Loose Ends

Rate this book
Praised for its "cutting-edge dialogue, intriguing characters, and a spicy storyline," Electa Rome Parks's, The Ties That Bind introduced a savagely honest look at modern romance. Now, in a back-to-back publishing event, Parks returns with her next novel of love and friendship and the betrayals of both-some forgiven, some never forgotten.
It's been five years since they trusted one another-and betrayed one another - only as friends and lovers could. Beautiful Mia, getting a second chance at love. Christian, who gave up his player card for the one woman he's not sure he can trust. And Brice, as irresistibly bad as ever.
One woman can tame him - if he'd give her the chance: Kree, innocent but underestimated, and looking for the kind of passion that can change a life. When she finds it, it's going to come with a price. Sometimes, it doesn't take a lot to tear apart friends like these. All it takes is love.

This is the sequel to The Ties That Bind where I was first introduced to Christian, Brice, and Mia. Christian and Brice are best friends and Brice and Mia on the surface appeared to be happily married. But Brice had a temper which he sometimes couldn’t control and Mia got the brunt of it. When Brice beat her for the very last time, and she ended up in the hospital, it was there she finally mustered up enough courage to divorce him.

In Loose Ends, Mia has moved on with her life which included finishing college and she and Christian are now married with a beautiful daughter. Everything seemed to be going nicely until Brice reached out wanting to make amends to both of them. Brice wanted his homeboy back and he wanted to see Mia again. Mia was against them meeting Brice and his new wife, Kree because while she wanted to move past the hurt, she was still drawn to Brice.

Let’s just say it wasn’t smooth sailing as Brice has reared his ugly ways again by beating on his second wife. And if that wasn’t enough, he still lusted after Mia who finally caved into his whims. The end result…broken trust, broken marriages and a yearning by Mia to get Christian back.

I thoroughly enjoyed this roller coaster of a novel that dealt with love, lust, and lies. The characters were well developed, the drama was real, and the dialogue was spot on. However, I felt that Brice’s death could have been explored in a little more depth. However, the emails he left Christian, Mia, and Kree before his death did speak to his state of mind, but I wanted more.

Overall, this is a very good read!

Some of my favorite lines:

“Your woman just walked in. Yeah, she found us okay. You wanna speak with her? Okay. Hold on.”
Brice handed me the phone; reclined in his rolling chair and scrutinized me slowly while I talked to my husband. I could feel him taking in my body inch by inch, but this time it didn’t make me feel nervous. This time it made me feel sensual and sexy as I ran my fingers through my short hair. In my jeans, midriff T-shirt and tennis shoes, I felt sexy-cool.

Welcome back to Mia's and Christian's life five years after she kicked Brice out of it.

I admit that the author did well with Mia's growth and how her life turned out after she kicked her abusive first to the curb. I was a little disappointed that there was't anything in-depth about Mia in therapy and that the military did nothing about Brice. From experience, the military frowns on abusive relationships and I know many who have lost their careers over it - particularly over documented physical abuse (via hospitals who have to report it) of spouse and children.

Christian loses some points in my eyes for allowing Brice back into their lives - but the writer makes that betrayal consistent with the personalities of both men (bros before hos even if you marry them). And being in their heads is both enlightening and disheartening. I think by the end of it, I would have been happier to see Kree and Mia fall in love and ride off into the sunset together.

In the long run, it was brief, brutal and only suffered a few snags in the plot but was otherwise - it was a satisfying wrap up (I'm bloodthirsty - I felt no remorse over Brices' fate)

I actually really liked how the book ended the first one left me hanging ties that bind but i didn’t even know that there was even a 2nd book until i was looking up what was her 2nd book she wrote

I felt some stuff was predictable but it still made you want to read more because you wanted to see how the story would develop and play out

There’s a possibility for a 3rd book but i think that would drag the story out

I read it in a day just like i had the first and really couldn’t put it down

It’s a good read and definitely read ties that bind first so you know the story ahead of time

Brice

This is my second or third time reading this book. Mia has no self control and Brice was all to controlling. I’m glad everyone made it out ok... well except Brice

Pieces that complete the puzzle

I believe that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

The Pope's are madly in love, and delighted to finally be united as ONE. Residents of Hotlanta, Christian and Mia are married with their adorable contribution of love, Lyric.

Things couldn't be going better in their lives. Granted Christian did give up the most, he lost his adopted family, The Matthew's and his brotherfriend Brice. Ya'll remember Brice right? He was Christian's best friend; and Mia's ex-husband.

As luck would have it, Brice is looking to re-establish the friendship/relationship that they all once relished in.

After all it's been five long years. Brice was a different man, with his "own" views of relationships and marriage. He's remorseful on the way things ended between him, Christian, and Mia. Brice is blissfully married, to a young woman that knows her role as his wife. Kree loves her husband, and understands, and more importantly respects the boundaries of their love.

Can these long lost friends recover from the haunting past that they share, or will love and desire cause these families, couples, and friends to spiral out of control with too many Loose Ends?

I have to admit, I was very skeptical about reading the continuance of The Ties that Bind. Though it was a strong read, it still lacked substance. HOWEVER, Loose Ends seem to rouse some of the missing oomph with the sweetest taboo.

Loose Ends is a good read from start to finish. You turn each page with intensity, trying to determine where the author is going. I read this book on the train. I took the local just so I wouldn't have to put it down quickly. The characters and plotlines can be understood without reading the sequel The Ties That Bind but I highly recommend reading the The Ties That Bind first so that you get a full picture of who these folks are. Mia is not the same in both books; you'll need to see how she evolved and to understand her connection to Brice. How can you love a man who abused you; whom you haven't laid eyes on in 5 years! You gotta read it to understand even if you don't believe it should be so. Read these books before the movie comes out or you're going to kick yourself.

Again loved these characters in their own way and also wanted to lay hands on them at one point, even my beloved Christian needed a shake here and there lol. Very good read, relatable, believable and engaging. It definitely pulled me in from the start. I enjoy Ms. Parks writing style so this won't be the last I read from her. This story was bittersweet for sure.

I read her books just to see how she got on. Like it was nothing special about this or the others. Can't remember which ones I tossed across the room, but her books made me toss them. #AngryReader
