For Mary Callaghan marriage has brought heartaches and disappointment. But with it have come joys, the greatest of which are her daughters, Daisy and Nell. Mary longs for them to have the one thing denied to her -- a husband who will offer them kindness, security and love. But when Daisy confesses she's pregnant, Mary knows the future looks grim, for the father's a rough, pleasure-loving man. As Nell watches her sister sink into bitter poverty, and as the world around her grows more uncertain, with war more likely by the day, risking all for love seems to Nell a foolish game...

I truly wanted to like this book but the writing style really turned me off. I thought the first part was good but things went downhill when I noticed that the author kept writing comments for every situation that'd happened in the story. Not only that but the comments were extremely obvious.
*Ben has broken his ankle* Ben felt cold. Icy cold. What has happened to him? A broken ankle! And no more late night walks! He would never be able to walk properly now! He lay back, staring up at the ceiling, the tears slowly trickling down his cheeks.
I love how the author vividly describes everything. I also love how the author centers God in the lives of the characters in their situations. It's a shame that it ended so fast.
I started reading Lyn Andrews books many many years ago, and I'd actually forgotten how good they are.
Her sagas always have a great amount of realism, to them and feature a strong set of hard working, quite often hard up characters, but where community spirit always wins through.
An absolutely heart warming read. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I did feel, however, that it lacked emotion in parts I would expect to be a lot more heart wrenching. Other than that I highly recommend it!
Just read this in a couple of days, I think I might have read it before but not sure. Anyway, classic Lyn Andrews...everything I love about her books, poverty, heartbreak, love, war, family etc etc
