41 books132 followersFederico Andahazi is the son of Bela Andahazi, Hungarian poet and psychoanalyst, and Juana Merlín. During his adolescence, he began to read the classical Argentine and universal authors. He used to escape from school, that reflected the oppressive military dictatorship ruler, to meet with friends in bookstores and bars on Corrientes Avenue, emblematic place of Buenos Aires culture.
It was at this time when he began writing his first stories. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology (Universidad de Buenos Aires); he practiced the psychoanalysis a few years, while he was working on his short stories.
In 2008, Andahazi published his first book of nonfiction, Pecar como Dios manda, Sexual History of Argentines. The essay runs in an hypothesis through all his work: you cannot understand the history of a country if you don’t know the history of sex that gestured it.
With a prose that does not forget the novelist, the author conducted this first volume in an exhaustive investigation that starts from the original cultures and reaches the May Revolution.

Acum cîteva zile, am estimat romanul lui Andahazi prin steluțe și mă simt obligat să spun două cuvinte despre el. Sînt sigur că puțini l-au citit, au trecut 17 ani de la publicarea traducerii românești; 17 ani înseamnă aproape o eternitate. În presa culturală, a avut parte de o primire favorabilă. Îmi aduc aminte de recenzia binevoitoare a Simonei Sora din Dilema veche. Cartea i-a plăcut.
E vorba, firește, de un roman istoric. Protagonistul e medic, îl îngrijește pe Papa Paul al III-lea (care îl protejează) și e un spirit foarte curios: „Sîntem în Renaștere. Verbul ei este: a descoperi, descoperire. Speculația curată a priori și abuzul de silogisme sînt la scăpătat și lasă locul domniei nedeosebitoare a privirii. Mai exact, sîntem în primăvara privirii” (p.17). În alte cuvinte, anatomistul e un empirist, își ridică ochii din cărți (nu acolo e Adevărul căutat) și cercetează direct lucrurile.
Mateo Columb (își) pune o întrebare scandaloasă: există undeva pe / în trupul femeii un punct care, odată atins, o determină să se îndrăgostească nebunește de un bărbat față de care nu simte absolut nimic? Răspunsul nu e deloc evident, nu se află în tratatele scolasticilor, nici în enciclopediile celor vechi, impune, așadar, o minuțioasă investigație anatomică.
Prin urmare, cînd n-ai nici o șansă la inima unei domnițe, cum poți transforma indiferența, disprețul femeii iubite și divinizate (al curtezanei venețiene Mona Sofia, să spunem) în iubire față de nemernicul și pipernicitul care ești, rămas nebăgat în seamă? Prin poțiuni și filtre? Prin cuvîntări și elegii, precum ignoratul Catullus? Prin crize isterice de plîns? Sau cum? Direcția analizei trebuie modificată radical.
Mînat de un crez nobil, Mateo Columb va studia meticulos anatomia feminină. În fine, după ani și ani de cercetări, identifică „organul / cornul” care o transformă pînă și pe femeia cea mai rece într-o torță erotică, într-un rug amoros. Îl va numi poetic „Amor Veneris” (pp.141-142). Mitul a devenit realitate: „Toate femeile, fără nici o deosibire (sic!, VG), sînt la cheremul acestui organ anatomic” (p.142). Vai vouă, femei fără suflet, v-am ghicit secretul!
Ileana Scipione lucrează cu minuție fiecare frază a cărților pe care le traduce. Schimbă topica, arhaizează frazele uneori mai mult decît s-ar cuveni. Mă întreb dacă asta este soluția cea mai potrivită... Discuția nu-și are locul aici.
P. S. După cum știm cu toții, „Amor Veneris” nu există în felul în care-l descrie maestrul Mateo Columb. El este încă una dintre vechile iluzii ale bărbaților. Nu-i cu putință să strunești o femeie fără voia ei :)

The sixteenth century wasn’t named the Age of Exploration in vain… A great many great discoveries were made during this fabulous era… But they tried to keep one of those discoveries, a very stupendous one, a secret. And only now Federico Andahazi dares to reveal the major mystery.
And, of course, that fair breakthrough concerned the fair sex.
When the postmodern author decides to have a literary outing into the history, the result is usually not too complimentary for the historic science. But the book is usually a great fun to read. And so it is with The Anatomist – a tale of the grand anatomic discovery.
Even Sigmund Freud might be jealous.

In the Catalogo di tutte le puttane del bordello con il lor prezzo, her name appeared printed in bold letters and her price in even more remarkable numbers: 10 ducats. That is to say, six ducats more expensive than the legendary Lenna Grifa. In the catalog, carefully compiled and edited for discerning travelers, no mention was made of her eyes green as emeralds, nor of her nipples hard as almonds whose diameter and texture might be compared to the petals of a flower – if ever there were such petals of the diameter and texture of Mona Sofia's nipples. Nor did it make mention of her firm animal thighs, as if rounded on a lathe, nor of her voice like crackling wood. «Κάτοικος του Μπουένος Άιρες, ο Federico Andahazi γεννήθηκε το 1963. Τα διηγήματά του έχουν λάβει πολλά βραβεία και ο Ανατόμος είναι ο νικητής του περίφημου βραβείου Fortabat της Αργεντινής. Αυτό είναι το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα».
"Ω Αμερική μου, νέα μου γη!" Ο Ματέο Ρενάλντο Κολόμπο (ή ο Κολόμπος, για να του δώσουμε το αγγλικό του όνομα) μπορεί να έγραψε στο De re anatomica του, αλλά μάλλον ένας πένθιμος θρήνος, μια πικρή παρωδία των δικών του ατυχιών και συμφορών, σε σύγκριση με τον Γενουάτη συνονόματό του, τον Κρίστοφερ. Το ίδιο επώνυμο και, ίσως, η ίδια μοίρα. Αλλά δεν μοιράζονται κοινό αίμα και ο θάνατος του ενός συμβαίνει μόλις δέκα χρόνια μετά τη γέννηση του άλλου. Η Αμερική του Mateo είναι λιγότερο μακρινή και απείρως μικρότερη από αυτή του Christopher. στην πραγματικότητα, δεν είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερο από το κεφάλι ενός νυχιού. Η ανακάλυψη του ανατόμου της Αναγέννησης Ματέο Ρενάλντο Κολόμπο είναι η ευτυχία και η μακαριότητα, η απόλαυση, η χαρά, η δημιουργία, η ερωτική απόλυση, η σωματική δίψα της λαγνείας ηια την γυναικεία φύση που ποτέ δεν ήξερε το ρόλο της εκτός απο την παρουσία της και τις υπηρεσίες της μέσα στο σπιτι. Η υπηρεσιακές δραστηριότητες είχαν πάντα ως αποδεκτή τον άνδρα πρότυπη σε κάθε οικογένεια.
Ο ανατόμος υποστηρίζει ότι σύμφωνα με τον Αριστοτέλη το σπέρμα που εκρήγνυται απο την ανδρική κορύφωση είναι κάτι το μεταφυσικό, είναι η ψυχή της αϋλης ερωτικής μέθεξης.
Αντίθετα η γυναικεία πανοργασμική φρενίτιδα που αρχίζει να ανακαλύπτεται αρχικά απο την κλειτορίδα και κατόπιν απο τις υπόλοιπες ερεθιστικές πράξεις που θα συμβούν προς και απο αυτήν, η κλειτοριδική έκρηξη, ο οργασμός που παρέμεναν άγνωστα και αχαρτογράφητα μέρη στο γυναικείο σώμα μέχρι τον 16ο αιώνα, ή αν γινόταν ήταν περιστασιακά και συμπτωματικά, όλα αυτά τα γυναικεία και απόρρητα απολαυστικά σεξουαλικά παιχνίδια ήταν συνυφασμένα με κάθε υλική διάσταση στο νομοτελειακό πλαίσιο της φύσης.
Η ανακάλυψη του Mateo Colombo συμβαίνει ακριβώς όταν οι γυναίκες, των οποίων ο τόπος ήταν πάντα μέσα στο σπίτι, άρχισαν να κατακτούν, σταδιακά και διακριτικά, τον έξω κόσμο, αναδυόμενοι πίσω από τους τοίχους των μοναστηριών και των καταφυγίων, από τα πορνεία ή από τη ζεστή αλλά όχι λιγότερο μοναστική γλύκα του σπιτιού. . Ο Mateo Colombo (ήρθε η ώρα να το πω) ανακάλυψε αυτό που κάθε άντρας έχει ονειρευτεί κάποια στιγμή: το μαγικό κλειδί που ξεκλειδώνει τις καρδιές των γυναικών, το μυστικό που διέπει τη μυστηριώδη κινητήρια δύναμη της γυναικείας αγάπης. Αυτό που, από τις απαρχές της Ιστορίας, οι μάγοι και οι μάγισσες, οι σαμάνοι και οι αλχημιστές, επιδίωκαν με τη βοήθεια των παρασκευασμάτων, κάθε είδους βότανα ή μέσω της εύνοιας θεών ή δαιμόνων. αυτό που πάντα λαχταρούσε κάθε ερωτευμένος άντρας, όταν πληγώθηκε, από αγένεια, από το αντικείμενο των προβλημάτων και των θλίψεών του. Και επίσης, φυσικά, αυτό που ονειρεύονται οι βασιλιάδες και οι ηγεμόνες στην απόλυτη επιθυμία τους για παντοδυναμία: δηλαδή, το όργανο που υποτάσσει την ασταθή γυναικεία βούληση.

Ο Amor Veneris (αυτό είναι το όνομα που του έδωσε ο ανατόμος, «αν μου επιτραπεί να δώσω ένα όνομα στα πράγματα που ανακάλυψα») ήταν η αληθινή πηγή δύναμης πάνω στην ολισθηρή, σκιώδη ελεύθερη βούληση των γυναικών. Σίγουρα, μια τέτοια διαπίστωση είχε πολλές σοβαρές συνέπειες.
«Σε ποιες συμφορές δεν θα υποβαλλόταν ο Χριστιανισμός αν το γυναικείο αντικείμενο της αμαρτίας έπεφτε στα χέρια των δυνάμεων του Σατανά;» ρώτησαν οι σκανδαλισμένοι Γιατροί της Εκκλησίας.
«Τι θα γινόταν με την κερδοφόρα επιχείρηση της πορνείας αν κάποιος φτωχός καμπούρης μπορούσε να αποκτήσει την αγάπη της πιο ακριβής εταίρας;»
ρώτησαν οι πλούσιοι ιδιοκτήτες των υπέροχων βενετσιάνικων οίκων ανοχής. Και, το χειρότερο από όλα, τι θα συνέβαινε αν οι κόρες της Εύας ανακάλυπταν ότι, ανάμεσα στα πόδια τους, έφεραν τα κλειδιά και στον Παράδεισο και στην Κόλαση; Η ανακάλυψη της Αμερικής του Mateo Colombo ήταν, όλα τα θεωρούμε, ένα έπος που αντιπαρατέθηκε από μια ελεγεία. Ο Ματέο Κολόμπο ήταν τόσο άγριος και άκαρδος όσο ο Κρίστοφερ. Όπως ο Christopher (για να χρησιμοποιήσω μια κατάλληλη μεταφορά) ήταν ένας βάναυσος αποικιστής που διεκδίκησε για τον εαυτό του όλα τα δικαιώματα στην ανακαλυφθείσα γη, το γυναικείο σώμα.

Σχεδόν όλα αυτά που παραθέτω πιο πάνω είναι αποσπάσματα απο το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο. Σε πολύ μικρότερη κλίμακα αναλογικά, διατυπώνω ή σχολιάζω αυτά τα υπέροχα και συναρπαστικά που διάβασα στον «Ανατόμο».
Με συνεπήρε, με ενημέρωσε για τις εφευρέσεις στο γυναικείο σώμα τα χρόνια της αναγέννησης και του σκοταδισμού απο την ιερά εξέταση και την εκκλησία των διαχρονικά προδοτών και εκμεταλλευτών ιερέων, των φιλήδονων παιδαιραστών, αυτών που αφόριζαν τα πορνεία και μετέτρεπαν σε «μπουρδέλα» ορέξεων για κοσμικές απολαύσεις τον οίκο του θεού που υπηρετούσαν. Αυτοί οι «άγιοι άνθρωποι» πάντα στο όνομα του πανάγαθου πουλάνε παραδεισένια κομμάτια ουρανό για να αποκτήσουν οι ίδιοι αμύθητα πλούτη και ηδονές πάσης φύσεως επί γης.

Αυτό που, από τις απαρχές της Ιστορίας, οι μάγοι και οι μάγισσες, οι σαμάνοι και οι αλχημιστές, επιδίωκαν με τη βοήθεια των παρασκευασμάτων, κάθε είδους βότανα ή μέσω της εύνοιας θεών ή δαιμόνων. αυτό που πάντα λαχταρούσε κάθε ερωτευμένος άντρας, όταν πληγώθηκε, από αγένεια, από το αντικείμενο των προβλημάτων και των θλίψεών του. «Σε ποιες συμφορές δεν θα υποβαλλόταν ο Χριστιανισμός αν το γυναικείο αντικείμενο της αμαρτίας έπεφτε στα χέρια των δυνάμεων του Σατανά;» ρώτησαν οι σκανδαλισμένοι Γιατροί της Εκκλησίας.
«Τι θα γινόταν με την κερδοφόρα επιχείρηση της πορνείας αν κάποιος φτωχός καμπούρης μπορούσε να αποκτήσει την αγάπη της πιο ακριβής εταίρας;»
ρώτησαν οι πλούσιοι ιδιοκτήτες των υπέροχων βενετσιάνικων οίκων ανοχής. Και, το χειρότερο από όλα, τι θα συνέβαινε αν οι κόρες της Εύας ανακάλυπταν ότι, ανάμεσα στα πόδια τους, έφεραν τα κλειδιά και στον Παράδεισο και στην Κόλαση; Η ανακάλυψη της Αμερικής του Mateo Colombo ήταν, όλα τα θεωρούμε, ένα έπος που αντιπαρατέθηκε από μια ελεγεία. Ο Ματέο Κολόμπο ήταν τόσο άγριος και άκαρδος όσο ο Κρίστοφερ. Όπως ο Christopher (για να χρησιμοποιήσω μια κατάλληλη μεταφορά) ήταν ένας βάναυσος αποικιστής που διεκδίκησε για τον εαυτό του όλα τα δικαιώματα στην ανακαλυφθείσα γη, το γυναικείο σώμα.

Σχεδόν όλα αυτά που παραθέτω πιο πάνω είναι αποσπάσματα απο το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο. Σε πολύ μικρότερη κλίμακα αναλογικά, διατυπώνω ή σχολιάζω αυτά τα υπέροχα και συναρπαστικά που διάβασα στον «Ανατόμο».
Με συνεπήρε, με ενημέρωσε για τις εφευρέσεις στο γυναικείο σώμα τα χρόνια της αναγέννησης και του σκοταδισμού απο την ιερά εξέταση και την εκκλησία των διαχρονικά προδοτών και εκμεταλλευτών ιερέων, των φιλήδονων παιδαιραστών, αυτών που αφόριζαν τα πορνεία και μετέτρεπαν σε «μπουρδέλα» ορέξεων για κοσμικές απολαύσεις τον οίκο του θεού που υπηρετούσαν. Αυτοί οι «άγιοι άνθρωποι» πάντα στο όνομα του πανάγαθου πουλάνε παραδεισένια κομμάτια ουρανό για να αποκτήσουν οι ίδιοι αμύθητα πλούτη και ηδονές πάσης φύσεως επί γης.

Usando una expresión muy de mi círculo de amigos ¡este libro es una falta de respeto! Y no por malo, no juzguen mal, sino porque a veces resulta injusto que entre tanto libro malo solo unos pocos tengan la capacidad de escribir como lo hace este señor que debo decir, se me ha metido en el corazón como uno de mis escritores favoritos.
Como en Las Piadosas, El Anatomista (que fue antes) es una novela con descripciones fascinantes, usos del lenguaje muy originales, imágenes nuevas y personajes (¡qué personajes!) que le dan picante a las páginas: y no podrás evitar comértelas en menos de una semana.
Me gustó por diferente. Como novela histórica se sale del estereotipo de los ‘Dan Brownianos’ y le imprime los mejores elementos de quienes se dedican a escribir cuentos: personajes intrigantes y un final bellamente dibujado.

What a sexy. Twisted. Perverted. Mostly historical accurate book. There were several scenes in this book that will offend, titillate, and make you either laugh or want to throw up. I laughed, but I'm not a generally morally upright type of person.

Skaisti un poētiski uzrakstīts stāsts par 16.gs.Itāliju. Tas ir lielo atklājumu laikmeta sākums, tomēr par spīti apgaismībai, vēl spēcīgi ir Invizīcijas likumi. Būt par ārstu šajā laikā ir patiesi bīstama nodarbošanās.

El perfume feat El nombre de la rosa. Ambos libros en una versión más breve, pero poderosa. Una historia extraordinaria y atrapante, con el lenguaje preciso, que cuenta la historia de una obsesión por encontrar algo (como en la obra de Süskind) en un contexto histórico basado en hechos reales en los cuáles el poder de la Iglesia y las supersticiones de una época proporcionan un perfecto trasfondo (como en la obra de Eco). Quizás unas gotas de Memorial del convento también. Es increíble que no hayan hecho la película. Y aunque Mateo Colon, Inés de Torremolinos y Mona Sofía son grandes caracteres, el cuervo Leonardino, sin ser protagonista, me deja el recuerdo de una de las aves más interesantes que recuerde en un libro. Hubiera querido que este libro nunca termine pero eso es imposible. Es casi como si hubiera dicho: "Tu tiempo se acabó".

Me ha gustado mucho! Fácil de leer y corta ! Una novela histórica distinta, transcurre en el Renacimiento y nada menos que la historia nos cuenta la historia del anatomista que descubrió el clítoris. Bien escrita y con toques cómicos y eróticos bien combinados que me hicieron disfrutarla
Muy buena descripción de una época maravillosa como lo fue el Renacimiento. Los personajes están muy bien logrados y además muchos de ellos son bastante bizarros y eso lo hace aún más interesante.
Describe a la sociedad de su tiempo, hipocresías, desconocimiento y superstición . Así como también la misoginia, y la mentalidad de la época.
Describe la cosificación de la mujer, donde placer y herejía iban de la mano

A LESSON IN CLITERACY,
This novel explores the beginnings of Western medicine in acknowledging the existence of the only human organ devoted solely to pleasure. Of course, the full extent of the clit would not be mapped until much much later. But as far as historical-literary-medical-religious smut, this book is rather balanced. Tidy, even.
If you are of the opinion that authorial representation of moral degradation is at all a show of support, this is not the book for you.
But on the other hand, if the author's thesis (for all of his writings, not just this book) that "to understand the people of a country one must first understand the sort of sex that generated those folks" (paraphrasing) at all interests you, then you this book will intrigue you.
If you like your historical romances from the Italian Renaissance with a positive portrayal of the difficulties which women faced (ie, without the whoremongering and the religion), check out The Blind Contessa's New Machine.

"Es una creencia corriente de que la pérdida de la virtud es una consecuencia del apetito de verga; os afirmo que la segunda es un efecto de la primera".
Este libro pudo haber sido MUY bueno, pero quedó truncado. Hay dos personajes femeninos maravillosos que el autor desarrolló con bastante profundidad en la primera mitad para luego, plaf, acabarlos en las dos últimas hojas prácticamente. Siento como si a Andahazi se le hubiese acabado la tinta, el papel o la memoria del computador y por eso no pudo seguir profundizando en ambas mujeres y la relación o no-relación que ellas mantuvieron con el protagonista.
Quedó corto el autor. Yo, como editora, le hubiese exigido desarrollar e hilar más los personajes e historias para publicar el libro.

Mateo Colón, a Padovai Egyetem kirurgusa, Vesalius tanítványa és utóda a katedra élén, egyfelől az emberi test elkötelezett kutatója, reneszánsz gondolkodó és művész, másfelől a regény lapjain mint reménytelenül szerelmes férfi kel életre. Mateo Colón tehát a női szívekhez vezető kulcsot kereste, miközben orvos-anatómusi kíváncsisága odavezetett, hogy egy kulcsfontosságú női szerv működését sikerült feltérképeznie. Bizton állíthatjuk, hogy nem elsőként a emberiség ismert története során, viszont neki volt először kellő bátorsága, elszántsága és mindenekelőtt tudományos igénye, hogy tapasztalatait, majd az erre épülő - mellesleg igencsak megkérdőjelezhető - elméleteit papírra vesse. (A tárggyal egyébként csak a fent nevezett opusz XVI. fejezete foglalkozik, tudománytörténeti szempontból valószínűleg sokkal jelentősebbnek számítanak az értekezés egyéb részei, például a tüdő vérkeringésére vonatkozó, ténylegesen újkeletű észrevételek.)

Ez a regény a szexualitással foglalkozik, de nem erotikus. Ugyanakkor ténylegesen testközelbe hozza a korszak sajátos keresztény-reneszánsz miliőjét - egyetemi cellák, hullaházak, inkvizíciós perek, bordélyházak fullasztó légkörében követhetjük nyomon vallásfilozófia és élettudományok mai szemmel meghökkentő találkozását. Felicidades! Has desbloqueado una nueva forma de decir "pene".
Este libro me hizo mal. No lo quise terminar (avancé hasta un 38%) porque no quise darle mi tiempo a algo que me estaba haciendo sentir mal y me molestaba en todos los niveles. Lo comencé a leer como parte del club de lectura, pero honestamente no vale mi tiempo, y no quiero otro Ensayo sobre la ceguera. La única diferencia con Ensayo en cuanto a calificación es que Ensayo no atacó directamente mis principios sino más a mi buen gusto literario, con un estilo que rompió toda regla gramatical que pudo. En cambio este libro fue legible, pero el contenido no vale ni el papel donde se imprimió.
El autor parece como si quisiera esconder debajo de una narración clínica o analítica lo que realmente disfruta hablar: prostitución infantil, mutilaciones, abuso y violencia. No soy psicoanalista, pero no me hace falta serlo para saber que Andahazi tiene problemitas.
Además de eso el libro está escrito muy pretenciosamente. Y no lo digo sólamente por la forma sobradora de Andahazi de escribir. No está mal usar palabras poco comunes. Lo que está mal es buscar cada palabra en un diccionario de sinónimos y utilizar en cada caso la menos conocida para hacer sentir al lector una persona inculta e ignorante.
En fin. Mi calificación de 1 estrella no necesariamente es para disuadirte de leer este libro. Sacate las ganas si querés. Pero esta estrella representa mi opinión sobre este libro.

خلال قرائتي لهذه الرواية، شعرت وكأني جزء من الأحرف التي شكلتها، لقد كان لي مكان في كل فصل من فصولها وكرسي على كل سطر من سطورها.
فيديريكو أندهازي تفوق على نفسه بما قدمه لنا في هذه الرواية، اسلوبه في سرد الأحداث ووصفه للأماكن في إيطاليا من أفضل وأمتع الأساليب التي مررت بها في تجربة أدبية. الأماكن بانت لي حية تكسوها الحياة مع كل كلمة تصفها، حتى كادت رائحتها وملمسها تداعب حواسي، وسطوع الشمس على "فايا بوتشياري" و"كنيسة الثالوث المقدس" يحرقني.
لم أتوقع أن أقع في يوم من الأيام على رواية بهذه الدرجة من الغرابة والسخرية المتقنة الرفيعة، أكاد لا أستطيع حصر المواضيع التي ناقشها أندهازي من خلال شخصيات روايته.
هنالك جمل في الرواية تشعر وكأنها جمل رخامية ذات عروق متفرعة، كل عرق منها ينتهي بمقلع ما ويوصلك لنتيجة ما.
ولا استطيع اغفال الجانبين العلمي والفلسفي الكبيرن للرواية، عشرات الطروحات العلمية والفلسفية لأرسطو وابن سينا ويوليوس بولوكس وبريبوتيو ماتريسيس وأفلاطون وغيرهم الكثير الكثير.
رواية شاملة، متقنة، فنية، علمية، فلسفية، جمالية، سحرية. رواية للإشراق والصفاء الأكبر.

فيديريكو أندهازي تفوق على نفسه بما قدمه لنا في هذه الرواية، اسلوبه في سرد الأحداث ووصفه للأماكن في إيطاليا من أفضل وأمتع الأساليب التي مررت بها في تجربة أدبية. الأماكن بانت لي حية تكسوها الحياة مع كل كلمة تصفها، حتى كادت رائحتها وملمسها تداعب حواسي، وسطوع الشمس على "فايا بوتشياري" و"كنيسة الثالوث المقدس" يحرقني.
لم أتوقع أن أقع في يوم من الأيام على رواية بهذه الدرجة من الغرابة والسخرية المتقنة الرفيعة، أكاد لا أستطيع حصر المواضيع التي ناقشها أندهازي من خلال شخصيات روايته.
هنالك جمل في الرواية تشعر وكأنها جمل رخامية ذات عروق متفرعة، كل عرق منها ينتهي بمقلع ما ويوصلك لنتيجة ما.
ولا استطيع اغفال الجانبين العلمي والفلسفي الكبيرن للرواية، عشرات الطروحات العلمية والفلسفية لأرسطو وابن سينا ويوليوس بولوكس وبريبوتيو ماتريسيس وأفلاطون وغيرهم الكثير الكثير.
رواية شاملة، متقنة، فنية، علمية، فلسفية، جمالية، سحرية. رواية للإشراق والصفاء الأكبر.

After reading some of the reviews, I say "don't shoot the messenger". The author has obviously, very much so, written the book to expose the sexist, complicit attitude of the church and society regarding women firstly, and their sexuality, secondly. A really good account of attitudes then and reasonably well written. The characters are only symbolic of those that existed at the time. A good attempt at fictionalising the attitudes of the Renaissance and prior. Put modern day sensibilities away when you read this - it is not designed to be an official doctrine for women in today's climate. Instead a record of who women "were" which should make women rejoice about who we are now.

I'm certainly thankful I wasn't alive during the renaissance. Women were demonized if this tale is historically accurate. According to Matteo Realdo Columbo, the discoverer of the clitoris, women had no soul. They were temptresses of men, enticing them to partake of their lascivious ways. The root of all their maladies was the clitoris. Kinetic fluids which contain the soul become trapped in the clitoris. Proper stimulation is required to release women's souls and cure all that ails them. Such drivel.

This book was a small jewel of anatomical and historical reference. With intrigue and drama the author incases a brilliant treaty of 16th century philosophical/anatomical thought in a gripping love story. If you appreciate and are interested in the way anatomists thought during the 16th century then this is a book you will enjoy.

Matteo Realdo Colombo viveu na época renascentista e foi professor de anatomia e cirurgião na Universidade de Pádua. É autor da obra De re anatomica, na qual descreve a circulação pulmonar e faz referencia ao Amor Veneris, Vel Dulcedo Appelletur.

This novel is nicely done--deserving of more credit than many reviewers here have given it. It is in part a love story, in part an exploration of sexual repression and religious intolerance of science, in part a comic look at how men have historically been mystified by the female body (and, for that matter, by women). The linkage of clitoral stimulation to witchcraft seemed plausible to me as a 16th century viewpoint, and in any event was quite funny. In addition I thought it was tastefully erotic. This is a skillfully told tale; I'm surprised it doesn't have a wider audience.

Siempre me ha encantado el "surrealismo" de Andahazi, pero este libro lo hace ver tan real y se incorpora en el pensamiento del siglo XVIII de una forma tan creíble que me rompió los esquemas que conocía del autor, en ese sentido... porque su enganche con temas sexuales y su locura para narrarlos es fascinante. Además para mí tiene el plus de los años que duré para conseguirlo.

Eh, not a bad read. But my dedication failed before I reached the end. The trial dragged on too much, and the characters never really grab you. Also, Andahazi repeats himself too much and Andahazi repeats himself too much.

Tenía muchísimas expectativas (pues #clítoris) y la verdad es que al principio me gustó sí, por eso dos estrellas (y no una), pero a medida que avanza la historia no solamente se vuelve sinsentido sino que híper machista. Es muy gracioso porque de verdad queda muy explícita la línea de pensamiento misógina.

This was a book recommended by a guy* I only met once, but whom I instantly connected with over a short conversation on music (bossa nova, right before its re-emergence as a fad) and books. Apart from Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, which he claimed was better than Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, The Anatomist was another title he recommended. Dumaguete was still without a bookstore then, and trips to Manila were few and far between, so I doubted being able to get a copy. But as luck would have it, a copy was available on Bookmooch, a book sharing site I had recently joined. It's difficult to pigeonhole a book like The Anatomist. Its bawdiness reminds me of Chaucer's saucy, sexually exuberant cast of characters, but for that crow Leonardino--an anomaly in a book like this. But granted, it works (he's given corpse morsels for his efforts). It's also funny: “Venice suffered from a surplus of three things: noblemen, priests and pedophiles, and, of course, all possible combinations of these things.” And one's not likely to forget a visual like this: "Before swallowing her client's morsel, Laverda gargled with a sip of rancid wine which, since it had been blessed, had the property of guarding from contagious diseases and demonic possessions. The anatomist knew that this custom had its roots in superstition and did not think it would affect the success of his experiment. Laverda was a woman knowledgeable in the art of fellatio, a skill favored by the fact that she lacked every last tooth, so that her client's member could slide in with ease, undisturbed. The anatomist noticed immediately the first signs of the potion's effect: Laverda stopped her work, stood up and stared at the anatomist with exultant eyes and a sudden excitement that brought color to her old cheeks. Mateo Colombo felt his heart jump."

Something to ponder about for philosophers or theologians, however antiquated. Definitely not something modern day anatomists or doctors should emulate, believe nor regress into. It's quite sexist but the setting was centuries ago so that's a bit understandable.
Gives you a feeling of being a bit violated too since the protagonist is male. And it's interesting how prostitution is both a source of feminine power and shame at the same time.
Written well enough. I somehow just got lost in the philosophy talk.

De verdad que no esperaba un libro tan elegantemente escrito y de una historia tan vívida, coloquial y con tantos toques históricos. Ilustrado en las antiguas ciudades europeas, el autor construye una alegoría al cuerpo humano, en especial, el de la mujer. Se retrata de forma pausible como en los lejanos años de la inquisición cualquier descubrimiento era vetado por la iglesia y en peores ocasiones, atribuidos como herejes que se consumirian en hogueras.
