This book is a compilation of classic short stories by the world`s greatest writers. The stories have been carefully chosen th shocase the authors` versatility and skill as storytellers. The collection covers an extraordinary range of themes, styles and settings, allowing the reader to get a glimpse of another world gone by. Yet, these stories seem timeless, and the characters in them show the same foibles, fears and hopes as people in the brave new world of the 21st century.
Russian writer Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov (Russian: Алексей Максимович Пешков) supported the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 and helped to develop socialist realism as the officially accepted literary aesthetic; his works include The Life of Klim Samgin (1927-1936), an unfinished cycle of novels.
This Soviet author founded the socialist realism literary method and a political activist. People also nominated him five times for the Nobel Prize in literature. From 1906 to 1913 and from 1921 to 1929, he lived abroad, mostly in Capri, Italy; after his return to the Soviet Union, he accepted the cultural policies of the time.
It is an anthology of already acclaimed short stories. But, many brilliant writers are not there in it. Like Italo Calvino. Black sheep should've been there in this. It isn't there.
An eclectic collection of some brilliant stories by some of the best writers of all times ..The stories span different cultures and times..Each story by itself is beautiful and makes one want to read it over and over again ...An incredible collection indeed !!
my love for short stories developed way back to my yester years of primary classes when a temporary english teacher wove a magical world of stories...since then its been part of my adult wanderlust. i was familiar with the works of Anton Chekhov, Tagore, saki etc..and who can forget the Hans Andersen...so it was no surprise that after ten years, i am still enthralled by their 'magic'.in addition, i am introduced to other writers of equal caliber in creating the magic...tsk tsk..i cant remember their names!!!!! through this book i made my journey to the suburbs of England accompanying a boy to his real life encounters with dead writers and poets, felt the anguish of a woman who loses an necklace and slaves to repay back. then i was also cheering for a Russian farmer to mark as much land as he can and was part of the abuses by the makers of crackles.i became the father who murders his own son for he is not worth of a man and felt the spiritual uplifting of a buddhist turned woman. i took part in a duel which happened again after ten years and felt that first crush of a solider in a kiss..does being on honeymoon means falling in love all over again, that too on deeper level...finally what can i say about the little mermaid??? she is an embodiment of goodness representing the mysteries in the sea.... wait...there's still more....
