Emmaline Carruthers shed more than her clothes under the brutal western sun... Her 'citified' ways went next, along with her plans for a quiet, dignified life. Instead, she found herself bound to a hotheaded cowboy in a most inconvenient marriage!
Ranch foreman Matthew Gerrity was used to having things go his way... So why was he having so much trouble getting his eastern beauty of a wife to accept that he was the one in charge?
And the town of Forbes Junction, Arizona, would never be the same!
Carolyn Davidson began writing in 1986, knowing absolutely nothing about the craft. Her first three books were rejected by Harlequin.
She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashion, "Well, honey, you can't start any younger!" And she was right.
Having spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and working woman, she's privileged to have a career that makes her dreams possible. Writing historical romance gives her the opportunity to travel, to visit all those places where our forefathers staked their claim on this country of ours. And then she goes home and writes their stories, maybe not exactly as they lived them, but as her imagination portrays them.
Carolyn lives in the South, where romance thrives, and where the sun shines almost every day of the year. In fact, some days it is difficult to stay glued to her computer, especially when the birds are singing and the flowers are in full bloom.
She lives not far from the ocean, close to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most romantic cities in the world. Moreover, time at the beach is easy to come by. Does she enjoy her life? You bet! Harlequin allows her to write the books she loves, and her editor is patient with her quirks and foibles. Her family, though scattered in various states, is supportive, and her husband is a constant source of inspiration.
An easy going romantic read, interesting plot twist that the two step siblings are getting married to raise their own step sister; the baddy plot is pretty silly
Carolyn Davidson is a very talented author. She takes you to places were you feel you could just step in and feel at home. I’ve read many of her books and have enjoyed the story but also all the historical events.
Emmaline Caruthers receives notice that her estranged father and his wife have been killed in a freak accident and what does she want to do with her little sister? When she arrives in Arizona (to collect her sister and take her back East), she gets another surprise.
Her father wrote a will wanting Emmaline to stay in Arizona and make a home with her sister and his wife's son, Matthew Gerrity, who is the foreman of the Caruthers Ranch. In other words, her estranged father wants Emmaline to marry her stepbrother!
Emmaline and Matthew have never met before and seem to be too much alike; both are stubborn and used to getting their way. I have to say that this is one of the strangest premises for a novel. However, after this low-point, the story improves considerably.
When Matthew abandons bachelorhood, someone is very upset; strange things start to happen to Emmaline. Thus, a mystery is added to this plotline. The reader cares about these two characters, as flawed as they are. It is interesting to see these two try to find a way to adapt and accommodate each other without giving up their own free spirit.
I had a hard time getting past the bizarre plot. The characters were interesting and the author seemed to capture the small-town atmosphere. 3 stars
While I enjoyed reading this, it was one of those novels where the main couple butted heads all the time. It was easy and interesting to watch the two fall in love, and I often found myself laughing. The characters were filled with personality and fire, and I always love a romance novel with some drama. Other than the constant fighting, I can find nothing negative to say about this novel.
