After graduating with 1st class honours (in maths, not fantasy writing!), I worked with computers for several years before redundancy convinced me that working with horses might be healthier.
I spent the next decade working in various horse racing yards, and kept on writing. "Song Quest" was eventually published in 1999 and went on to win the Branford Boase Award for best debut children's novel by a UK author.

I've loved this book as a child and it really sparked my love for history and civilizations of the grand past. Now years later, it still holds up. Its cute, adventures and for couple of bucks it costs, its a must.

Să-şi târască prietenul prin jumătate de Babilon în mijlocul nopţii era o adevărată prostie, şi Tiamat ştia bine asta. Dacă erau prinşi, dădeau de mare necaz. Dar trebuia să ajungă în Echipa Celor Douăzeci de Careuri şi, înainte să fie de acord să o ajute, Simeon a vrut să ştie de ce unei persoane care nu avea mai deloc talent pentru joc îi păsa de astfel de lucruri. Dar pentru Simeon nu era de-ajuns să-i spui. Trebuia să vadă cu ochii lui.
Aşteptase o noapte norocoasă ca să-l ducă la faţa locului, deşi nu era sigură că norocul nu-i va părăsi dacă doar unul dintre ei credea în el. Potrivindu-şi pe umăr cureaua punguţei de piele, îşi şterse mâinile transpirate pe veşminte şi aruncă o privire înapoi să se asigure că prietenul ei o urma. Pe străzile luminate doar de stele şi străjuite de construcţiile cu turnuri înalte, Simeon se mişca precum o stafie mică, întunecată.
Când o ajunse din urmă, faţa i se lumină într-un zâmbet.
— Ia spune, unde este acest mare secret al tău?
Tiamat se încruntă.
— În grădina prinţesei, ţi-am mai spus. Ssst! Uite straja!
Simeon înlemni, măsurând cu privirea zidul dublu care separa oraşul interior de cel exterior. Erau aproape de Poarta Sân. Ca de obicei la ora aceea din noapte, porţile erau bine închise cu drugi de bronz. Apa din şanţ era unsuroasă şi plină de gunoaiele pe care le aruncaseră acolo cei din oraşul exterior. Ţinându-se de nas, aşteptară ca zgomotul făcut de sandalele unui soldat care patrula să se stingă în depărtare. Apoi Tiamat îl apucă pe Simeon de mână, traversară strada Sân, luminată de torţe, şi se cufundară în întuneric pe străjile mărginaşe.
Respiră adânc. Inima îi bătea mult mai tare decât atunci când făcuse acest drum singură. Se simţea vinovată că îşi punea prietenul în pericol.
— Eşti sigur că vrei să vii? îi şopti ea.
Băiatul zâmbi. Era mai liniştit, acum că nu se mai aflau pe strada cea puternic luminată.
— De-abia aştept să văd ce e atât de important încât eşti în stare să rişti să înfrunţi mânia maestrului Andulli.
Fetei îi reveni curajul.
— Nu îţi cer să mă bagi în echipă ca să joc, zise ea, conducându-l fără nici o ezitare prin labirintul de străduţe. Doar ca rezervă. Doar ca să pot intra în palat cu tine.

Loved it!

This book was a blind purchase from our local library's withdrawn section (always a great place to visit once a fortnight) and I'm jolly glad I did. While this is primarily a children's story, set in the ancient city of Babylon, the page turning action is nicely balanced with a gentle feel for the historical setting that a more mature audience can study; complimented by a pair of local maps and a modest glossary.
However, I felt that the Babylonian's language could have leant heavier towards the authentic ("Marduk's holy teeth!" and "Sin's rude bits!" anyone?) and was rather infiltrated by modern day exclaimations ("We'd better stay on track" says one character, some 2300 years before the invention of the railway).
Overall, a cracking good read with a pace that slackens only when necessary, likeable heroes and an interesting dilemma on the issue of loyalty to one's peers versus country.
However, I felt that the Babylonian's language could have leant heavier towards the authentic ("Marduk's holy teeth!" and "Sin's rude bits!" anyone?) and was rather infiltrated by modern day exclaimations ("We'd better stay on track" says one character, some 2300 years before the invention of the railway).

It was a cute read that wasn't bad. I can't say I particularily liked it since it took me so long to read for the short read it was meant to be :P An interesting story for someone around the ages 9-12.

Amazing book! So exciting and filled with suspense! An epic tail and wonderfully narrated. Perfect for readers who love to experience the ancient world and who have the taste for adventure. Recommended!
