"Human groups are the consequence of topographical, subjective projections; if the individual did not project on to the group, the result would be a mere aggregate of individuals, not a group."

Anzieu arrestingly proposes that the group is a dream. As such, it involves archaic phantasies and anxieties of a psychotic type (Anzieu borrows a lot from Klein). He has clearly done a lot of work with groups, "natural" and "artificial," and uncovers some relevant phantasies that circulate: the group is a devouring mouth, a machine that grinds one up, a mother's body to explore or a toilet to take a dump in. There is a lot of interesting material here.
