Kane & Able was one of the best books I ever read when it was first published. It is about two men, The Ameican Kane, son of a rich man, and an immigrant who takes the surname Able in his new homeland, the USA. Their lives intermingle and they become bitter enemies. I've reread it often, still a great read. The Prodigal Daughter was publised years later, first half of the book is basically Kane & Able again. Not a Penny More, is a completly different book and is excellent read, a great book for a winters night. Well worth reading.
Harvey Metcalfe, a Polish immigrant, works his way to becoming wealthy through a series of shady deals. This time he conned the wrong men. Victims of buying stock in a nonexistent company, four unlikely conspirators come together for revenge. They consist of: a professor at Oxford, a society doctor, an art gallery owner, and a British aristocrat. Each must come up with a separate plan which the four men will execute together. Full of twists and turns and the unexpected. One of Jeffrey Archer's first books.
The beginning was so promising, but I found the end extremely disappointing. The author gave in to overwrought cliches and abandoned his inpiring characters in favor of bitter, crazied old men.
What can I say, as trashy as it can seem I don't seem to be able to put Kane and Able down. I go from deep philosophical treatise to the joys and ease of Archer. Kane and Able is always my fav. I've probalby read it 5 times and I'll probably read it 5 more. If you want a book to keep you going, keep you away from thinking and just relax into a good twiting tale then get into it. I had a mate in college who basically hadn't read a book and yet he got through this (happily) despite its length. So yep highly recommend.
Some of the sex was too graphic, which I did not enjoy. The story was good but the resolution made me sad that one man could be so angry. Not my favorite.
It was my first book in school and I loved it then. May be that is why I rated 5 stars but it is still a very good book with a fine description of two parallel characters.
Read more than once and always a favorite as is the author, Jeffrey Archer. A must read and always human condition and psych-contemporary regardless of when written.
