I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. And, if you're interested, sign up for my newsletter, a quarterly sneak peek into upcoming releases and projects. Thank you for your interest and support.

God Bless and Happy Reading!

Spoiler alert ... the male main character mistakes a regular old tourist maid-of-honor for his new partner in an *undercover* sting operation for a drug cartel. He's never met her and doesn't ask if she is the right person? Really? I wonder how this guy ends up getting caught by the bad guys. Sorry. From the very start the plot was so hard to buy that I kept making excuses for sticking with the book. Likable characters! See, I said something nice.

Supremely unrealistic but I don’t think it’s supposed to be! It’s a rollicking fun adventure! I have to say the dysfunctional relationship with the sister made me drop it a star. She was very toxic and I don’t buy that she changed at the end.

I thought this was a fun read. It sucked me in from the beginning and I had to keep reading to see what would happen next. When Scarlet arrives in Mexico for her sisters wedding she gets into the wrong cab at the airport her life is changed forever. I liked Scarlet; she was easy to relate to. Especially her bookworm tendencies. She was likable and it was fun to see her take charge when she was clearly way out of her comfort zone. When she enters the cab she come face to face with hottie Luke, who she thinks her sister has set her up with. Luke is actually a special agent also in Mexico for a wedding. He thinks Scarlet is his contact/partner on his mission, and it takes awhile for them to figure things out. I liked Luke, he was good for Scarlet. The two had good chemistry and it was fun watching their story unfold.

There were a couple things that didn’t make sense to me, I won’t mention them because I don’t want to give away any of the story. They were easy to overlook though and didn’t distract me from the story. I liked the side characters, Benito and Lucia. Benito was just a romantic at heart. It was actually kind of funny to see how passionate he was about romance. Lucia was also likable, she had definitely gotten herself way over her head. I was hoping to hear a little more about them at the end. I liked the side story with Scarlet’s sister and how that all worked out.

It’s Christian fiction, but those elements were pretty subtle and not at all over the top. It never felt preachy for me, which is hard to find in Christian lit. Overall, I thought it was very enjoyable and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I was on a plane, and I needed to read without thinking while I was physically ill (I do not travel well.) It was more or less what it promised to be (a charmingly research-free 007 story), and normally I give two stars to things that are exactly what they appear to be, but... it's too lame for that.

The villain seems to be the only halfway interesting character. Kind of a shame, that.

ETA:
I take back my initial negative review. This book surprised me with some characterization mid-3/4ths of the way through. I thought the plot sort of ground along, and the spirituality was of the hamstrung "let's reach a BROAD audience" variety, but that's what you'd expect from Harlequin, and within those stifling confines, it actually has a lot of self-awareness and relational growth.

Kudos.

A fast read, because I couldn't put it down. I always love reading anything by Susan May Warren. I came across this book at my local library book sale. Great characters, story line and as always a beautiful message of faith, love, trust and hope.

While Scarlet's quest to find herself during her unexpected stint undercover is well-drawn, I found her relationship with Luke to happen far too quickly. I like the concept of these "Missions of Mercy," but feel like the characters need to know each other better.

As a romantic suspense enthusiast from way back when, I jumped at the chance to check out Susan May Warren’s Love Inspired Suspense Series: Missions of Mercy. Susan’s a prolific author, but I’ve only read one of her books. So I was eager to see what she would bring to the table for the romantic suspense genre. Here are the pros and cons of what her LI series has to offer . . .

First, the pros:

Exotic locations: check
Heart-stopping suspense: check
Plucky, resourceful heroines: check
Tough heroes with big hearts: check
Just the right amount of romance and humor as befits the danger: check
Perfect length for me to finish while proctoring exams: check
Strong inspirational themes: check
For a bonus, these guys are ex-military: Two checks!

Now, the cons:

As far as I could discover, she’s only published three in this series.
Which definitely left me wanting more!

My favorite aspect of the Missions of Mercy Series is that the books are written from a Christian worldview. Kudos to Susan May Warren for making faith an integral part of her characters’ lives. And the spiritual issues they wrestle with are not superficial. They matter in the real world. The way I see it, when the man with the gun facing down a relentless physical enemy can also operate in the spiritual realm–now that’s a great story!

The third book of this series, Undercover Pursuit, features Luke Dekker. Luke mistakes unassuming Scarlett Hanson for an undercover operative and drags her into his mission: to protect an agent named Lucia. Lucia is staging a wedding to quasi-criminal Benito in order to flush out his father, a ruthless human trafficker. Once Luke realizes Scarlett is not his contact, he tries to fix things, but complications soon abound.

I appreciated Scarlett the most of the three women protagonists. I enjoyed how she lost herself in the books she read and loosed the power of her imagination to help Luke out of a few tight spots. And the comedic elements of Luke and Scarlett’s story made me smile.

I don't read Love Inspired/Love Inspired Suspense books. They tend to be a little too shallow and cheesy for my taste. Or at least those I've tried. Obviously there are many and I haven't sampled them all. I know that a lot of writers get their start writing these and I think that's great! The only thing that could induce me to pick up one of these, though, is seeing the name of an author I already know and trust. Susan May Warren is my absolute all time favorite author, and I would read the phone book if she wrote it.

I read this book a few years ago, and I picked it up again mostly as a light time killer between some other things I was reading. I didn't remember much about the plot so I figured it would be entertaining enough the second time around. And, like I said, I always enjoy anything Susie writes. :) I had a great time reading this book! Though it's short and the timeline is a little crunched, the plot and characters are complex, authentic, and well rounded. The plot is a little bit of mix between fantastical, fairy tale fiction and romantic suspense. There were definitely times it veered into the, 'this would never happen in real life' realm, but it's basically beach read fiction at it's best. Not entirely realistic, but a light, fun escape. Reality is overrated sometimes anyway. ;-) While the plot didn't take itself too seriously, the characters were incredibly realistic in their struggles and issues. I truly felt for them and they gave the book a lot of heart. As always with a Susan May Warren book, I felt I was taking away the same insights, lessons, and hope that the characters were at the end. I highly recommend this as a fun, uplifting, little escape with a lot of heart. And if you enjoy this, Susie has a lot of other full length, more in-depth novels to choose from, all of which I also highly recommend. :)

Undercover pursuit by Susan May Warren

Need a suspense??? This is the quick read to grab!! A plane ride, afternoon at the lake, a morning with coffee -- perfect spot to catch a crazy story of mistaking someone for someone else! :)

Some strikingly interesting sections that caught my attention:

God hadn't listened to him since the day he'd broken the Cardinal rules (do not commit adultery) ... He might as well resign himself to the fact that God wasn't going to trust him again.

I can't get past the fact that although I know God has forgiven me. I can't erase what happened. That doesn't change what I did. I can't imagine why God would be on my side. I keep waiting for Him to betray me, to walk away.

God isn't like your father. He's not going to betray you. and he doesn't treat us as we think we should be treated.

A part of me loved being in the limelight... For a long while, I thought that being in front of the camera was where I belonged, but you know, it blinds you. You always see yourself through the lens of others until ... until you don't know who you are. Until you don't know yourself at all.

You're trying to lead, I get that - most women are worried that we men are going to lead you someplace bad - but I promise to take care of you.

That's what love does. It hopes and believes in a logical explanation. and it forgives.

He trusted her because ... because that's what you do when you love someone. Even if they don't deserve it- you trust them because the alternative would haunt you, tear you to shreds.

Even though he'd been unfaithful to God, God hadn't, couldn't be unfaithful to him. Because God wasn't a betrayer. He was truth and honesty and loyalty and love.

Title: UNDERCOVER PURSUIT
Author: Susan May Warren
Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense
May 2011
ISBN: 978-0-373-44440-3
Genre: Inspirational/romantic suspense

Security Agent, Luke Dekker has been hired to protect Lucia at her wedding. Another special agent is supposed to act as a bridesmaid, but somehow there’s been a terrible mix-up. The female agent hasn’t shown up. And he’s with the woman he believes is the agent, a woman who was supposed to be at an entirely different wedding…

Scarlett Hanson is trying to be brave. She thought that her husband’s groom-to-be had been her boyfriend—at least until her sister showed up on the scene. Then he turned his back on Scarlett…now, she’s supposed to be a bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding. Except, the man her sister asked to be Scarlett’s date seems to be someone else…

Obviously, Scarlett isn’t trained for the high-stakes mission now trapping them both…and worse, Luke is falling for her, which is not part of the assignment.

UNDERCOVER PURSUIT is the third book in Ms. Warren’s Missions of Mercy series. It easily stands alone. I think UNDERCOVER PURSUIT is the best book of the trio, it has a hero and a heroine that I could cheer for from page one, a fun plot, and a simple misunderstanding that led to a huge disaster in the making.

Scarlett is hurting, betrayed by her sister and her ex-boyfriend. Luke is struggling to remake his life after he realized he didn’t like the man that he was turning out to be. This is a combination with sparks from page one, and it didn’t let up. I loved this book from start to finish. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $5.50. 225 pages.

Great conclusion to the series. I really enjoyed all three books in this series. This one was fun because of the whole wedding theme mixed with the danger of the drug cartel. I loved Benito and Lucia's story even though they weren't the main characters. I found the whole supermodel sister and Duncan, the ex scenario quite enjoyable, too. There was a lot going on, but not so much that it was hard to follow. Last, the relationship between Scarlett and Luke was quite endearing. The whole set up was a blast to follow, not to mention the confusing line between them acting their parts versus their real feelings developing.

This was a fun, yet suspenseful read and right on par with the other books in the series. I have enjoyed all of the LI Suspense novels that I've read by Susan May Warren (four total) and this was no exception. I feel like the couples at Stryker International are my friends, and I've enjoyed getting to know them through each of their stories. Undercover Pursuit was a delightful, if not somewhat implausible scenario, but the author pulled it off and made it believable enough so it was a fun escape for me. I wanted to keep reading, and that's not usually the case with LI books.

Undercover Pursuit by Susan May Warren had me intrigued from the first page. I examined it along with several other books I recently downloaded, just looking through the first few pages for their hooks, the ways that they connected with the reader. Wow, did U.P. ever connect! From the get-go, I had trouble putting it down.

What starts out as a lark, a curious case of mistaken identity, quickly becomes an desperate attempt for protection and a life-threatening situation. Luke Dekker is undercover to nab a major player in a drug cartel. He's not that thrilled that it has to be done at a wedding, though, and he's even less thrilled about his partner for the weekend. The beautiful agent/bridesmaid pretending to be his fiancee made the wedding party accessible to him. Only the girl, Scarlett Hanson, isn't his contact. She isn't even an agent and has no training for the task she must complete. The twists in the plot appear impossible, but Ms. Warren masterfully unravels the strands before tying them into a satisfying bow.

Undercover Pursuit didn’t have as much suspense as the first two books, but I found it very entertaining and it’s my second favorite of the series. I loved the plot concept of “mistaken identities” from both Luke and Scarlett, and then, following them as they try to figure out what to do about it. Also, this book has a strong faith element. Luke is struggling to realize that he can be forgiven by God for his past mistakes, while Scarlett is trying to realize that she is worth something in Gods eyes and not just a shadow of her sister. Lastly, I loved how the whole Stryker team shows up near the end to “save the day” and I loved the epilogue. If you’ve read my reviews before, then you know that I’m a sucker for a happy ending. :)

I almost rated this wonderful Christian suspense story a 5! The way Susie gets into the character's heads and mind (and don't forget their hearts) is incredible! She acknowledges their physical and emotional needs in a subtle and tasteful way, while allowing their relationship to take its highs and lows.

The suspense of the wrong person being in the wrong place at the wrong time creates a dilemma of fear, drama of mixed truth and lies, and a fantasy of what might be. While Luke concentrates on doing his job as a security agent, God allows a roller coaster situation to help both main characters to trust God and learn to love.

This was an okay book. My MIL loaned it to me and I read it in a day. Personally I found it just a tad unbelievable, I felt like this book was written without much research. Although I listed it as Christian it is not heavy in preaching as some Christian books can be. It is more a book about a Christian living her life and not pushing her beliefs on others.

If you want books that are well done and seem more realistic and just as clean as this try Traci Hunter Abramson, she has the background to understand what she writes.

I loved this book! The story is exactly the fantasy I've had since I was a little girl who grew up watching James Bond movies. Regular girl gets swept up in case of mistaken identity and helps save the day. Of course there's a healthy dose of romance with the dashing hero. This is a clean novel but I could still feel the heat between the main characters. Really delighted to have found Susan May Warren and am downloading the other books in this series (this being book 3). This was a fun and easy read and I look forward to reading more of her work.

So this wasn't the usual Susan May Warren Deep Haven type story that I just adore. It was fluffier and pretty far fetched, yet still had her good writing and life truths. Not a big fan of insta-love but I suppose with these short books there is no way around it. Also in hindsight I think I would have liked it more had I read from the beginning of the series as the other characters were woven throughout the story and knowing their back stories would have helped. Going to read Point of No Return and Mission: Out of Control to get the full story.

While Scarlet's quest to find herself (instead of bowing to her sister's wishes) during her unexpected stint undercover is well-drawn, I didn't buy her immediate relationship with Luke. I love the concepts behind the "Missions of Mercy," but feel like the characters need to know each other better to be convincing.

This riveting suspense romance an innocent young lady climbs into the wrong cab and enters a life of espionage and danger that leads to romance better than her favorite books. Innocence alone gets her through the trials of two brides and their respective weddings - and, best of all, opens a world of faith to her spy partner. Loved it.

This would actually be a four star book if the beginning had not been so preposterous. The idea a security agency as talented as I have read in the last two in the series would make such a basic mistake is silly. However, if one can accept the beginning, it is an exciting read.

This was a light read, and an enjoyable book. Believe it or not, I like the occasional romance (I am a romantic at heart). The book had all the good elements of a suspense/mystery/romance novel.
And one of my favorite kind of romance novels is one about unlikely lovers. Definitely a fun read.
