Petit, déjà, je rêvais d'être explorateur, comme le général carthaginois Hannibal. C'est dans la Vienne du début du XXe siècle que je découvre un continent encore inexploré : l'esprit humain.
J'ai la passion de guérir et je traque l'inconscient partout où il est. En toute modestie, je vous le dis : « Je cherche à libérer l'humanité ! »

Tô de férias e me prometi que só leria literatura nesse período, portanto o quadrinho é sobre Freud, mas ainda é literatura, viu? Rá!
Enfim, há tempos procurava um pdf desse livrinho da Corinne Maier e da Anne Simon, mas só agora encontrei esse em francês, embora já tenha saído aqui no Brasil pela Companhia das Letras.
Era o que eu esperava, alguns momentos divertidos interligados aos casos, teorias e eventos da vida de Freud mais famosos, mas nada com o qual a gente não possa viver sem.
Maier e Simon também fizeram biografias ilustradas de Marx e Einstein, as quais também estou pronta para desvendar.

This is one of two (so far?) comics biographies by the team of Maier, a respected psychologist who has herself published several NON-comics scholarly books, and respected artist Anne Simon. I also just read their Marx, which I also liked, though this was more fun than Marx because, well, Marx was a little crazier and Freud is not so well respected as he once was for his theories. And Maier is a psychologist, so she maybe knows this territory a bit better than political philosophy.
So, as most people on the planet know, Freud is the father of psychoanalysis, a therapist and author of many books on dreams and various explanations of his theories such as id-eg-superego and conscious, subconscious, unconscious. I studied him in Psychology classes decades ago and we were all reverential about him at the time, but it seems to me ideas like the Oedipal Complex and his theories about Dora and other famous patients seem kinda farfetched now. He wanted to be a scientist but was really a dreamer, an imaginative thinker, seems to me now.
But these ideas about talk therapy, the need to talk through your problems and the idea that your problems are often rooted in your past, your childhood, that sex and dreams are central in everyone's lives, I think much of his superstructural ideas are still highly influential today. Seems to me at the moment it's a kind of literary view of the mind, grounded in metaphors about how mind works.Like Marx, he wanted to heal wthe world, and he did some good trying.
This book reveals he was not a saint, not perfect. We see his life story and the breadth of his ideas in 54 (!!) pages, which is sort of silly, in a way, but as they probably know, almost no one is going to pick up his work now unless they are forced to by some professor. So since these ideas still have cultural legs, since they explain how many of us still think about the mind, let's help us see how these ideas took root, and give you a quick ride down that Freudian tunnel, eh? Why not? And it's a pretty good quick starter kit, as obviously reductive as it is; you can from a page on, say, Dora, decide to read his book about her, maybe. Fun and useful.

Reading other reviews I was surprised that people actually were expecting a deep introduction to the Freudian theories. Surely this comix doesn't offer it.
But it's a wonderful brief introduction into Freud's biography, hystory surrounding him and basics of his methods. Presented with nice humour and amusing drawings.
I really enjoyed those 30 min I've spent with this book :)

The illustrated books I've read before were definitely graphic novels, but this one is more of a comic book. However, it's definitely not meant for kids because all of us know what Freud was famous more and there a few phallic symbols present in this book too, of course.
I can't say that C. Maier told us the biography of Freud (as it is mentioned on the cover). This book is more of a story about how his mind worked, how he managed to come to the conclusions we all know and what exactly these conclusions are.
Advantages of the book:
- Hilarious and vivid illustrations;
- The cover by МИФ is a booklover's heaven: bulging letters of the title and bulging images as well.
- This book makes you want to read a more in-depth biography of Freid and the full story of his life.
Disadvantages:
- It's too expensive even when bought with a discount;
- There are only 55 pages, so you're left wanting... more of this beauty!

School vacations are over, Halloween is over, and we are back in the grind, at least until Christmas time. There is nothing to distract us from our problems, so we just might go and try to work on them. And who is the BEST person to go and talk to about your problems? Psychotherapist, of course!
Many people are skeptical of psychotherapists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, and other mental health healers. If you are one of them, « Freud » by Corinne Maier and Anne Simon is a graphic novel for you because it’s a perfect introduction into the life, theories, and historical context of one and only Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis.
I feel like these days Freud is having a hard time since many people are not agreeing with his theories, so I really appreciated the engaging and humorous approach to his life and work in this book. Corinne Maier managed to make complex concepts accessible to us mortals, showing how Freud was not only a pioneer and explorer of the mind but also a human like all of us. Without him, mental healing would not be the same.
The writing was magically enhanced by the unique, colorful, and psychedelic artwork of Anne Simon, which highlighted the humorous approach of this book. Vibrant color bring surreal atmosphere into Freud’s surroundings – Vienna becomes a fantastical place filled with monsters, bizzare people and unexplored locations filled with mystical artefacts. Whimsical face expressions and dynamic page layouts will keep you glued to this book!
Of course, this book oversimplifies Freud's theories (he wrote a massive amount of books, articles, and essays; it’s impossible to explain it all in 50 pages BD), but it’s a perfect introduction to see who Freud was, what he did, and to inspire you to start reading the source material.
I will try to get my hands on an English translation of one of his books and figure out why I’m so addicted to graphic novels…

I read Maier & Simon’s graphic take on Marx at the end of last year and I was really impressed with the balance of humour and historical background in that book. This is delivered to the same high standard. The art work is excellent, it’s quirky, playful and inventive and we get the basic elements on Freud’s background and life as well as an explanation of some of his key concepts like transference and the Oedipus complex. We also get a summary of some of his most familiar cases like “The Rat Man” and “Little Hans”. This was maybe a little too short, but still it was an enjoyable and informative read.

Обаятельная книжка про старика Фрейда: смешная, но не хохмаческая, с приветом иллиесовскому «1913» (здесь тоже есть сюжет о том, как Фрейд в Вене едва не встречается с молодым Гитлером). Обычно Фрейда совершенно незаслуженно демонизируют, тут, в противовес, скорее немного идеализируют — но это простительно.

Freud is a biographical graphic novel written by Corinne Maier and illustrated by Anne Simon. It chronicles the life of noted psychiatrist Sigmund Freud.
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.
Maier give a full account of Freud's life, as a boy Sigmund Freud dreamed of being an explorer, of discovering new lands and sailing the oceans. He continues his exploration spirit as an adult as he set out to map a far stranger territory – the human mind.
Freud is written and constructed moderately well. The book strikes a fine balance between informative storytelling, charming imagery, and witty dialogue to the point that even if you find psychoanalysis abhorrent or comic books a waste of time, it would still entertain readers. Simon's whimsical and vivid art is delightful and very metaphorical as Freud’s theories tend to be.

I've read and enjoyed the other two biographies by Maier so wanted to read this first one. It's unfair to dislike a book because of the subject when one chooses to read it but I just couldn't stand this. I can't understand why anyone would think Freud was a "genius". Nothing he said makes any sense and he's nuttier than any case he describes. I just rolled my eyes all the way through this.

This was pretty superficial - if you knew nothing about Freud, I don't know whether this would be more enlightening or confusing. I can't really figure out who it would be written for.
The occasional humor might be the closest it comes to a saving grace.

The art style here is so wacky and wild and really makes it flow. It is very short, but yeah since we don't take Freud too seriously anymore that's probably for the best!

Όταν χάνεσαι στο Ασυνείδητο
Στις 6 Μάη του 1856, στο λοκάλ Freiberg, της Αυστρίας ένα ζευγάρι Εβραίων μεταναστών φέρνουν στη ζωή το πρώτο από τα συνολικά 8 παιδιά τους. Η πληροφορία αυτή θα ήταν τουλάχιστον ανούσια εάν αυτό το παιδί δεν ήταν ο Sigmund Freud, ο άνθρωπος που άλλαξε για πάντα τον τρόπο που οι άνθρωποι βλέπουν τον εαυτό τους και, κατ’ επέκταση, τον κόσμο.
Η ζωή του Sigmund Freud είναι δεν είναι λιγότερο ενδιαφέρουσα από το τεράστιο έργο και ίσως, κοιτώντας την καλύτερα, μπορέσει κάποιος να διακρίνει διάφορα περιστατικά που αργότερα να έγιναν αφορμή για τις ιδέες του. Υπό αυτό λοιπόν το πρίσμα, οι εκδόσεις Πατάκη φέρνουν στα ελληνικά το ιδιαίτερο κόμικ «Φρόυντ: Μια Βιογραφία με Σκίτσα», σε σενάριο της γαλλίδας ψυχαναλύτριας Corinne Maier και σχέδιο της Anne Simon.
Tι έχει λοιπόν να πει ο Freud τον 21ο αιώνα; Η απάντηση είναι πολλά, ειδικά μετά από τις δεκάδες παρανοήσεις που έχει δεχθεί ο κορμός της φροϋδικής σκέψης και η μετέπειτα αμερικανότροπη κυριαρχία του μπηχεβιορισμού, ο οποίος αντί να πεθάνει τη δεκαετία του 1950, βρήκε τον τρόπο να μολύνει και τις υπόλοιπες κοινωνικές επιστήμες με έναν πολύ επικίνδυνο βιολογισμό, ακροδεξιάς νοοτροπίας και πρακτικής.
Σε όλα αυτά η κατανόηση του ανθρώπινου ψυχισμού (και όχι πνεύματος όπως το αναφέρει η ανά σημεία προβληματική μετάφραση της ισλαμοφοβικής και αρκετά συχνά ένοχης για βιολογισμό Σώτης Τριανταφύλλου) είναι κομβική.
Η βιογραφία του Freud εστιάζει σε αυτό το σημείο, τη μετάδοση του τρόπου σκέψη τους Freud, προσπαθώντας να εικονοποιήσει με έναν ευφάνταστο τρόπο, μερικά από τα πιο διάσημα περιστατικά της ζωής του αυστριακού γιατρού, των συζητήσεων που είχε με άλλους γιατρούς/ ψυχαναλυτές αλλά και κάποια από τα πιο διάσημα περιστατικά που αντιμετώπισε, όπως ο άνθρωπος με τους αρουραίους ή ο μικρός Χάνς.
Η απεικόνιση της Anne Simon κερδίζει αμέσως την προσοχή του αναγνώστη, κυρίως χρησιμοποιώντας στο σχέδιο πολλά ψυχαναλυτικά στοιχεία, όπως η συνειρμική σκέψη, η μετάθεση, ο συμβολισμός και η γενικότερη «ονειρική» αντιμετώπιση της ζωής του Freud (αλλά και όλων μας). Ακόμα και η επιλογή του σκίτσου να δανειστεί πολλά στοιχεία από τη γελοιογραφία και την καρικατούρα εντάσσεται σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, της υποκειμενικής σύλληψης ενός προσώπου για το οποίο έχουμε επαρκή στοιχεία για το πως έδειχνε. Είναι και αυτό το στοιχεία που καθιστά το κόμικ κάτι πολύ παραπάνω από μια απλή βιογραφία ή εργογραφία. Ταυτόχρονα, τα σουρεαλιστικά σχέδια (ο Νταλί κάνει και ένα cameo προς το τέλος, τιμής ένεκεν) και τα αλλοπρόσαλλα χρώματα διάγουν τη «βασιλική οδό προς το ασυνείδητο» και μας καλούν να καταλάβουμε πολύ περισσότερο τον τρόπο σκέψης του Freud παρά διάφορες πληροφορίες.
Οι εν λόγω πληροφορίες ήταν δουλειά της Maier, η οποία ως φροϋδική ψυχαναλύτρια η ίδια της ήταν σχετικά πιο εύκολο να τις αποδώσει. Ήταν όμως; Ό Freud ήταν μια ιδιαίτερη προσωπικότητα, ενώ ακόμα και η διαδικασία σκέψης του ήταν με πολλά πισωγυρίσματα, επαναθεωρήσεις, επαναλήψεις (κανείς άλλωστε δεν ξεφεύγει από την επανάληψη) αλλά και με πολιτικές ελπίδες και απογοητεύσεις. Την αισιοδοξία ενός βιβλίου όπως «Το Μέλλον μιας Αυταπάτης» διαδέχεται η ηττοπάθεια του «Πολιτισμός Πηγή Δυστυχίας». Κατανοούμε λοιπόν πως δεν πρόκειται για μια ευθεία γραμμή. Αυτή η δυσκολία τελικά λυγίζει και τη Maier η οποία δεν καταφέρνει να αποδώσει συνεκτικά ούτε τη ζωή ούτε τη σκέψη ούτε και το έργο του πατέρα της ψυχανάλυσης, περιοριζόμενη σε τσιτάτα που δεν συνιστούν σε καμία περίπτωση ανάλυση ή εξιστόρηση.
Η συνειρμική δομή που δοκιμάστηκε και στο σενάριο δε βοηθά ούτε τον αμύητο να καταλάβει τι εστί ψυχανάλυση ούτε αυτόν που έχει μια ιδέα να την εμβαθύνει. Βέβαια το μικρό του μέγεθος, μόλις 50 σελίδες, δε θα μπορούσε να κάνει κάτι τέτοιο de facto. Όμως ίσως θα ήταν πιο δόκιμο να προσπαθήσει να περιοριστεί σε μια οπτική, είτε στο έργο, είτε στα περιστατικά είτε στις κατηγορίες.
Τελικά το «Φρόυντ: Μια Βιογραφία με Σκίτσα» μπορεί να έχει σκέρτσο και πνεύμα, όμως δεν αποδίδει την ψυχή της ψυχανάλυσης, κάτι που υπάρχει πραγματική ανάγκη να γίνει.

Η βιογραφία του Freud εστιάζει σε αυτό το σημείο, τη μετάδοση του τρόπου σκέψη τους Freud, προσπαθώντας να εικονοποιήσει με έναν ευφάνταστο τρόπο, μερικά από τα πιο διάσημα περιστατικά της ζωής του αυστριακού γιατρού, των συζητήσεων που είχε με άλλους γιατρούς/ ψυχαναλυτές αλλά και κάποια από τα πιο διάσημα περιστατικά που αντιμετώπισε, όπως ο άνθρωπος με τους αρουραίους ή ο μικρός Χάνς.
Η απεικόνιση της Anne Simon κερδίζει αμέσως την προσοχή του αναγνώστη, κυρίως χρησιμοποιώντας στο σχέδιο πολλά ψυχαναλυτικά στοιχεία, όπως η συνειρμική σκέψη, η μετάθεση, ο συμβολισμός και η γενικότερη «ονειρική» αντιμετώπιση της ζωής του Freud (αλλά και όλων μας). Ακόμα και η επιλογή του σκίτσου να δανειστεί πολλά στοιχεία από τη γελοιογραφία και την καρικατούρα εντάσσεται σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, της υποκειμενικής σύλληψης ενός προσώπου για το οποίο έχουμε επαρκή στοιχεία για το πως έδειχνε. Είναι και αυτό το στοιχεία που καθιστά το κόμικ κάτι πολύ παραπάνω από μια απλή βιογραφία ή εργογραφία. Ταυτόχρονα, τα σουρεαλιστικά σχέδια (ο Νταλί κάνει και ένα cameo προς το τέλος, τιμής ένεκεν) και τα αλλοπρόσαλλα χρώματα διάγουν τη «βασιλική οδό προς το ασυνείδητο» και μας καλούν να καταλάβουμε πολύ περισσότερο τον τρόπο σκέψης του Freud παρά διάφορες πληροφορίες.
Οι εν λόγω πληροφορίες ήταν δουλειά της Maier, η οποία ως φροϋδική ψυχαναλύτρια η ίδια της ήταν σχετικά πιο εύκολο να τις αποδώσει. Ήταν όμως; Ό Freud ήταν μια ιδιαίτερη προσωπικότητα, ενώ ακόμα και η διαδικασία σκέψης του ήταν με πολλά πισωγυρίσματα, επαναθεωρήσεις, επαναλήψεις (κανείς άλλωστε δεν ξεφεύγει από την επανάληψη) αλλά και με πολιτικές ελπίδες και απογοητεύσεις. Την αισιοδοξία ενός βιβλίου όπως «Το Μέλλον μιας Αυταπάτης» διαδέχεται η ηττοπάθεια του «Πολιτισμός Πηγή Δυστυχίας». Κατανοούμε λοιπόν πως δεν πρόκειται για μια ευθεία γραμμή. Αυτή η δυσκολία τελικά λυγίζει και τη Maier η οποία δεν καταφέρνει να αποδώσει συνεκτικά ούτε τη ζωή ούτε τη σκέψη ούτε και το έργο του πατέρα της ψυχανάλυσης, περιοριζόμενη σε τσιτάτα που δεν συνιστούν σε καμία περίπτωση ανάλυση ή εξιστόρηση.
Η συνειρμική δομή που δοκιμάστηκε και στο σενάριο δε βοηθά ούτε τον αμύητο να καταλάβει τι εστί ψυχανάλυση ούτε αυτόν που έχει μια ιδέα να την εμβαθύνει. Βέβαια το μικρό του μέγεθος, μόλις 50 σελίδες, δε θα μπορούσε να κάνει κάτι τέτοιο de facto. Όμως ίσως θα ήταν πιο δόκιμο να προσπαθήσει να περιοριστεί σε μια οπτική, είτε στο έργο, είτε στα περιστατικά είτε στις κατηγορίες.
Τελικά το «Φρόυντ: Μια Βιογραφία με Σκίτσα» μπορεί να έχει σκέρτσο και πνεύμα, όμως δεν αποδίδει την ψυχή της ψυχανάλυσης, κάτι που υπάρχει πραγματική ανάγκη να γίνει.

BD sympa, courte, facile à lire, accessible qui retrace la vie de Sigmund Freud à travers différents cas qu’il a pu étudier.
Permet de situer ses découvertes aux époques où elles ont été faites, ponctuées par ses rencontres avec les intellectuels viennois/autrichiens, les collègues qui le suivront - ou non… - dans la psychanalyse et la compréhension du cerveau humain, les artistes mais aussi les événements politiques tels que la montée du nazisme qui entraînera sa fuite en Angleterre où il mourra en 1939.
Je recommande.

Estaba muy emocionada esta lectura pero.... No me fascinó.
Es demasiado enredado, las ilustraciones son empalagosas y en realidad no me dejó una claridad (específicamente en la línea del tiempo) de la biografía de este personaje.
Todas sus ideas se tocan muy por encima....
Es un buen libro informativo para hacerse una idea muy general de la historia y pensamiento de Freud.
Es demasiado enredado, las ilustraciones son empalagosas y en realidad no me dejó una claridad (específicamente en la línea del tiempo) de la biografía de este personaje.

Pros: really interesting, playful art.
Cons: Even as someone who likes the dude, I felt really bored by this book. When I was talking about how it felt with my partner, we both agreed that it kind of felt like reading a realllllly long info graphic (though with better graphics). Just a list of facts vs. coherent whole that gives you a sense for the kind of dude he was.

2.75* Le style graphique et les planches sont très sympa mais alors niveau "scenar" c'est vraiment moyen. Que ce soit sur sa vie ou sur les divers cas de psychanalyse, tout est trop survolé.

Buenísimo en arte, color, dibujo y estilo.
Solo diría que está muy poco de la biografía, como tal si conoces los puntos importantes entiendes varias viñetas, sino solo parecen chistes o historias sin contexto. Pero, repito, está genial el libro.

É basicamente a história de Freud BEM resumida e ilustrada
Não me agradou muito pelo falta de coerência textual, da pra se perder facilmente se vc nao prestar total atenção, mas por ser bem curtinho da pra reler se ficar alguma duvida

The penultimate page shows Freud yelling at the TV about how the 21st century needs him... it was the end of the book and yet I wasn't really sure why it does?
