I'm a mom, a wife, a teacher, a reader, and a writer. I'm also an lunatic when it comes to the NFL and playing Fantasy football, especially if I don't get my first pick quarterback: Tony Romo. When I'm not at home or work, you can probably catch me on the 15 freeway singing my heart out and dancing away in my car.
Looking for a good YA read? Then you need to read this! Spoiler Free Review Author to look-out for!!! 3.5 to 4 STARS Genre: YA Romance Series: Book #1 in Double Threat Series
Friendships are tested when Sex, drugs, Boys and Betrayal try to drive a wedge in between four freshmen High School females inSo I'm a Double Threat
My typical teen romance revolves around a teenager who has struggled with a traumatic life experience or has been faced with impossible odds this book however is more of an 'How to Deal' type story. Where you have typical teens with typical everyday problems/issues. We all remember our first crush. We all remember our first heartbreak. Well reading as these teens experience all the drama that comes with going to high school made my brain flood with images....
Seriously I found myself so caught up with these teens lives that my heart ached when their heart did. The MC Meg is hilarious she is the only child and lives in a two parent home. Meg has three best girlfriends Amy, Steph, and Keesha. All are double threats. A Double threat is someone who has the brains and popularity. All of them are also fun and sassy in their own ways. The book starts with the summer ending and the girls have been invited to their very first high school party. Remember those?? At the party Meg can't wait to see the guy she has been crushing on all summer Alex Aguilar. A high school Senior. Alex is currently dating Steph's older sister Lydia. But Meg is not worried Lydia goes through guys as quickly as the weekly recycle truck! As time moves on sure enough Lydia and Alex break up. That same night following the breakup the girls attend a party. Meg knows this is her night; Alex who has shown some interest in her will finally makes his move. And he does only its with Amy her best friend.
Meg moves on and accepts that she can't have Alex. However when Alex makes it clear that he was interested in her Meg is floored. The two share an obvious attraction to each other. One that does not go unnoticed...
Thoughts I really enjoyed this book i must admit at first i did not think i would. The beginning was filled with a lot of inner monologue by the mc Meg. But once the other characters came into play the story really picked up. This group of girlfriends rocked i loved their personalities, nationalities and body types. The story flowed at a pretty good pace the character dynamics was good. And the parents are very much involved in the lives of these kids. A WIN in my book!! The only dislike i had was with Alex and his reasons for not dating Meg which i will explain in detail in my characters section. I am a huge fan now Ms. Julie Prestsater! Meg- I adored her she was hilarious! She had an awesome personality plus she was pretty though she found her size unattractive. It did not seem to bother the boys. Her and Alex had good chemistry. I look forward to reading more of her in book2. Keesha- Fun, sassy, witty and did not hold back. She gave it to you no matter how it might hurt your feelings. She was a straight shooter. It hurt to see some of the things that changed in her but in the end she found her way. Amy- Hmmmmmm... This chick was confusing she did things one minute that showed how much she loves her friends and then another second it was like she didn't really care. Needless to say she is a total BEEYOTCH. Steph- Was cool she seems a lot more self disciplined than the others. She was not swayed to cut school or stray from her goals. I liked that about her. Alex- As far as i am concerned his reasons for not dating Meg originally was a bunch of BS. I was not trying to hear it. Excuses Excuses. Hmph. Besides that he was a great friend to Meg and a good boyfriend to Amy. Ben- Came across as a jerkoff at first but eventually he redeems himself so good for him.
My Ratings Characters- Lovable and Witty Writing Style- Strong and Favorable Plot/Storyline- Solid, Fun, and Genuine Steam Factor- Medium/Moderately Steamy Overall- I Enjoyed it! Read it!!! Now go forth and read. The tell us about it on Goodreads!

Megan Miller is super excited to start her freshman year with her friends at Carver High School, but she’s even more excited to snag the guy of her dreams, Alex Aguilar. As she gears up for the new school year, Megan and her friends can’t help want to have a little fun. No one suspects this group of girls to be more than innocent because they all have good grades and they’re all enrolled into the honor classes. Megan thought freshman year of high school would be a breeze, but it’s nothing of the sort. When friendship and lovers collide, everything is at stake, including Megan’s relationship with Alex. High school is not what it’s cut out to be for Megan even if she is a Double Threat. Nonetheless, she’s enjoying the ride, going to parties and meeting new friends. If Megan plays her cards right, she may catch Alex’s eye this time, if someone else hasn’t already.
I was truly surprised with the outcome of So I’m A Double Threat. I didn’t expect to be consumed by such a story and I love what Julie Prestsater did. I do admit that at first I had trouble getting into the story because it’s been such a long time since I thought about high school. It’s not something I want to relive or go back to despite the good and the bad times alike. However, So I’m A Double Threat reminded me of those years in a good way. Once I got over my apprehensions, I was able to enjoy Meg’s story through and through.
Julie Prestater does such an amazing job of capturing the high school life. She really portrays the life of a high school teenager perfectly. The anticipation of the first day of school, excitement of meeting new people, the thrill of wanting a boy to like you, the popularity, the cliques, the friendships, the parties, the betrayals, the backstabbing, the heartbreak, the intrigue and gossips are all present in this story and make it oh so real. It really brought me back to those years of high school. It made me miss the freedom that Meg and her friends felt. It made me miss being young and being able to do what I want without so much responsibility and stress. It was slightly nostalgic, but really uplifting.
I really enjoyed getting to know Megan. I didn’t like her at first because I couldn’t really connect to her, but the more I read, the more I warmed and opened up to her. She was fun and quirky. She was smart and cool and she really made me laugh with her endless string of jokes and sarcasm and the spunk she always had even when she was down. She totally reminded me of what it was like to be her age. I loved that she cared about her grades and schoolwork, but still was able to balance having fun with her friends and going out to the different parties while being somewhat responsible. I love how she seemed perfect, but was still able to make mistakes. She was strong, but had this vulnerability that I loved. I especially loved the moments when Megan’s imagination ran away from her. When she got carried away with her day dreams, there was no denying how fun and real she was. I really liked reading how Megan grew up and mature during her freshman year in high school. I thought she really came into herself and with everything that happened to her, I thought she handled everything with such grace.
I absolutely loved Megan and Alex’s relationship. I could completely relate to Megan’s crush on Alex because I have been through that as well. I liked how Megan and Alex handled their situation with maturity. I loved how they kept being friends, but at the same time I was so frustrated because I just wanted them to be together already! They were so cute and perfect for each other. I thought that they really fit despite the age difference. I really fell for Alex. He’s such a sweetheart and I loved how he cared so much for Megan. He was so protective of her. He definitely became a best friend that Megan could always have. I can see why it was easy for Megan to talk to Alex about anything despite her intense feelings for him. They make a good match and there was no way I couldn’t help but root for the both of them.
All the secondary characters were cool too. I love how Megan had such a good relationship with all her friends. I loved their dynamic and how strong all of them seemed while still having that innocence about the world. They all made an awesome bunch and it was super fun to read their banter and interactions with one another. They made me smile more than once. I really felt like I was a part of their group too. I loved how Julie was able to make me have a love and hate relationship with Eric and Ben. I loved both of them equally, but some of their actions completely angered me. I was surprised at how affected I was with what was going on with these characters. I really came to love them all and I was sad to see it all come to an end when I finished the book.
I loved getting swept up in all the drama! It really felt like I was living and experiencing it all with Megan. I felt her happiness, her anger and her pain. Julie made So I’m a Double Threat completely relatable! She brings in real life problems in the story that deal with love, friendship, sex, alcohol and drug consumption that should definitely be addressed during a teenager’s time in high school. She weaves these aspects into the story with subtly that make the readers learn ways in which to handle such topics/situations when one is faced with such a thing. I liked how she added that into the story to give it much more depth.
Overall, So I’m A Double Threat was a quick and fun read. It brings back some memories from the past and will definitely having you wished to redo it all over again. You really get sucked into the story and journey of Megan’s first year in high school that by the end, you wished there was more!

*Thanks to Roxanne from Bewitching Book Tours and Julie for providing a review copy. In no way do they influence my opinion/review of this book. It is solely my own.
First off, I've got to say: I would never have read past the first chapter if this wasn't written by a friend of my husband. High school drama - including vernacular and behaviors - doesn't interest me. I hated high school, and have little desire to relive it.
That said, once I completed it, it took me awhile to decide if I even liked it. I had to completely set aside my own high school experience, and try to appreciate what she did here. Prestsater wrote a book, that I think, accurately portrays a plausible freshman year of high school. If you are interested in a teenager's modern tale...this will work for you. I love when author's can capture accurate conversations - and she did. While I never spoke as her characters did...I could hear them speaking in my head = this is a compliment. Her main-characters self-speak was maybe too close to out-speak though.
On the whole, I don't think this will be added to my re-reads list. But, as a once-read? I think that there is value in it.
Even more impressed am I by Julie Prestsater herself. I learned that she wasn't a reader herself until college. She also took a challenge, and flow-wrote this book in just a month! I think many people who read like the idea of writing their own novel...but, how many of us ever even start, much less finish? I'm in the never-even tried group...so, I suppose, my critique of her book really has no weight behind it! I should get out a pen!
Another compliment: it reminds me of Stephenie Meyer. Only in the high-school-setting + situation way (excluding fantastical creatures, of course). However...Megan is a much more likeable character that Bella. I cared about Megan...while I wished the Volturi would just take out Bella already.
Fun addition in Double Threat...Carver High School was modeled after the high school that I attended. It was fun to see references to things of my youth in print. I've walked that campus (well run it...7min passing truly was too little for an ex-college campus!). I've eaten at the Steel Grill (Iron Skillet). I've made fun of the cheerleaders. I've attended those rallies, skits, and assemblies. I've cheered for our pathetic football team. I've seen the school filled with orange and black. I've been in the amazingly beautiful auditorium. I recognize some of the teachers. The quad for lunch. So, thanks, for a bit of a walk through my memory.
Now I will be the big bad trash-talking reviewer, but I really don't know how this book got 4.04 for average rating.
REALLY. WHY PEOPLE GAVE THIS BOOK FIVE & FOUR STARS? WHY???
It was SO full of teenage clichés. ( SPOILER ALERT! ) So, the main character here is Megan. Megan is the typical high school popular (with mostly boys) girl: she has the looks, the brains, always "funny" (according to the boys in the book. I didn't find any humour in the things she does or says.) and not afraid to eat a big bunch of french fries.(Cliché #1) Alex is her love interest, the popular, but kinda not dumb jock. So, they hit it off, then comes Amy, the bestie-turned-back-stabber of Megan, and steals him. (Cliché #2)Then Megan tries to get together with the bestie of Alex (Cliché #3) who of course has a girlfriend, as it turns out on the night of the Homecoming prom (Cliché #4). Then it turns out that Kesshia (or something like this, I didn't bother with names.) does drugs with her new teammates and Megan doesn't know how to solve this (Cliché #5). And then I didn't continue. You can't blame me for this!
So, final count:
Stars: 1 Pages I didn't read: 140 or so (that's half of the book, in case you're wondering.) Amount of affection Megan shows towards people (mostly boys): NONE. FREAKIN' NONE. Cichés: TOO MANY.
I'm not sure why I didn't like So I'm a Double Threat. Possibly because it reminded me of the very worst parts of high school. Possibly because none of the characters were likable. Really. None of them. Not one person in this book is someone I would like to hang out with, especially not if I were in high school. Alex gets an "almost likable", but that's pretty much it. I feel like I must have missed something because this book got such great reviews on Goodreads, but I'm not going to reread to see what it was.
I won this book in a Goodreads First-reads giveaway.
As pathetic as it sounds, I loved how a main character named Megan got the lovable nickname Meggie. So adorable!
It also must be said that Julie Prestsater writes so incredibly transparently that oftentimes I was reminded of my own journal I kept on and off through high school. I really felt like I was in Megan's head, and I could just feel her emotions so viscerally while reading her story.
What I Didn't Like:
Quite frankly, the "transparent" writing that I referred to aboveseemed a little too much like a teenager's journal at the beginning of the book. It felt as though I was constantly in this teen's head, hearing her every thought about what was happening and the people there, but with no real clue as to the story. This wore off probably 15% into the book, and I really did enjoy the rest of it.
Also, in that first 15% or so (and a little bit later, but it stopped bugging me so much) I really was stuck trying to figure out whether I felt like the character is "in high school" or " only 14." I think this is the first time I really felt old as a person- because the oldster in me had some issues with some of the happenings in Megan's life- saying that a 14-year-old shouldn't be thinking/experiencing this or that. When I thought of her as a "highschooler," though, all such censoring tendencies went away. Suffice it to say, if you have a problem with stuff that real teens do deal with- drugs, alcohol, and sex, you'd probably want to skip this book. But I don't advise that course of action at all.
My Overall Review
As stated earlier in the review, I did have some issues with this book. At some point, however, it turned into a page turner that I couldn't put down. Seriously. I was going to go to sleep around 50% of the way through the book at 3am but I just had to read "a little bit more" and next thing I knew, I was on the last sentence and it was 5:40am. And before I went to sleep, I found myself emptying my Paypal account so I could secure book two in this series, Double Threat My Bleep... despite the fact that I won't be able to read that for a very long time.
I think in the end what makes this story so great is the honesty in which Megan tells her story. While the reader does spend a lot- and I do mean a lot- of the first part of the book in Megan's head, at some point Megan starts to see outside her own thoughts, and she then tells a story that is gripping and will keep your interest all the way to the end. I most certainly cannot wait to read the second book.
This book was provided for me at no charge, nor was I given compensation of any kind for this review. This review only reflects my personal opinion.
Okay, let me preface this review by saying that this book was written by a friend of mine and that no matter how it turned out I was prepared to give it a positive review and recommendation. Then the book arrived and I learned that the premise of the story is about a girl's high school experience of her freshman year. I'm a 35 year old guy who grew up as the oldest of 4 boys. I have 3 sons and 1 daughter. I read and hated the Twilight books and readily admit to having NO understanding of the female mind. I was honestly just hoping not to hate it.
Then I read it...
And I have to admit that I really enjoyed it. I absolutely love books that are heavy on characters and dialogue and this book hit a home run on that. And not just flowery prose but real conversation. I realize that style isn't for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed the "real" dialogue which served as the foundation for this story.
Another part for me that was personally entertaining was the ode to our high school years. I recognized so much of our Chaffey-isms in the story. From the early morning ditching to the Steel Grill (Iron Skillet) to the orange and black of the Carver Bengals (orange and black Chaffey Tigers). Not too mention trying to determine which teachers were based off of the ones we had.
Lastly, the breadth of teen issues the book tackles was both refreshing and frightening. Ditching classes, profanity, sexual themes, alcohol use, drug use and parental interaction...this book had it all. I have a daughter about 6 years away from being a freshman and I think I am hoping that she will be a cross between Meg and Steph...
Bottom line: Read this book and you'll enjoy it! And lest you all think I'm full of it and doing what I said I wouldn't...I'm already on Chapter 5 in the sequel "Double Threat My Bleep."
My Summary: Megan is starting her freshman year off with a bang. She smart, popular, and knows how to fun. When she and her friends get invited to a Senior party, she meets Alex. Meg thinks she's found the guy of her dreams. The problem is, Alex wants Meg's friend Amy.
As Meg's freshman years goes on, she learns the tough reality of what life is like when you get to high school. Friendships change, there is more pressure from boys, and peer pressure becomes more difficult to avoid. Does Meg learn how to balance it all and can she get Alex to see her as more than a friend?
My Take: I really flew through reading this book. What I liked the most about the story is that it deals with some very real high school situations. Meg had to learn that friendships change due to boys and other pressures like drugs. I think she had certain expectations on how things would be in high school and quickly learned that she couldn't determine the outcome.
Meg's character was easy to identify with. While the story does focus on the relationship she develops with Alex, it's really more about dealing with personal changes as you get older. Meg witnessed a friend doing drugs and another friend becoming sexually active. Those are both very real pressures in high school and I felt that Meg handled both situations maturely. She knew herself well enough to know she wasn't going to succumb to that pressure.
Overall, it was a pleasant read. As I said, I read it quickly and it held my attention. It's a great coming of age story for a YA reader. Adult readers would definitely identify as well. I'm interested to see how the series progresses. The series goes through each year of high school for Meg and the challenges she faces each year. I look forward to seeing how Meg and the gang manage their sophomore year!
What to say about this book?!?! I mean really, what can I say about a book that makes me smile months after reading it! I loved it, just completely loved it.
I had had my NOOK for only a few months when I started to get into reading YA books. Anyway I was scanning the books available when I came across So I'm a Double Threat. The subject seemed interesting enough and the price couldn't be beat so I got it. Well THANK GOODNESS I DID! This book was seriously awesome! It has everything a good YA book should have to keep a reader interested.
You start with a core group of girls that are best friends and starting their freshman year. They are nervous and excited and aware of the fact that things are going to change...and change they do. Instead of it being just them, boys get added to the mix and then everything is different. They all of a sudden find themselves having to navigate through not only the pressures of school but back stabbing, crushes, fights, uncertainties and Moms that are obsessed with NKOTB(not that I can blame them! :-)) and Ryan Seacrest. As time progresses they find their groove and their place, but things are forever different.
As there are many characters in this amazing story of growing up, Meg and Alex are my favorites. They start as uncertain acquaintances, morph into friends and then go from there. Watching all the shifts in their relationship was so fun and nerve wracking and left me wanting more and still does.
Julie Prestsater crafted such an amazing story that I instantly fell in love and makes me want more. And honestly sometimes makes we wish I was back in high school. I said sometimes. ;-)
A definite must read! Do it! You won't be disappointed!
So I thought this book was just alright. I was enjoying it well enough until about halfway through it started turning into an after school special for kids. First up drugs - Oh noes! The one girl smoked some pot!! Well obviously she is one step away from being strung out on the streets! What should the girls do? Well let's all discuss how bad drugs are and what we should do if we learn a friend is doing drugs. And just say no! Okay thank you...you could have had this come across as way less after school special like. I mean it was totally unrealistic how the character reacted and the conversations they had just came across as let's teach kids it is wrong to do drugs, not let's have this be part of the story and have the other friends not agree and try to help their friend. Then after that we have the whole sex issue and how everyone and their sister is getting pregnant and I just....I read a lot of young adult books. Some of them have things about these topics in them, but they are not preachy and like a school textbook. That is why this was just an okay book. That and the end was super lame - why would I get with the guy who has been making out with my "best friend" all year? Maybe it is just me I just wanted the main character to stand up for herself and not get with him...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book starts out as a typical coming of age story. The real difference is that main character manages to do this without becoming suicidal, being turned into a vampire, shifter, or other paranormal creature. It seems that most of the coming of age stories I have read lately end up being about paranormal stuff. This book is not that. This is the real deal, a real teen with real issues. There is however, the requisite love triangle, or more of a three dimensional hexagon.
I quickly came to care for Megan as she came across as a real person, warts and all. She was loveable, but still had her foibles. Megan had her own issues. She is self-conscious but strong-willed. I felt like this was a person I could have been friends with when I was that age. I sympathized with her and connected with her which pulled me into the book.
The writing flows easily making this an easy. The writing was clean and easy to read.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Ok, so I downloaded this book because it looked like a quick, easy, junk-food for the brain kind of read. I’m far from a teenager, but I still enjoy some good YA drama. I didn’t care for the title and really didn’t think I would care for the book, but I wound up loving it. Or I think it might be more accurate to say that I became so involved with the many unique characters that I fell in love with them. Even though this book stands on its own and it’s not necessary to read the others in the series, I really wanted to know what became of each of them. I don’t spend money on books very often (I’m too much of a tight wad and there are too many books I can read for free.), but I purchased every book in this series and loved them all. The writer really makes you feel like you are part of their group of friends. I cried with them; I laughed out loud with them (many, many times); I fell in love with each and every one of them.
I do need to say that I would not consider this a teen read. There is a lot of partying and alcohol use at a very young age. The sexual content and bad language is limited, but is still prevalent.
I absolutely adored this story! It came highly recommended to me from a good friend and she has never led me astray when it comes to recommending books and her track record is still intact!
While this story is about a group of freshman girls and how they adapt not only to high school, but to boys, both being friends with boys & crushing on them, it also deals with the pitfalls that all teens deal with as they grow older, drugs, sex, relationships and making good decisions. It's light-hearted, fun and it has characters that you want to cheer for and you empathize with at times as well.
Julie Prestater did a fantastic job with this story and I would recommend this to anyone that wants a great story that will leave you clamoring to read the follow up "Double Threat My Bleep."
Picked up this book on my kindle app for free. In hindsight, would've paid full price! This is a well-written story that grabs you at the first party. I love the friendship of the four girls and watching it change as they meet boys and discover more abut themselves in high school. Sure, there are unrealistic parts, but if you're looking for realism, go grab a non-fiction book. I read this straight through, start to finish in one day, then went and bought the 2nd and 3rd books in the series, then picked up the one about the teachers! I wouldn't let my daughter read this until at least her sophomore year, not one to give my kids any ideas they don't already have. Great love story, great writing, great characters...can't lose! Read it, you won't be sorry.
I am very happy with how this book ended. I was going to be mad if they all forgived Amy again. What an awful friend. Who cares if Alex did not want to date Megan or not she liked him all summer and Amy should have said no thanks. Then she starts having sex with Eric when Megan is dating him. NO way!!!!! I love Jon he seems so sweet. Ben was a jerk. Not sure I really like Alex yet. How he can like another girl and talk to her more then his supposed girlfriend is kinda sleazy.
This book was cute, and brought back so many of my own memories.
In this book, a young girl falls in love with an older boy. The only issue is, at their age, age does matter. However, it doesn't keep them from being best friends.
This book takes you on a journey of teen love, hate, drinking, laughter and crying. I thought I would read this book to pass time, and I couldn't stop! I love how Prestsater kept my interest the entire time. And the plot, WOW, amazing!
i really think this is goning to be a great book. One of the reasons i think it's going to be a amazing Book os because shes the GREATEST Teacher That ever Lived<33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333
I really enjoyed this read! The author does a good job utilizing humor to illustrate the day-to-day reality of a teenager. As I was reading it I couldn't help but laugh and remember what it was like back in high school. The storyline and it's characters grabbed my attention and I had to read it to the end. I can't wait for a sequel. I just gotta know what happens to Meg and her friends!!!
Oh boy, the chemistry between Megan and Alex was sizzling, I just wished they would have gotten together sooner. And don't even get me started on Amy and Eric, I have a serious bone to pick with them grrr... Can't wait until the next one! (Megan and Alex are right for each other darn it).
I actually found this book on my kindle for free, and I thought, you know, why not read it? After I read it, I was blown away! I can't wait until I get my claws on the second, third and fourth book!
It's an excellent book for teens to read; it's about teens and their search for identity, and the beginnings for how life works.
I LOVED this book. This book followed the life of Megan a freshman in high school, who plans to make waves. There is plenty of betrayl, love and break-ups. This book show how high school life really is. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a light read that anyone would enjoy.
It soooooooooooooooooo good. i feel kinda sorry for her friend though, but first of all she knew Megan loved Alex so even if he was into her she should have said no. but i rate her for stepping up For friend when she was doing drugs
OMG, this book was great! I loved it... and Alex, WOW that guy is all girls dream boy, at least for me! XD and then Amy and Eric, UUUGGGGHHH! wanna kill bboth of them!
I liked the girls :D exciting book, looking forward to the next book! I am already hooked up! :)
I enjoyed this series. It was cute and reminded me of high school. Oh to be able to go back and do it all again. So many things. Drugs, sex, love, lust, homework... Can we get do-overs?
Anywho.. this was a great YA read. Something I will save for re-reading later.
I love when a book makes you feel like you are watching it happen in person!! It brought back so many memories for me as well! It was so funny that I couldn't help laughing out loud! It was a great read
I loved this book. I loved the story line and the way the characters were developed. I had to keep reading to find out what happened with these students. She totally got the high school experience nailed down.
Wow. This is true-to-life high school. I really enjoyed this book. Please, please tell me there will be a spin-off for Alex and Meg. I would love to read about "someday" happening.
UPDATE: So I discovered it's a series...yay. Getting ready to start on book 2, DOUBLE THREAT MY BLEEP.
I really like this book. Reminded me so much of me when I was in hs except I was good at soccer and all the boys liked me as a friend. but all the feelings Meg went through about boys and her friends I did too.
