I would recommend this series (Ginger Tea, Flash, and Fear) to anyone. A great going-away-to-college gift for kids (maybe really a gift for your own peace of mind) especially if you're afraid they'll be living on utility pizza while you're not watching.
This was one of the first cookbooks I bought when I was on my own. I've made just about everything in it. The pork with apple juice is still one of my go-tos. It's easy to understand, fun to read and everything is good.
The recipes that I've tried from this book are okay to good. So why am I giving it five stars? Because I can't be objective about this book. It's an inextricable part of my childhood. The simple tomato soup at the beginning is one of the very first recipes I made on my own. And the quotes from this book have become constant refrains in my family. We all know that kids in the Middle East eat more tahini than North American kids eat peanut butter. We all know that if you're going to make Poor Man Pizza, you must maul the dough about and be rough with it. And we all know that crepes are just pancakes with stuff on them. My mother's hardback copy of this book has become so beaten and dog-eared that when Raincoast Books made a paperback reprint available in the early 2000s, I bought copies for every single one of my siblings to make sure there were no squabbles over the original. You have to, don't you, when a book is this loved?
