Rate this book
This is a field guide covering all species occurring in the country of Chile. Chile holds a great diversity of habitat types, from the Andes in the north down to the tundra and sub-Antarctic rainforest of Tierra del Fuego in the far south. Chile supports an interesting range of breeding and visiting birds, including nine species found nowhere else in the world. This guide features concise, identification-focused text positioned opposite the colour plates to allow quick and easy reference. Detailed distribution maps are provided for every species, completing the essential field guide to the birds of this spectacular and tourist-friendly country. 'This is the best field guide published thus far to the birds of southern South America.' www.worldtwitch.com (June 2004)

I have a fair number of bird guides for countries and regions all over the world and this is one I keep coming back to. Concise, well laid out and so much information in the introductory section (the part most people don't read) about the country, the birds, bird behaviour and other important aspects of birding. There is information in there that I haven't seen in any other book. The illustrations by David Beadle and Peter Burke are absolutely top notch. One might expect this in a Helm Guide / Princeton Press guide book but it is not always the case. Often you will find a section in another guide, say flycatchers, where the heads seem too big, or they just look off. In birds where plumage is not the ID point you need, this is discouraging. Not so in this book. The illustrations are all spot on. This book is right up there with the Sibley guides which I regard as the best ever published. The only drawback for readers is it's a short book which means it's small, which is just what you want in field guide!! I can't say enough about this book except to say maybe there will be a 2nd edition? Way to go Alvaro!
