As a kid, I learned to draw by imitating the style of the Japanese artists who drew my favorite video character, Mega Man, so this book is particularly nostalgic for me. But beyond the nostalgia, the most interesting aspect of this book is how it demonstrates the many different ways a single concept or character can be interpreted by a range of artists from around the globe. As I turned the pages, I would often try to guess what country an artist came from based on the style. But the country of origin for each artist isn't a consistent predictor of their style — with the internet making it easier than ever for artists to inspire each other with vastly differing styles from practically anywhere on earth, the art varies widely within every country represented.

While I wish there was a bit more text — perhaps some commentary from each artist — it's hard to be disappointed with the sheer volume of quality work here. Definitely pick it up if you're a fan of the games, or if you're looking to get inspired by the impressive range of interpretations of a single set of characters.
