Collections of American poet John Robinson Jeffers, who sets many of his works in California, include Tamar and Other Poems (1924).
He knew the central coast and wrote mostly in classic narrative and epic form. Nevertheless, people today know also his short verse and consider him an symbol of the environmental movement.
Stanford University Press recently released a five-volume collection of the complete works of Robinson Jeffers. In an article titled, "A Black Sheep Joins the Fold", written upon the release of the collection in 2001, Stanford Magazine ably remarked that due to a number of circumstances, "there was never an authoritative, scholarly edition of California’s premier bard" until Stanford published the complete works.

In a rare recording, Jeffers can be heard reading his "The Day Is A Poem" (September 19, 1939) on Poetry Speaks – Hear Great Poets Read Their Work from Tennyson to Plath, Narrated by Charles Osgood (Sourcebooks, Inc., c2001), Disc 1, #41; including text, with Robert Hass on Robinson Jeffers, pp. 88–95. Jeffers was also on the cover of Time – The Weekly Magazine, April 4, 1932 (pictured on p. 90. Poetry Speaks).
"Jeffers Studies", a journal of research on the poetry of Robinson Jeffers and related topics, is published semi-annually by the Robinson Jeffers Association.
“Civilization is a transient sickness,” Jeffers writes in one poem in this volume. It’s a theme that he returns to again and again. The earth is very old, man’s time here, not only as individuals but also as cultures and even a species, is short. Jeffers captures the timeless beauty of California’s wild coastline, and he imbues it with otherworldly majesty. These are starkly beautiful poems with harshly realist things to say about human nature and man’s place in nature.
Robinson Jeffers was born on January 10, 1887. One of his most famous poems and one of my favorites is "Rock and Hawk" and it was used as the title for a selection of his shorter poems edited by the poet Robert Haas in 1987. The collection spans Jeffers' output of poems from the twenties through the sixties. The themes that spurred his seeking mind include nature as in these lines from "Natural Music": "The old voice of the ocean, the bird-chatter of little rivers, (Winter has given them gold for silver To stain their water and bladed green for brown to line their banks) But he also was influenced by his reading of Nietzsche as evidenced by these thoughts in "Roan Stallion": "Humanity is the start of the race: I say Humanity is the mold to break away from, the crust to break through, the coal to break into fire, The atom to be split." The Jeffers that I like the most has a transcendental quality that reminds one of Thoreau or Emerson, but imbues nature with a modern patina that make its spiritual quality seem new. Many of the poems also suggest the beauty, the solitude, and the grandeur of the home Jeffers made in Carmel. While his musings can sometimes be dark and brooding they also reflect the mind of a truly great American poet.
A nice entry point for a sometimes difficult poet, whose more lengthy narrative verse can be a bit daunting. The poems are well chosen and represent a good sample of Jeffers' long career. The editor's introduction is good too, throwing much light on Jeffers' life and career as a writer. Especially recommended for those who want a deeper understanding of the central California coast. Overall, very good stuff.
