‘Scent’ is told in the first-person perspective of Bianca ‘B’ Wisetail. B is called the Last Circulator with no other Circulators born after her. She is the cherished only child of Jessica and Hunter Wisetail; a mother who is a Circulator and a father who is a Lokoti Werewolf. However on the night of a full moon before her 18th Birthday, a new surprising feature arises inside of B that throws the Lokoti Tribe’s long history of the ‘Lokoti Werewolf’ upside down.

The world outside is recuperating after World War Three with the Lokoti Werewolves protecting the borders of the Lokoti National Park in Alaska against marauders. Inside the tribe, the families are closed-knit where everyone knows everyone. One of these families are the Sabre family who are the only non-Lokoti invited to live on tribal lands. As B is best friends with Derik who is the same age as she, it’s a different story with Derik’s older brother Declan.

Declan is a European Werewolf and an honorary member of the male dominated Lokoti Werewolf pack. He and B grow up fighting each other just as Declan fights for the tribe’s safety as he patrols the borders with the other Werewolves. Declan’s sarcastic comments and his biting one-liners are constantly aimed B’s way. However after B’s change, their fiery exchange turns into something else… a forbidden love. Declan knows because of his breed of Werewolf that his secret affection for the tribe’s Last Circulator and first female Lokoti Werewolf would be frowned upon.

European Werewolves are classified the most dangerous breed of Werewolf in the world. Although Declan was trained the Lokoti Werewolf way to curb his deadly hunger, prejudice still arises. Instead of Declan placing B on a pedestal? With his European Werewolf personality he pounced instead. European Werewolves just love a good fight, which was exactly what Declan got when he secretly chased the tribe’s only female Werewolf.

From the mistrust towards his breed, Declan is forced to silently watch B’s arranged marriage to another member of the pack. Although her husband is a good man, B comes to miss the chemistry she shared with her supposed worst enemy. Navigating their rocky romance, B and Declan also have to contend with human looters carrying shotguns loaded with silver bullets, the odd European Vampire, other European Werewolves who are still man-eaters and even a sensitive issue that human couples may face; a barren marriage. With such an obstacle course that could make a new driver hug a traffic cone for comfort; B and Declan find not only passion but absolution in their bloodlust-fueled desires.

The adventures of the deliriously happy but slightly insane…but even insanity appreciates company. K.R. Smith aka onaya3 is a self-confessed writerholic, but rather than seeking help for her addictions, instead she indulges her obsessive compulsive disorder. The remotes must sit in order on the coffee table, as must her DVD collection which includes Star Trek, X-Files, Supernatural as well as British comedy. However her passions which come out as popular subjects in her sci-fi, supernatural, romance series are traveling (the world and through time), hauntings, werewolves, vampires, voodoo, ESP and always looking on the bright side of life (and death).

Today's review is on Scent by K.R. Smith

There have not been many books that have affected me as much as Scent has. I found myself filled with happiness at some points as well as horrible sadness to the point of bringing me to sopping tears at others. Perhaps it is because of the culture in which I myself live in here on the island of Kauai, where everyone is considered family and anyone older than you is called Auntie or Uncle, that the story of Bianca Wisetail and the Lokoti tribe touched me so. Whatever it was, I fell more in love with this book the more I read it.

Bianca Wisetail is the last Circulator to be born as well as the first female Lokoti Werewolf. Though being the last Circulator doesn't come with many downfalls, being the only female Werewolf does.

Declan Saber is the only European Werewolf among the Lokoti. He and his family were welcomed to the Lokoti tribe when he was bitten and his father was attacked and killed by a European Werewolf. As well as being the brother of Bianca's best friend, he is in love with her.

Though the Elders mean well, they arrange for Bianca to marry one of the two available Were's among the pack. One is Declan and the other is Grant. Without knowing that Bianca and Declan have feelings for each other and that they have already been together sexually, the Elders pick Grant even though he is ten years older than Bianca. During the six years of marriage Declan retains his love for her as well as the pain he carries seeing her with another man.

Ultimately Bianca and Declan do get to be together though not due to happy events, and when they do, they face some negativity. After all, now Bianca is the first Lokoti Werewolf to take on a second mate.

During her marriage to Declan, Bianca and her family go through an extensive amount loss as those around them age and pass on. Friends and relatives alike leaving just two among the main characters in the end. And though they are now surrounded by the descendant's of those family and friends, I found myself deeply saddened.

There is action and suspense in Scent as well as a timeless love story. It is however a very long book; 716 pages, and though it has a "science fiction" element, I didn't really find it necessary. Also, I think that perhaps the marriage between Bianca and Grant was a bit to long. Six years is a terribly long time for Declan to have to wait. Perhaps Grant could have gotten out of the picture a bit sooner. Lastly, I feel that there was just to much death towards the end. To have lost so many of the supporting characters was just to much for me. I mean how much can one person take? Even if that person is supernatural.

All in all, I do really love this book. I love the closeness of the tribe and the amount of love that is evident between the characters. In fact, during and even now after I have read Scent, I have been questioning my own relationships with my family. It is those books that ultimately make us question our own lives that are the really good ones. Because Scent has made me do just that, it must be good. I look forward to more books from Smith with open arms. (Just cut back on the Circulator stuff.)

I was a little sceptical when I read the description but I decided to give it a go due to my love of a previous free eBook (Claimed) by this great writer and I wasn't disappointed in the least, so glad I read this. Bianca has big dreams, seeing beyond the tribe upbringing, wanting to go to go away and study at University, talking about it with her friend Derik who happens to be the brother of Declan. Unfortunately for Bianca her plans go to the way side when she changes into a werewolf, the first female Lokoti werewolf to be exact and is forced to take a mate. Delcan started off like such an ass and a jerk! There were moments when I just wanted to punch him in the face! Like when he was first with Bianca;

“It’s not like I have a lot of options, with you being the only girl around that I can do this to, without accidently killing her or worse, turning her”

Then he grew into this amazing guy and Bianca and he were so perfect together. When everything with Grant happened I was thinking hell no! This can't be happening! There is so much action in this mixed with some steamy scenes to create the perfect balance. A fantastic read.

I’ve been sitting here watching the cursor blink for far too long trying to come up with a way to summarize this book. I don’t think I can do it without simply repeating what others have already said. So I shall do what I do best and give my loud mouth opinion. When I started this book I had read Circulate the 1st book in this series and was concerned that the books that are outlined to fall between Scent and Circulate were not available, yet. As it turned out, there was no reason for my worry. The author does a good job of keeping the reader from being confused. I still would like to read the stories that are outlined to fall between; but I can see now that it will not be a problem to read them out of sequence. This story takes place over a great deal of time; supernatural beings with extraordinarily long lifespans contribute to the length of the book. The struggles, of B and Declan coping with the life as the supernatural beings, pulled me into the story. I wanted to read every little juicy bit. There are moments of sadness that broke my heart and moments of love that made my heart swell with gladness. Often when I read these sorts of books I get caught up in the romantic love, but this book has so much more love- love of family, and community held my attention as well. It was just as easy to become attached to the other characters as well as B and Declan. If you read Claimed and are wondering if you should buy Scent I would say it is well worth price.

This book is 2,000 pages long. Yes, that is a 2 with three zeros. No joke. It is also the stupidest, most confusing, poorly written book I have ever read in my life. We have two different kinds of werewolves going on, calculators, light people, circulators, and more. It is extremely difficult to follow this story line because it goes back and forth repeatedly in time several thousands of years. It is also difficult to follow because you have way too many different kinds of paranormal people that you have to keep track of and what they encompass. It was a horrible book. I wish I could get my money back. The author could have written this in about 300 pages and lopped off about 1,700 boring pages. Reading is supposed to be enjoyable not leave you scratching your head going, "Who is on 1st?" When you have to keep going back a few pages to figure out what just happened because the story line is just too confusing or hard to follow, it's not worth reading. This is honestly the worst book I have ever read. Everybody dies. There is one funeral after another. I lost track of how many funerals they attended. Very depressing. And dear God, does anybody in this family know how to cook anything BESIDES roast and grandma's special gravy? And get yourself a proofreader. Your sentences are choppy and don't make sense. Furthermore, it's "drawer" not "draw" that you place your clothes in. This mistake must be in this book 20 times.

I loved this book. It was the the first paranormal romance that ever made me want to go on and purchase the next one.
I loved the characters and was completely sucked into their world. It all seemed so believable. Bravo to the author for creating such a "real" world.
