About the author

I grew up in the south west of England and studied Mathematics at the University of Bath, writing fantasy and science fiction in my spare time. After graduating with 1st class honours (in maths, not fantasy writing!), I worked with computers for several years before redundancy convinced me that working with horses might be healthier.

I spent the next decade working in various horse racing yards, and kept on writing. "Song Quest" was eventually published in 1999 and went on to win the Branford Boase Award for best debut children's novel by a UK author.

În ziua în care macedonenii au atacat oraşul Halicarnas, Alexis se afla pe străzile înguste ale Cartierului Meşteşugarilor, căutându-şi tatăl. Nu că ar mai fi fost vreo şansă să-l găsească după atâţia ani, dar continua să-l caute din obişnuinţă.

Scuza de azi-dimineaţă o constituise o daltă îndoită. De fapt, Kichesias ar fi trebuit să fie cel care să alerge acum ca să împrumute o altă daltă de la vreunul dintre ceilalţi sculptori din cartier, întrucât el o îndoise. Dar, ca sclav, Kichesias ar fi fost bătut pentru neglijenţa sa. Aşa că Alexis îşi asumase greşeala prietenului său, şi nu se grăbea să se întoarcă în atelier unde ceilalţi ucenici aveau să râdă de ceea ce îşi închipuiau că este neîndemânarea obişnuită a lui Alexis. Profitând de libertatea acordată, făcuse un ocol, şi se afla în partea cealaltă a cartierului când lumea începu să alerge la adăpost.
Femeile ţipau şi îşi abandonau hidriile, bărbaţii şi sclavii strigau, şi străzile se umplură de oameni care se împiedicau de vase sparte şi ocoleau măgari scăpaţi din frâu în graba lor de a ajunge la acropolă, în siguranţă. Cu inima bătând puternic într-un amestec de agitaţie şi frică, Alexis îşi abandonă căutările şi îşi croi drum înapoi spre casele sculptorilor, unde locuia.

— Vin macedonenii! strigă el, năvălind pe uşă.

Atelierul era liniştit şi neluminat, iar Alexis se simţi cam penibil. Probabil că meşterul Pasion auzise veştile şi îi trimisese pe toţi acasă. Din întuneric îl priveau statuile nefinisate, în timp ce el îşi trăgea răsuflarea şi încerca să-şi dea seama pe unde ar putea fi Kichesias.

Oraşul Halicarnas se pregătea să facă faţă unui atac de un an, de când armata macedoneană trecuse prin Strâmtoarea Hellespont, în primăvară. Celorlalţi ucenici le făcea mare plăcere să-l necăjească pe Alexis cu privire la invazia care urma să aibă loc. Spuneau că va fi transformat în sclav, precum Kichesias, alături de femei şi de copii, în timp ce ei se vor alătura generalului Alexandru, care cu siguranţă va dori ca armata lui să fie întregită de alţi tineri curajoşi, în vederea marşului spre Persia. Alexis de-abia aştepta să-i vadă cât de curajoşi erau acum.

An action-packed book that proves kids (& those successful at staying kids) are the best kind of people to carry the roles of book protagonists. They don`t care for consequences and have a strong gut feeling about what`s right and what`s wrong. Needless to say, my brother and I enjoyed this book very much in our younger days.

It was a good read, and picked me up out of the dumps. The series was good but not great I think this particular book is the best in the series has some highlights and some good climactic scenes. The ending though could have been composed slightly better and the characters fleshed a little more but overall a good read.

I really wanted to like this book, as it had an interesting concept. However, I found the plot difficult to follow, the ending rushed, and the characters weak. There were a few good scenes in the story and I thought it was well written, but I wouldn't want to read this again.
