Brandon is working as an orderly in a medical institution which has been getting weirder by the day. Rumours are flying around about odd experiments and soldiers have taken over the place. When Brandon is offered a promotion and told he must first undergo a physical to make sure he is adequate for the job, his situation quickly turns into a nightmare and he finds out that the rumours aren’t quite as farfetched as he thought. Kavin is a royal elf who has been sent by his parents to the human world to investigate the disappearance of so many of his kind. To do so he infiltrates the institution that seems to be at the centre of it all and discovers his mate. However, before he can find a way to talk to him, Brandon is taken by Dr.Carson and he has to find a way to get him out of there and take him to his world to keep him safe.
I really enjoyed this new addition to the Dark Court series. How couldn’t I when it contained elves, parallel universes, drama in the elfin and human world, a mad scientist hoping to take over the world and, oh yes, mpreg? We got to reacquaint ourselves with old characters, were introduced to new ones and had a first row ticket to the developments going on between not only the humans and the elves but also the Seelie and Unseelie Courts.
The reason for why the humans the elves are taking as mates are compatible with them was interesting, even though I was still rather confused since I don’t think it was adequately explained and this happened a couple of times throughout the story. Such as when Brandon and Kavin were separated and the former didn't seem to be sure about his feelings or how Torin seemed so attracted to Brandon...
I’m also very curious about the two new mated couples; especially Torin, Kavin’s long lost brother, and his seemingly abused leannán Kenna and can't wait for the next book in the series. Hopefully some aspects of the story will be made clearer.
