Diwali (lit. "row of lights") is the Hindu New Year and celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs alike. It commemorates how Prince Rama fought an evil king who had kidnapped his wife Sita. People lined the roads with oil lamps (known as diyas) to light the way for Rama and Sita.
Diwali (also known as Tihar in Nepal) takes place in October or November. Though in North America and Europe Diwali is only celebrated for one day, in India the celebrations last for five days. During Diwali, houses are decorated, people exchange presents (especially kids) and some visit temples.
