Nonfiction for early readers. This book gives a general run down of Christmas and how it is celebrated. It does include some traditions from around the world, but mostly focuses on traditions common in the United States. It briefly mentions the birth of Jesus, as well as attending church services, but it is more focused on the secular celebrations.
Just a very simple overview of the Christmas holiday. I like how she brought the religious origins and traditions into the book, rather than just focusing on the secular aspects of the holiday.
[Series Review] The titles in Scholastic’s Rooking Read-About Holidays series each introduce a different celebratin with crisp color photos and illustrations and large type. The origin and history of the holiday is detailed along with explanations of traditional foods, sights, and sounds. Each title contains just enough information to maintain the interest of 1st and 2nd grade readers and provides a useful resource for holiday units. Christmas is a disappointing entry, however; it mentions the birth of Christ only in light of historical tradition and treats the holiday as purely secular, with no explanation of the day’s religious significance.
A simple but not really inspired book about the traditions of Christmas. The format and pictures are appealing. There is also a pictorial glossary and index, which make it a useful for teaching these parts of the book to younger readers.
