This landmark book shows how the old model of corporate sustainability and responsibility is being replaced by a second generation movement that goes beyond the outmoded approach of CSR as philanthropy or public relations concern to a more authentic, stakeholder-driven model. The author describes the new concept and mission of the new movement and explains its agenda in a succinct guide that will be useful for CSR professionals, including managers, consultants, academics, and non-governmental organizations.
I will not call this book inspirational but it does really reveals the veil, and tells/dissects CSR for what it really is.
Do not have any misconceptions that companies doing CSR will be the one to save the world. Governments must step in as there are just already subsidies for incumbents that skew the competition.
The author criticizes CSR, which he views as corporate sustainable responsibility rather than corporate social responsibility. His criticism about disingenuous businesses that abuse CSR for their image is rather interesting.
Visser contemplates new possibilities for businesses to develop a different kind of CSR in the future: CSR 2.0: Creativity, Scalability, Responsiveness, Glocality, and Circularity.
Overall, the book has a good premise but I personally wasn't very inspired by it.
