Time Travel #5

Under a Prairie Moon

"He is the most frightening, handsome man I have ever seen"

Although these words had been written in another time, in another woman's diary, Kathy Conley thought they described Dalton Crowkiller perfectly. He was the kind of a man a woman would sin for, die for, if she could only keep him in her arms.

But the dangerous half-breed belonged to the untamed West, and he'd been claimed by another woman long ago. Time itself would keep him and Kathy apart, until he was given one last chance to change the course of his life. Together, they found there was no past, no future, only the wonder of the present, the raw, aching desire between them, and a fierce love that could be satisfied but never quenched.

Madeline Ruth was born on 1963 in California, where she raised. She married her high school sweetheart and they have three sons, all handsome enough to be cover models. Growing up, her favorite pastimes were going to the movies and going horseback riding on Saturday mornings at Griffith Park. Madeline has always been "horse happy." A horse was the one thing she asked for on every birthday and every Christmas. Many years later, that dream came true when she bought an Appaloosa mare named Candy—because she was so sweet. Madeline loves animals. Over the years, she's had numerous dogs, cats, fish, mice, hamsters, turtles and birds, and her horse, of course. The most exotic pet was a crocodile that belonged to one of her sons. Currently, she has a terribly spoiled Pomeranian named Teddi, six goldfish, a catfish, and a betta. When she's not writing, Madeline enjoys going to movies and the theater. Her favorite plays are The Phantom of the Opera, The Scarlet Pimpernel and her all-time fave, Beauty and the Beast. She also loves reading, going to lunch with her best friend, collecting Star Wars, The Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast memorabilia, and playing with the most beautiful, adorable, brilliant grandkids in the world.

Madeline started writing when her children were still at home, and she wrote for several years, finding time to write after her children were in bed and her husband was at work. In true cliché fashion, she wrote the books and put them under the bed, never telling anyone what she was doing, until one day she let a friend read one. Encouraged by her friend's comments, and armed with a copy of Writer's Market supplied by said friend, Madeline began sending out query letters. After six years and 31 rejections, Leisure Books bought Reckless Heart, and she's been writing ever since. After writing several Westerns, Madeline decided to try her hand at something else and wrote her first vampire romance. It was a short story titled "Masquerade" for an anthology. She loved writing that so much that she wrote her first full-length vampire romance, Embrace the Night, and thus Amanda Ashley was born. One of her dreams had been to write for Harlequin, and she accomplished that in 2003 with the publication of her Silhouette Romance novel, Dude Ranch Bride. Madeline loves to hear from her readers. You can reach her online at DarkWritr@aol.com or by mail at PO Box 1703, Whittier, CA 90609-1703.

I found this book in my attic in a box full of books that belonged to my mother. I ALMOST didn't read it because the whole time travel thing didn't appeal to me but I'm glad I did. While thebook has your typical romance novel cover, I didn't find it to be a typical romance novel. It contained lots of twists and turns and had me so curious as to the ending that I was up until the wee hours of the morning trying to finish it. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

I think I love anything Madeline Baker writes. I haven't run into anything I don't like so...

The book was a real page turner. I read it in less than a day (24 hours) and I loved every second of it. I cried at the end. Any book can make you laugh but it takes a good one to make you cry.

Great time-travel story. I loved Dalton so much. He was well-written and i couldn't get enough of his personality.
Kathy was lovely as well. I liked the fact that she took her time to mourn Wayne and allow her emotions to develop in a good pace.
I liked Lydia as well. She was spolied and only cared about Dalton's fame and the danger he represented. While Katy loved him and saw him as a man whom had dreams and regrets.
I'm glad tehy had a happy ending.
Will 100% re-read it.

As always you out done yourself again, I've never believed in ghost before but if I ever did I would wish for one like this one and then to go into the past and return back, just made my heart sing. You do such a good job, I just love your books. Thank you again for such good story. Ada G.

I am not into time travel reads. This, however, was exquisitely written and I am so very glad I read it. Loved the tender adoration between Kathy and Dalton. So delighted with the happy ending! Highly recommend it!! Enjoy!

This is a wonderful story of romance and the paranormal, and is the book that made me a huge fan of Madeline Baker.

In this story, widow Kathy Conley inherits her husband's family farm after his death. No one has lived in the house for quite some time, and when they do move in, no one stays. Turns out, the place is haunted by the ghost of a man who was wrongly accused of trying to rape the wife of the original owner.

Dalton Crowkiller, tough, good looking, half-breed Native American, was lusted after by the farmers wife, Lydia Conley, who threw herself at him every chance she got back in 1873. One night in the barn, Lydia attempts to seduce Dalton and when he won't reciprocate, she screams rape, quickly prompting his hanging.

Fast forward to present day- Kathy, who is overcome with grief, busies herself fixing up the house. One day, she finds a diary jammed in an old dresser drawer and here she reads the story of how Lydia lusted after Dalton, the ranch hand. As time passes, Kathy hears and sees things that she can't explain and eventually discovers that the ghost she is seeing is that of Dalton. A relationship develops, which she explains away as her being a grieving, lonely widow. One day, Dalton talks her into buying a horse, and while riding together, they pass under the hanging tree on the property and are propelled into the past where Dalton gets the chance to clear his name.

I won't give anymore away, but I can tell you that this book inspired me to write paranormal thrillers. Madeline Baker has a way of drawing you in, and keeping you there. I could not put this book down and have read it at least 100 times! If you love romance, time travel and good looking Native American men, this book is for you! Excellent read!

I have enjoyed the Madeline Baker books I have read so far. I was excited to read this one, since it had paranormal elements I liked (ghost and time-travel)and was rated so highly. I looked for Under a Prarie Moon at our local library and bookstores with no luck and after about a year and a half, I purchased it online.
Initially, I was very disappointed. The first half of the book is set in 1990's at the ranch the heroine inherited from her dead husband. She starts to see glimpses of ghost Dalton (the hero)and then he materializes and talks to her. He helps her carry packages, move furniture and make repairs around the ranch, etc! He is solid to her(they can kiss and embrace), but others cannot see him at all. I know that one must keep an open mind when reading romance, but come on!
The second half takes place when they get transported back in time to the late 1800's and I found this half to be pretty good. I would give the first half of the book a "2" and the second half a "3 1/2" to"4", to average about a "3". I liked it, but it would not be a keeper for me.

I love this book, couldn't put it down. At first I wasn't really sure but it kept me intrigued so I kept reading. Will probably read again as I normally do with books I like. Have since read this book a few more times and it is still one of my favourites. Love the hero Dalton,

Well...

I guess I just do not like the whole time travel idea. I would spend my money on sci-fi if I did!
