Seven (Yaoi Manga) - Nook Edition
“I’ll give you a name that’ll suit you perfectly...”
Nana (no-name in Japanese) has no memory of his childhood before the age of twelve, when a store owner took him in and cruelly named him. The only clues to Nana’s past life are the burn scars on his legs and his irrational fear of fire.

Enter Mitsuha, a vagabond writer, who crashes Nana’s place at the insistence of a mutual friend. At first, Nana loathes Mitsuha’s very existence – although he can’t sleep alone, Nana doesn’t like it when his new roommate climbs into bed with him, either – but eventually, he warms to Mitsuha’s sincerity and kindness and finds happiness waking beside him. Can their budding relationship help Nana come to terms with his unknown past? Are Mitsuha’s feelings real, or is Nana simply a replacement for someone he lost long ago?

Momoko Tenzen, creator of The Paradise on the Hill, presents two tales of haunted pasts and forbidden loves sure to intrigue and delight!

Like others have said: too much jammed into too short a manga. Would be a lot better if it was more fleshed out and split between at least two books. The middle story came out of nowhere and shouldn't have been inserted there. Think it would have been much better at the end as like, an extra.

Overall entertaining and I really like the art.

The good thing about re-reading my manga (besides the obvious) is that I barely remember some of them, lol!

Hmmmm...very touching story! but .....what is Nana past? How did he lost his memories ? What was his relationship with the previous owner? And why didn't the brothers meet? Too many questions unanswered! The story don't give closure. Feel it need more... Still a good story though! Won't be reading it again a 2nd time but still good!

This is a bittersweet beautiful story centered around a young man with no past that he can remember. The first manga that I've ever bought, and I don't regret it at all. I've read this a good 17 or 20 times, and I love it every time because of the interaction between the two main characters.

Early 2000s manga hit different. So many of them fall victim to having a really interesting idea for the plot, but then it just isn't executed well at all.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the poor execution in this manga is that there is too much going on in not enough space, and yet somehow, because there is so much happening at once, there also feels like nothing is happening because we aren't given time to slow down, process events, and get to know the characters.

I really like the idea behind this manga, and I think if the mangaka would have been allowed to keep working on it or had written it now, where they are generally given more space to tell a story, it could have been really well done.

Ahhh, I REALLY loved the second of the two stories, but I may not have without the set up of the first. So this is two short stories, connected because they cover the romances of each of two brothers who were separated when they were very young. In the first, we get the conceit of the older brother searching for his younger brother (and falling for someone along the way - very cute and sweet!) and in the second WE HAVE ADOPTED BROTHERS, from the point of view of the one who is NOT adopted and doesn't KNOW his bro is adopted and so feeling SUPER guilty for being super in love with him. It's so good for me.

*More of a 3.5*

I honestly liked this a lot. Not gonna lie I did get a little nervous it was going to turn out to be incesty, but it didn't. The second story was questionable, but eh.

I really wish that we got to see Nanao and Mitsuha meet. I'm disappointed it didn't end with a conclusion on that, it was so close and then it just ended. I also wanted more of Nana's backstory and his trauma with the fire. That was never fully explored either. I was hoping there was going to be a sequel to this volume, but I don't think there is. I just know I would've loved this so much more if it had just gone deeper.

This is two short stories compiled into one. The stories are great, but they lack follow through. The character dynamics are crammed into a short amount of pages and that causes for a great deal of questions to go unanswered. There are far too many holes and not enough pages given to fill them. The characters and their stories are so complex that trying to present them in such a confined space does the stories an injustice.

Not crazy about the art style but it was a relatively unique storyline.

This is actually two short stories in one book, and therein lies the problem: the mangaka tries to pack a lot of character history and relationship development into a very small amount of pages-- and if Momoko Tenzen has the storytelling chops to pull it off, she's certainly not showing it here.

The dialogue is melodramatic and choppy, as is the storyline. In the first story in particular, the development of the relationship between the two leads seem far to sudden and overdramatic, given what we've seen of their interactions. The story is too short to get a real sense of who the characters are, and there's little to justify the sense of intense attachment Nana feels for Mitsuha. Sure, he's been abandoned in the past, but the author doesn't do enough to show why he's attached to Mitsuha in particular, and not someone else. It's hardly romantic. The second story is loosely connected to the first, and a little better but not by much. It's a pretty typical yaoi setup, entirely predictable for a seasoned yaoi fan, but you do get a better sense of the characters in this one.

Both stories would benefit from being expanded; lots of details were skimmed over which could have added to the reader's understanding, and there could have been more substantial character building. The art, too, could use more detail. Tenzen has a really clean and delicate style, and a lot of panels are used on close ups of the characters faces to show their expressions. These worked fairly well. However, she leaves a lot of the backgrounds sparse where they could have been used to reveal things about the characters-- for example, what do they have in their living space, how do they organize their bedrooms, etc. All in all, this was a really forgettable read.

Review originally posted at mangaupdates.com in September, 2009.

Engaging enough premise and pretty, soft art, but lacking in follow through. The story is good - good enough that I CARED... that it wasn't developed well.

If a story doesn't catch my interest, I don't even finish it. (You don't have to drink the whole keg, to know the beer sucks balls -lol), This one I gobbled up the entire soft and delicate art and story, but was frustrated with the sum of the whole. And the drama of the physical relationship was aggrevatingly undertold and under illustrated.

This story left so many unanswered questions like why didn't the brothers meet? What is the relationship between nana and the late owner of the liquor shop? What is nanas' past? Why does he have amnesia? This was not one of this mangakas best pieces of work. For that reason I'm giving this manga two stars

I expected the two stories to tie together and it abruptly ended . Too much going on for one graphic novel, so much so, it felt unfinished.
