While out exercising her sprint dog team Zoya witnesses a murder. Not only does she see the man being shot, but then the murderer turns and shoots at her as well. From that moment on Zoya's life is changed. She is plunged into an abyss of shaken faith that she doesn't know if she can ever climb out of.

Anesia is Zoya's mother. She owns a thriving business of raising prize sprint dog teams. Anesia and Zoya have always been close. They have always been able to share everything with each other. After all it is just the two of them. Zoya's father died before she was ever born. Anesia has had to be strong to face the stigma of never having been married to Zoya's father. Anesia would do anything to protect her daughter, but is at a loss as to how to help her out of the abyss that Zoya has plunged into.

Sean has trekked across the country trying to escape from his father's tyrannical rule over his life. When he arrives in North Pole, Alaska he senses it is time to stop traveling and settle down. He applies for a job in Anesia's kennels. Anesia hires him to care for the kennels, but also to protect her and Zoya from the men that are still out to kill her.

Zoya has allowed her anger at God to fester in her soul. A question that she asks Sean at one point is, "Why does God allow the bad junk to happen?" She no longer feels that God is there with her. She resents that He allowed her to see the murder. She resents that He has allowed the killers to still be out there threatening her. She pulls away from her family and her best friend Andie. She doesn't want them to know how much she is struggling with her anger towards God. She feels that they would never understand. The only voice she seems to hear is the one telling her never to trust Him again.

Race Against Time is the sequel to the book No Safe Haven by the mother/daughter authors Kimberley and Kayla Woodhouse. Race Against Time starts out heart pounding and ends just as strong! I was on the edge of my seat several times. I have to admit too that I had to put the book down a couple of times because the action was so intense I had to get up and walk around before I continued! The action wasn't the only thing that held my interest though. Zoya's struggle with her anger towards God was heart-breaking. The relationship growing between Sean and Anesia was special. I loved that the characters from No Safe Haven (Jenna, Andie and Cole) were also part of Race Against Time. And I'm hoping that Kimberley and Kayla are working on a 3rd book to the series because I think there is still lots more of the story to be told!

I don't even have the words to say how amazed I am that this book was written by a thirteen year old with her mother. The amount of maturity and spiritual wisdom that was required to make Zoya who she was was nothing short of phenomenal to come from such a young author. Her character really goes through the ringer physically, emotionally, and spiritually in a way that takes the reader on one vivid and intense ride.

I admire the amount of faith content that was able to be seamlessly woven into this story in a way that came off as genuine without being preachy or cheesy. I appreciated that the authors weren't afraid to have Zoya's character wrestle with some deep struggles in her faith without the other characters jumping down her throat with a "Bible thumping" answer. It wasn't a "you just need to do this" or "you just need to pray that" or even the dreaded "maybe you should re-evaluate your faith." Instead of being made to feel that her struggles were invalid, she was encouraged to share her heart and what she was wrestling with. The Bible wasn't thrown at her but Jesus was offered in love. I can't even say how much I loved how this was all played out.

With a whole heap of action and moving character Arcs, this was a book not easily put down. I recommend reading No Safe Haven first because it will help you understand some of the back story behind the action in this one. I know this is a series that will stay with me for a long time and I'm glad I took the time to read it. If you haven't read it yet I highly recommend you change that!

I'm pretty dissapointed with this book. I'm willing to admit I had very high expectations after reading the previous book in this series and was very sad there are only two books (in this series and written by this mother-daughter-duo). There are three main characters and a handfull of other more or less important once including the main characters from the first book in series. From the very beginning I didn't like Zoya the young MC, wasn't sure about Anesia, her mother but liked Sean the male MC very much. I'm not sure if it was because I couldn't relate to them and their inner struggles of if it's like with real life poeole - there are some you like and other you don't.
The suspense part of the plot was well made and grabbed my interest enough I struggled through the entire book and was the only part I liked in this book - I don't regard the location and the main characters from the previous book as part of this story only and still liked those elements. The Christian message was partially great but didn't reach me in a way I wished and expected.
I'm glad I read No Safe Haven first that way even if I'm dissapointed I read both book - other way round I'm not sure I'd ever read the second one.

Anesia is a breeder for champion sprint race dogs. While Zoya was out exercisers them one day, murder happened in front of her. Then they came after her, her struggles within herself and her faith is well shown in this book. There was some love interest, and others characters, Well written, intense, and giving us more about raising dogs for racing.

Title: RACE AGAINST T IME
Authors: Kimberley and Kayla R. Woodhouse
Publisher: Broadman & Holman
November 2011
ISBN: 978-14336-7117-3
Genre: Inspirational/suspense

Zoya Naltsiine is thirteen years old. While out running the dogs that her mother breeds and sells in the kennels, she witnesses a murder. The killers see her and make an attempt on her life, but she gets away with only a flesh wound.

Anesia is desperate to protect her daughter from these unknown killers, but doesn’t know where to turn or who to trust. When someone breaks into her house while Zoya is still in the hospital and leave a threatening note. She needs full time help at the kennel, but now, foremost in her mind is the attempted murder of her daughter…would any of the men she interviews be the murderer come to finish the job?

Sean Connelly is fleeing his own demons. He’s in awe of Alaska and is offered the job at the kennels after the police detective assures Anesia he’s clean. But then Sean discovers macro-chips bearing secrets implanted in the Naltsiine Kennel’s dogs.

Could the macro-chips be related to the murder? Could strange accidents be more attempts to ‘silence’ Zoya? And what is Zoya disobeys the stiff rules her mother puts in place to attempt to keep her daughter safe?

RACE AGAINST TIME is the sequel to No Safe Haven. I love the Alaskan setting and that the book starts in the middle of the action and the suspense is able to grip you from page one and doesn’t let go. I would recommend reading No Safe Haven before reading this book, as the characters in that book are major secondary characters in this book, and the mystery in book one is referred to several times at the beginning, so readers will want to be up-to-speed with what happened.

I enjoyed getting to know Zoya, Anesia, and Sean. Sean was an especially interesting character. The typical hero, good, kind, considerate, and polite. Anesia and Zoya were both very strong heroines, both determined that things would be done their way—“You do it my way, no highway option.” If you are looking for a good suspense novel to read, then RACE AGAINST TIME is one to consider. It involves murder, suspense, action, and dog sled racing, and is set in Alaska. A wonderful combination. $14.99. 352 pages.

Thirteen year old Zoya Naltsiine is out with her sprint racing dogs when she witnesses a murder. While trying to get away, she gets shot. She's left feeling angry at God for all the bad things that have happend to her, her friends and family.

Zoya's mom, Anesia, is a single mom who runs a kennel with champion sprint racing dogs. Anesia is tired of being alone, especially seeing Jenna and Cole's new marriage. She's trying to hold everything together, so she hires Sean Connelly to help out around the kennel.

Sean Connelly has (literally) walked away from his high profile job at CROM to get away from his tyrannical father. He sells everything and walks more than 6,000 miles to North Pole, Alaska, looking to start over. He applies at Anesia's kennel, and gets the job.

Zoya is angry at everyone, (especially God) and killers are after her.
Anesia is trying to do what's best for her, Zoya, and the dogs, as well as trying to figure out Sean, his secrets, and the feelings she has for him.
And Sean is determined to keep the girls safe and figure out why macrochips are being implanted in the dogs.

Are the macrochips related to the murder? Why are the killers still after Zoya? Will Zoya ever put her anger aside and trust God again? And Anesia, will she ever find love again?

Race Against Time is the sequel to No Safe Haven (Which you will want to read before Race Against Time) Written by the mother-daughter team Kimberly and Kayla Woodhouse, Race Against Time alternates points of view between multiple characters. (Mainly Zoya, Anesia, and Sean. As well as Andie, Cole, Jenna, and a couple other characters.)
I liked that the book alternated between characters, but I wish it hadn't been as many as there were; it got to be too many.
The book is set in North Pole, Alaska, (Somewhere I’ve been before. So that made it a little more interesting for me!)
The descriptions of Alaska, the terrain, and sled dog racing were fun, accurate, and interesting to read about.

A fun, light read with a great mix of action, adventure, romance, sled dog racing, faith and Alaska. A great book anyone of any age would enjoy.

Okay, this is so weird...but I honestly can't say that I enjoyed this next adventure in Alaska by the Woodhouse ladies. And I'm very sad to have to admit that, because I COMPLETELY enjoyed their first book, No Safe Haven. Completely!

But for some strange reason, I had to force myself to finish Race Against Time. And I groaned each time there was a scene from Zoya's point of view because I was so tired of listening to her have these HUGE pity-parties about how awful her life was and how God must have turned His back on her because he allowed her to witness the murder. I kept saying "Seriously? that is your argument?" After reading No Safe Haven and everything that Jennie and Andie went through during that book, I thought Zoya was acting pretty wimpy. And blaming God because she had to witness a murder? You'd think she'd be thanking Him for not letting the bullet go a few inches higher and killing HER!

Okay, that might come across a little strong...I just finished the book, so it's all pretty "right there" in my mind. Besides my big problem with the way Zonya acted, I DID come to enjoy the book. To some extent. Sean is really cool and I loved watching him become a part of Anesia, Zoya, Andie, Jenna, and Cole's lives. The whole continued mystery/problem of AMI was pretty neat to see carried over to this second book.

So please don't read my rantings and instantly think "okay, not reading that book!". There are some parts I liked about this book. And maybe I'm the only person who didn't like the way Zoya acted. You might read it and totally relate to Zoya and love the book. But, all I know is, this book wasn't for me.

So, while I didn't enjoy Race Against Time, I did REALLY enjoy No Safe Haven and will most definitely be looking out for future books from Kimberley and Kayla Woodhouse.

Anesia has proved that she is a strong, confident woman. She is a breeder of champion spring racing dogs in North Pole, Alaska. Her daughter, Zoya has witnessed a murder and everything changes. Their life seems to be in constant danger. Anesia hires Sean to help with the kennel and partly to protect her family.

Strange events happen. There is evil in their midst and pinning down the culprit and who is responsible has put everyone on guard. Zoya cannot seem to beat the demons of seeing a murder happen right before her eyes. Where was God? Why does she appear to be a target?

This story is a page-turner. I liked that the chapters were nicely broken up. It didn’t make it much easier to stop reading. Finally, I had to tell myself that I would stop at a certain number of pages and quit at the end of that chapter.

I loved the character Zoya because she had something dramatic happen to her and she had to deal with that. She questioned her faith. I think we all question our faith at one time or another. It’s easy when things go our way. But, sometimes they don’t. Then how do you deal with that? Do you run toward God or away from Him?

It’s always fun to read about another person’s world. In this case, it was Alaska and breeding of racing dogs. If you enjoy a fast paced book that will keep you on your toes, grab this book.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher/author. I was not required to write a positive review.

A young teen witnesses a murder, then becomes the target herself, crumbling her world in fear and a crisis of faith. Set in North Pole, Alaska in winter, the story revolves around Zoya and Anesia, friends of Andie and Jenna from the first book of this exciting series. Definitely a sequel to book one, but with a lot of recap, so it would be possible to read as a standalone, but not as enjoyable.

The main characters from No Safe Haven are back and continue to be faithful friends throughout the crisis. Dog sled racing and trekking plays a big role in the story, which was interesting to learn about, and microchips from a top secret program, as mentioned in book one. Cole continues to be a solid guy, and tries to reach out in friendship to Sean, a new employee at Anesia's kennel. Loved the way Sean tries to connect with Zoya, who is very troubled, using his own struggles with faith, and his attempts to fit into Alaskan culture. He's such a tenderhearted guy. A lot of faith discussions throughout, punctuated with Scripture, help make Zoya's negative self-talk less difficult to read. Switching between viewpoints constantly made it feel choppy at times, but I got used to it after awhile; it didn't seem to flow as well as book one.

Fans of Christian suspense with a little romance will probably enjoy this read. Also helps if you really like dogs and can relate to teens! 3.5 stars

Zoya witnesses a murder while out with her sled dog team. She tries to flee but gets shot in the process. She is left feeling angry at God for allowing so many bad things to happen to her and her friends. Her mother, Anesia, is at her wits’ end, trying to take care of her daughter and keep her kennel running snoothly. She hires a new man named Sean to help out with the dogs but doesn’t have time to deal with the feelings he stirs up within her. The bad guys come after Zoya again, and Sean vows to protect them. But Sean is hiding something too, and Anesia doesn’t know who to trust.

Another excellent suspense novel from the mother-daughter writing team Kimberly and Kayla Woodhouse. We got to spend some time with Jenna, Andie, and Cole, too, which was nice, because I missed them. This story has a mystery of its own that is connected to events in book one, but goes further. I couldn’t put it down. Very well done.

MOM'S REVIEW:

This sequel to "No Safe Haven" is another great read, taking place in North Pole, Alaska. After Zoya witnesses a murder, she and her mother experience suspicious incidents at their kennel and in their lives. As friends and a new employee rally around to protect them, they grow in their faith in God. Zoya and Anesia, her mother, must let go of past disappointments and learn to trust God and those they love.

I give this book five stars for bringing so many things together in one story: military secrets, the danger of Alaskan terrain, single parenthood, and learning to trust God with the details of life. Having visited this area of Alaska, I loved reading about it.

This book is full of mystery and fast paced. If you pick it up, be prepared to approach your characters in a different way. Each section is introduced with bold-face type telling you whose POV you're in for that scene. Another unique writing trait is the switch from 3rd to 1st person. Zoya, the daughter, is written in 1st person while the remaining characters are in 3rd person. While that took me some time to settle into, the change was unique and refreshing.

The plot is intense and deals with death, struggling faith, and new love, all with a thread of suspense woven throughout. If you can slip past the structure of the book, you'll find yourself thoroughly enjoying the Alaskan landscape and this well-written story.

This was an edge of my seat adventure book. Sometimes I did not agree with the actions of the characters, but the actions were true-to-life. The authors did a good job describing the beautiful, rugged landscape of Alaska. I did not always agree with how the romance happened between some of the characters because sometimes it felt forced to me. Because the book was more positive then negative for me, if I have the chance to read other works written by these authors I will.
