4.25 stars!
this was quite interesting tbh. the new witches taking over beatrice’s place adds more to story because they play dirty compared to beatrice. the fact that no one has died this game yet makes me wonder if there’ll just be a huge massacre towards the end or that this will be the only game where there’s no murderer? seems very unlikely but idk it could be possible! i’m really enjoying battler’s character in the more recent episodes, he’s truly developing and learning more as the episodes go on and it’s wonderful to see how much he has grown, even if he doesn’t have all of his memories atp. i cannot wait to read the second half of ep 5!

Finally we get rid of magical battles with almost-naked one dimensional teen girls. Now this is a chess fight with worthy opponents. I loved Erika, a piece way more interesting that Ange in my opinion (never really connected with Ange, sorry).

Umineko is rated Older Teen and not only has scenes of graphic violence but realistic gore making for some of the more disturbing scenes I have seen in mangas to date as well as some strong language so consider this before hopping into this series of magic, murder, and mystery.

After the events of the 4th Episode Beatrice is a former shell of her usual self but she is bound to the game still and Lambdadelta has decided to continue it in her place. Battler is worried about Beatrice due to her current condition even though she has been his opponent up to now. Whether some sort of Stockholm Syndrome or just due to respect for her as his opponent Battler steps out of the game letting Bernkastel take his place so the pair of witches are not bored and he has time to gather his thoughts regarding Beatrice and to find his determination to take back what belongs to him and Beatrice.

In the meantime Bernkastel has introduced a new character to the family island and is already solving the riddle of the epitaph along with the Battler of this scenario. However she is not the only new person coming to the party as Natsuhi has been receiving phone from someone claiming to be her son as the rules Battler and Beatrice played by are bent and Battler has to do his best to save the game before it descends into new levels of madness.

In the first part of the book my favorite part of the book would have to be teatime with Beatrice when Natsuhi and she are having a pleasant conversation even though things are about to get difficult soon enough. In the second half of the book it would have to be a tender moment between Krauss and Natsuhi even though the scam they have been trying to hide is about to be exposed after Battler claimed the family gold reserves with the help of Bernkastel's pawn Erika.

Episode 5 was my favorite when I read the Umineko visual novel for the first time and this volume reminded me why. Umineko is at its best when it hits the ground running. We just immediately dive into the game. It helps that this is the part of the story where the clues start becoming considerably more helpful. Erika is a great foil to Battler and the set up for their rivalry early on is great. Bringing the focus back to Natsuhi is also a nice way of mirroring Episode 1 and her breakdown is amazing to watch.
