Orphaned in a war she can't remember, Kaguya is happy with her adopted family. But chaos returns when a mysterious boy tells her of her past as a princess from another world. With her guardian, Kaguya sets out on a journey from world to world to claim her birthright. Courted by some, hunted by others, her destiny is feared by all, for it is her fate to decide which worlds will rule and which shall die.
The Good: The artwork, dialogue, and storyline are as good as ever here.
The Bad: Along with a misuse of God's name and mention of a girl being "well-endowed," there's some Barbie-doll-like nudity here.
Conclusion: Usually, a reliable series of any kind doesn't vary too much from episode to episode. The first volume of Planet Ladder was a little bit different--cleaner content--but, since then, they've all been the same...in both good and bad ways. Still, the content issues are not enough to keep me from continuing the series.
THE MAD PRINCE BECKONS but for real this time, lots of Seeu. Being...Seeu and incomprehensible.
I love this man.
Kaguya, finding herself masquerading as a quiet, blanked faced "Princess of Choosing" somehow gets kidnapped because sure. Is there another mode of transportation in this place?
Whisked off to Seeu's decrepit practically uninhabitable castle she basically bullies Seeu into being a better host. One imagines he's really not used to bossy females.
Annnddddd then shit gets real. Meshie you're adorable but thick. Bambi also makes a life changing decision after coming to the realization she REALLY misses Kaguya.
Like her life has no meaning without her so sure lemme sign up to "obey" this crazy asshole Kura in hopes it'll get me closer to "saving" Kaguya. Your timing is awful Bambi.
Nan Rymer's translation is smoother (even if yet another translation change occurred - Bambi's horse is now Naja, not Nadja) and feels more natural as well.
So the story continues but now we are introduced to more characters and are given a bit expansion on the world. What I find interesting about this series is that even though this is a 'chosen one' type of fantasy there isn't really a lot of magical elements in the story such as Harry Potter. Aside from living weapons, a few mages, and a few powerful abilities (such as the ability to travel between the different worlds) there really isn't much magic in the story.
That being said, the lack of magic in the manga makes it difficult to understand the magic system in the series. I can't even tell what kind of magic system it is or if the series has one. (But from what I've been seeing so far with lack of explanation I'm leaning more towards a soft magic system.)
We get a little bit of Bambi's background and we get to see her start to develop as the story separates the characters. We also see the beginning of the relationship between Kaguya and Prince Seeu. We see the mental toll of being raised in isolation on Seeu and how it causes him to be incapable with normal human interaction.
Not much else to say except that I liked it. It gets better and more interesting as we move on.
