I don't like when things aren't resolved in a book. Also the ending was quite abrupt.

I really enjoyed this story of Lacey and Shayne. They were smoking hot and had unbelievable chemistry. Whew, the mouth on Shayne! I liked how the story developed and the additional layer with Lacey's teenage daughter. I loved her relationship with her brother Todd. It was all going great, but at about 90%, things started moving in fast forward and I felt like a lot was skipped over that I wanted to know more about! My issues below: Possible SPOILERS: don't read below if you don't want any spoilers!! So, like I said, I was loving it, but I felt the BBQ toward the end was odd... I couldn't believe Shayne asked her to have everyone leave because he wanted her to himself! There wasn't any interaction with the people at her house... Did they leave? What mom has sex in the lawn furniture with her daughter and whole family inside? What was the deal with Todd and Shannon? Nothing developed there even after we were told something was wrong with Todd repeatedly and Shannon said she messed something up and Lacey was the last person she could tell??? I mean, I think i know that they were together, but it was never mentioned again or resolved at all! Is there a sequel I'm not aware of that will get in to all these hanging story lines? And, just because she goes to see Shayne and says she won't let him go, how will they resolve the remaining issue of their distance? He can't leave Houston and she has a daughter in high school that begged her not to send her away! My other big issue is, even though I loved Shayne and KNOW he loved Lacey, he never admitted it to her or anyone! He left things in a pretty shitty place with Todd. There was so much story left and instead, I feel like it ended abruptly, prematurely and unsatisfactorily.... Even though you are led to believe they get their happily ever after! I'm glad I read it because I really enjoyed it, but now I want the rest of the story please!

Expected more from this book, it was really good story, but something was missing. Not to mention that the ending was just not something you call ending, more something in the lines I'm going to write anther book about this two. I wish!

I really enjoyed this story. I'm never sure going in what to expect, especially with an author that's new to me, but this was such a great story. And it was longer than I expected. (Kindle doesn't always give me a good estimation of length.) I loved watching Lacey and Shayne's relationship build, and my heart broke every time either one of them thought of him leaving. I also ached for Lacey and her daughter. And I ached for Shayne and Todd's friendship. I cried. A few times. I rarely cry for a story. Maybe because I normally don't choose stories that make me cry. But ultimately this was such a great story. Now I need to know what's going on with Lacey's brother, Todd.

I'm going to say the following and it's going to be SUPER judgmental (and y'all prob will find it offensive), but I feel like this is the only phrase that can fully encompass my feelings in regards to this story and the characters in it: only white people.

Seriously.

Sigh, I wanted more cougar like drama. And more best friend's little sister drama. That should've been double the angst. Worst part, was the editing. Payne and Shayne? Those two names got all mixed around.

And that ending??????????????????? Gives new meaning to word "abrupt".

Loved this! A quick steamy (very steamy) read with a surprising amount of character development. One of my favourite tropes - older woman/younger man, and a hockey player to boot!

WHOA! One hot read, this one goes down on my favorite’s shelf for 2012. A great BIG thank you to Wendy and Michelle for this rec. Bk totally surprised me. Expected this to be a mostly sports related (hockey) whim-wham-thank-you-ma'am sex romp. The developing story between Shayne and Lacey wasn't just a showcase for mindless sex scenes. Actually a very good story with some depth, good dialogue, interesting characters with romantic drama and delish smoldering schmexy sex with a sweet love story. Lacey and Shayne (older h, younger H) had some intense chemistry and were believable as a couple with the age difference never seeming to be a big issue. Shayne was some kinda hot, but after time on the ice, the man was an animal (keep a fan and a cold drink on hand - whew!). This was a shorter read than most (which I’m not usually a fan of) but flowed well and never seemed rushed. The story actually develops interestingly enough that the HEA at the end makes sense. I would have loved a longer story but I wasn’t left feeling empty handed. I did have a few questions, but not about the H/h. Todd, Lacey’s brother still seemed upset ever after the big reveal but that never got resolved in my mind (was it still the Lacey/Shayne relationship or something more?). Shannon, Lacey’s best friend, was upset about something but we were never old what (I was suspecting maybe she and Todd had a thing. Too similar to the H/h story? Probably). Was hoping the author might write another story here, mostly wishful thinking on my part I’m sure, but I’d gladly read more about Shayne/Lacey and Lacey’s family.

Hot, goody goodness! What a steamy book. Had to stick my head in the freezer a few times. Shayne and Lacey essentially grew up together but.... Lacey is about ten years older! Yes, a younger man/older woman romance. One of my favorite tropes! Loved it! Shayne, an NHL player, comes to town to attend a fundraiser for a hockey school he attended when he was a kid that was run by Lacey's father, his coach. He sees Lacey at the party and is struck dumb. When did she get so sexy!? Lacey just divorced her husband of twenty years who was sleeping with a 20 year old. She has two daughters, one of whom, a very angry teenager. The chemistry between Shayne and Lacey was nuclear! Oh the sexy times, the dirty talk - just wonderful. It was also, surprisingly, emotional. Shayne actually hates the town because of his family life and only plans to be there a short time. Lacey's whole life is in the town. Both the H and the h were nicely developed characters. And a great shout out to the secondary characters. This was a short book but each character was multi-dimensional. I scouted around for a sequel or at least an epilogue but nothing. But just a lovely, short, very hot read.

I'm a sucker for sports books and for older woman/younger man romances. This fit the bill to a tee. He is a 29 year old cocky, seemingly self confident NHL goalie from Canada who goes home for a fundraiser and runs into the 39 year old sister of his best friend (the best friend being the same age as the hockey player). The sister has two kids and has recently been divorced. She used to babysit the now hockey player and her brother years ago. Well, of course, sparks fly and much to her surprise she cannot resist his charms (and much to her families disapproval). It is quite a steamy relationship until he needs to return to his U.S. hockey team for a new season. There is some angst and a little heartbreak and, of course for me, the inevitable HEA. I read this book easily in a day and enjoyed all of it.

this book could have been so much more...
i couldn't connect with the characters at all. it think I'm being a little nice by giving this book 3 stars..
this is half a damn book that's what this is. it ended so abruptly i was left sitting there like wtf.
they had problems...
they ignored their problems....
their problems caught up with them...
....then they ignore their problems again!!!
without figuring out a damn thing!!! ugh as im writing this review i am just getting angrier and angrier at the laziness of the writing of the story...I'm so annoyed i feel like going back to give this book 1 star.
I'm sorry but not worth your time...

This book was just okay for me. I think I might have liked it more if I would've read it at a different time. The story line was predictable, the chemistry felt forced, and the ending was a little disappointing. Don't worry though, it was happy. However, this story had two things going for it to earn at least the rating I gave it. One. I love hockey and our hero is a bona fide hockey hottie. Two. The heroine is older than our hero and I do like those types of stories. So aside from that, those are the two big positives about this story.

I ordinarily do not read the Brothers Best friend troupe but I really liked this book. I would have given it a 4.5 or even a 5 if the ending would have given me more instead of ending so quickly. Other then that I enjoyed this super steamy read.
