Yes, the mouse does behave poorly. But it's a mouse! He's not even being anthropomorphized. Plus, he's terrorizing a human's kitchen, not his own family. If it was a child that made this mess, I wouldn't let this book come home with me. But just to be safe, I'm only going to read it to other people's children.

The raking cornflakes scene is making me throw this in with my other late Autumn stories.

My boys and I would have loved this when they were little. The mouse doesn't just sample the foods, but . Don't read it too fast... look at the details, not least the expressive body language!

Highly recommended to anyone who needs a giggle, even cynical big kids. My mom and brother giggled at the spread I inflicted upon them.

Readers are introduced to a mouse, in his house, who is sleeping. But when he hears feet on the stairs he's up and about because he's hungry! He makes his way to the kitchen where he discovers foods of all delights and wonders who made such a mess!

Children will love helping to identify the foods on the pages. Highly recommended for storytime.

This is a story of a mouse who lives in a house with a family. When the family goes to bed he raids the kitchen and eats all sorts of different foods. He makes a giant mess! The pictures are very fun as the mouse rakes corn flakes, makes castles with brown sugar and takes a bath in a pot.
This is a great picture rhyming book for kids. They can use the rhymes to try to think of new words that could make a new rhyme. It could also be a good way to teach food vocabulary to very beginning ELL.

I did not appreciate the lesson about personal responsibility... my listener, on the other hand, identified with it.

cute but my kids are really too big for this one. i'd say its a 3 and under book. but the pictures are neat with lots of stuff to point out and talk about, but only a few words on each page.

This is such a lovely children’s book. My mother used to read this book to my little sister and I before bed. We were charmed by the mouse and captivated by the illustrations. 20 years later, it’s still one of our favorites. Our copy has long since been lost, but the story has remained rooted in my mind. I can still recall every line, including the tribute to the author’s dad “who loves cornflakes” at the beginning of the book.

This was a fun book to read! It was very simple to read, but it was full of color. It made me giggle at some of the things the mouse did. The mouse made the entire mess, but blamed the mess on the house owners. I loved how the book rhymed and all of the different adjectives that were used. The illustrations were very cute too!

Very good writing and art—all three of my boys loved this book up to about age 2-4. Or five or even six—if they seemed to need a “comfort story” on a particular evening.

The writing has a very nice rhythm to it—important for young children who are seeking something reassuring when transitioning to bedtime.

Cute mouse comes out of hiding when the big people go to bed. Raises all kinds of heck to get some food and leaves a mess behind...but it's all so adorable, who cares? Love reading this one to kids who get a kick out of the naughty mouse's behavior.

There's not much of a story to this one, but Riley's colorful pictures of food made my stomach growl.

Playful and colorful cut paper art. Illustrator used sponges to spread paint on paper which she later cut and assembled into an illustration.

A fun book with interesting illustrations - there are lots of good details to pick out. I saw no reason for the mouse to be gendered but enjoyed it otherwise!
