Mein letzter Urlaub war in Vietnam. Und eigentlich würde es sich gehören, mal etwas von einem vietnamesischen Autor zu lesen. Dann fand ich zufällig dieses Buch im Tauschhaus, immerhin von einer Frau geschrieben, die mit einem Vietnamesen verheiratet ist.

Die vierzehnjährige Lan arbeitet in einer Schuhfabrik. Kein leichtes Leben, nur eine Pause, Überstunden werden nicht bezahlt. Arbeitslohn pro Tag 19.000 Dong - 85 Cent. Und dann muss auch noch die elfjährige Schwester arbeiten. Lan arbeitet schließlich für den Vater des Chefs auf einer Schlangenfarm. Und dann kommt eine deutsche Inspektion, die prüfen soll, ob die Arbeitsbedingungen fair sind.

Klar, die Schuhe, die wir tragen und unsere Klamotten werden in Vietnam hergestellt. Aber darüber nachdenken und zum Kommunisten werden möchte man doch nicht. Vielleicht sollte man. – Andererseits, die fahren alle Motorrad und freuen sich auf ihr erstes Auto. Und das ist ja auch nicht richtig. Also lieber in der Blase bleiben und Bücher lesen, in denen junge Männer Schriftsteller werden wollen. Oder noch besser, in denen viktorianische verwöhnte Mädchen am Ende den aufstrebenden jungen Mann ehelichen dürfen, der ein Jahreseinkommen von 20.000 Pfund hat.

I remember reading this book when I was younger. It shocked me- So I decided to pick it up again and read it again as an adult and ....

It's a nice short and fast read. Because of that the story isn't bad but the characters aren't really developed because there is simply not enough time to develop them.

And the story seems kind of unfinished- it needed a chapter or two more to be really complete. It's still an interesting book about an interesting subject we don't talk about enough - but it's not the best YA book out there.

La thématique traite d'un sujet sensible qui nous concerne tous lorsque nous achetons nos vêtements ou des jeux et que nous lisons le fameux "Made in..." de l'étiquette. Cela nous semble parfois indirect, loin de nous et, du coup, cette lecture nous mène à réfléchir sur nos choix de consommation. Je le conseille vivement !

This was such an interesting fast read about a young girl in Vietnam. Her family is so poor that she has to work in a cruel shoe factory. Ther are unhumane working conditions and they hardly earn anything, but because of the money her younger sister has to start working there too. The book gave me insight in a topic i knew hardly anything about and i truly appreciate it.
