What do you think?

About the author
Jean-Paul Sartre
1,138 books13.6k followersJean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic, considered a leading figure in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism. Sartre was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism (and phenomenology). His work has influenced sociology, critical theory, post-colonial theory, and literary studies. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature despite attempting to refuse it, saying that he always declined official honors and that "a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution."
Sartre held an open relationship with prominent feminist and fellow existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. Together, Sartre and de Beauvoir challenged the cultural and social assumptions and expectations of their upbringings, which they considered bourgeois, in both lifestyles and thought. The conflict between oppressive, spiritually destructive conformity (mauvaise foi, literally, 'bad faith') and an "authentic" way of "being" became the dominant theme of Sartre's early work, a theme embodied in his principal philosophical work Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant, 1943). Sartre's introduction to his philosophy is his work Existentialism Is a Humanism (L'existentialisme est un humanisme, 1946), originally presented as a lecture.

In this book-length essay, Sartre asks some fairly simple questions. 'What is writing?', 'Why write?', 'For whom does one write?' etc. Does he answer them? I mean, I guess.
The major idea to come from this essay is Sartre's distinction between prose and poetry. That prose is utilitarian and that the author is always mirrored in their prose. Prose is the author making you see things from their point of view. Poetry however is not like this, it is much closer to a painting, as the viewer instead looks at a poem and gives their own interpretation. Therefore prose has the far greater revolutionary benefit.
Which, well, just isn't true is it? I suppose Sartre was unfortunate to have written this in 1948. Perhaps back then it was possible to assert such dichotomy between the political usage of prose and poetry, but surely just a couple of years later was Sartre not proven wrong by the Beats and the New York School?
There are some snippets I enjoyed in here. Like Sartre's rage against so-called 'poetic prose' in which the message of the text seems to be lost between the pages of the author's thesaurus (which is very similar to what Orwell writes in his 'Politics and the English Language').
Also the essay's final line, 'Of course, all of this is not very important. The world can very well do without literature. But it can do without man still better.' The line is almost laughably Sartrean, which is why I enjoy it so much.
I wouldn't call What is Literature? essential Sartre. But I am pleased to have read it. As is often the case with Jean-Paul, it is nice to have his ideas floating about you but just within touching distance. There is a danger in getting too close.

Marxist philosophy of art in the twentieth century was marked by what we might call the commitment controversy. On the one hand, partisans of committed art like Bertolt Brecht and Walter Benjamin argued that art had to be made into the vehicle of political messaging. On the other, defenders of autonomous art like Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer insisted that the revolutionary potential of art lay precisely in its resistance to the kind of instrumentalization that Brecht and Benjamin wished to impose upon it. For them, authentic artistic creation could bend to no other expectations than the inner logic of the work of art itself.
Qu’est-ce que la littérature? (1947) represents Sartre’s contribution to this debate. Its thesis is that the very essence of literature is such not only as to permit, but to demand commitment on the part of the author. Sartre begins by elaborating a theory of prose. In his view, writing is essentially an act of disclosure in Heidegger’s sense. Because the work of prose is composed of signs, not of objects, it reveals the world in a certain light and so presents it as demanding one kind of action or another. Unlike the painter, the sculptor, or the poet, the writer can always be asked: “To what end do you write?” That is, “What reality do you seek to disclose?”
Sartre goes on to articulate what we might call a phenomenology of the literary object. The activity of the writer, he maintains, implies that of the reader as its necessary correlate. Thus, every work of literature is a solicitation. Writing is an act of trust in the freedom of the reader to collaborate in the production of the literary object. There is thus a relation of mutual trust and generosity between author and reader, one that illuminates the question “Why write?”. One writes so that author and reader may, by their mutual expectations, reappropriate the world for themselves—that is, cast light on it as a project calling for human freedom.
Stimulating and original as Sartre’s analysis may be, the conception of commitment he ends up with is astoundingly thin. To say that the writer ought to be committed is, for him, nothing else but to say that he must recognize the impossibility for him not to pick a side. And here we see the kind of dead-end typical of Sartre’s though. Having stripped ethics of its foundation, he is left upholding freedom itself as the only value, i.e., the freedom to pick a side. For all his moralizing talk, he has in fact robbed himself of the tools to say which side we should pick: Whether we throw in our lot with fascists or die fighting them is, on his own premises, strictly arbitrary.

Yes impressive. I tend to struggle with Sartre ... even the name .. shouldn’t it be spelt Satre? Anyway I digress. The book is about literature as the name suggests but its also about the culture of literature, about the power of literature, what writing is, why we should write, for who people write and the situation of the writer around 1947 which is the year that this book was written. I love books about books so a book about the study of literature and the power that it can have is right up my street. The book started talking a little about politics in places which I’m sorry to say that i find a little bit boring (communist vs. bourgeoisie writing etc) but apart from this is was a solid upper end of the 4 star spectrum. It’s one of the easiest to read of Sartre’s books but even then in places I had no clue what the dude was going on about in places. Anyway – here are my favourite bits blad:
• In prose words are significative; they describe men and objects. In poetry, words are ends in themselves.
• Literature should not be a sedative but an irritant, a catalyst provoking men to change the world in which they live and in so doing to change themselves.
• His historical perspective suggested that art for art’s sake was a diversionary manoeuvre patronised by the bourgeoisie who preferred to hear themselves denounced as philistines rather than as exploiters.
• Here Sartre echoed Marx; the philosophers had only interpreted the world whereas the point was to change it.
• Culture saves nothing and nobody, nor does it justify. But it is a product of man. He projects himself through it and recognises himself in it; the critical mirror alone shows him his image.
• For the artist the colour, the bouquet, the tinkling of the spoon on a saucer are things in the highest degree.
• The speaker is in a situation in language. He is invested with words. They are prolongations of his meanings, his pincers, his antennae, his spectacles. He manoeuvres them from within, he feels them as though they were his body. He is surrounded by a verbal body which he is hardly aware of and which extends his action upon the world. The poet is outside language. He sees words inside out as if he does not share the human condition .. he discovers in words a slight luminosity of their own and particular affinities with the earth, the sky, the water and all things created.
• Genius is only great patience
• In reading one foresees, one waits, one foresees the end of the sentence, the following sentence, the next page. One waits for them to confirm or disappoint ones foresight. The reading is composed of a host of hypotheses.
• Reading is a free dream
• For this is quite the final goal of art; to recover this world by giving it to be seen as it is but as if it had its source in human freedom.
• It has often been observed that an object in a story does not derive its density of existence from the number and length of descriptions devoted to it, but form the complexity of its connections with the different characters. The more often the characters handle it, take it up, and put it down, in short go beyond it towards their own ends, the more real it will appear.
• To the young people of today who are tired of literature, to prove to them that a novel can also be an act.
• A work of art is never finished until it has become a collective representation and then it contains but virtue of all that generations of readers have put into it infinitely more than at the moment of conception.
• We hope that our books remain in the air all by themselves and that their words instead of pointing backwards towards the one who has designed them will be toboggans, forgotten, unnoticed, and solitary, which will hurl readers into the midst of a universe where there are no witnesses; in short that our books may exist in the manner of things, of plants, of events, and not at first like products of men. We should no longer I believe define beauty by the form or even the matter but by the density of being.
• Of course the book is still the heavy infantry which clears and occupies the terrain. But literature has its aeroplanes, its V1s, its V2s which go a great distance upsetting and harassing without bringing about the actual decision.

YouTube kanalımda Edebiyat Nedir? kitabının da içinde bulunduğu kitaplık turu videomu izleyebilirsiniz: https://youtu.be/yf0me602lnY
Sartre bu kitabında 3 soruyu cevaplamaya çalışır.
Yazmak nedir?

Single Quote Review:
The world can very well do without literature. But it can do without man still better.

“Whether the world is mind or matter, whether God exists or whether He does not exist, whether the judgement of the centuries to come is favorable to you or hostile, nothing will ever prevent your having passionately loved that painting, that cause, that woman, nor that love's having been lived from day to day; lived, willed, undertaken; nor your being completely committed to it. A book has its absolute truth within the age. It is lived like an outbreak, like a famine. With much less intensity, to be sure, and by fewer people, but in the same way. It is an emanation of intersubjectivity, a living bond of rage, hatred or love among those who produce it and those who receive it. If it succeeds in commanding attention, thousands of people reject it and deny it: as everybody knows, to read a book is to re-write it.”
An existentialist, broadly Marxist examination of the nature of prose, its distinction from poetry, the act of reading, and the relationship between the writer and the reader.

Like most other people, I first read Sartre early in my time at college- Nausea, Being & Nothingness, Words. And I was, of course, smitten by this man who understood so well my experience of isolation, freedom and how irritating it is when tools don't work properly. And then, like (I hope) most other people (including, it must be said, Sartre), I got over it, realized that the world existed neither to irritate me nor to coddle me, and that there were more important things than the state of my Existence.
So I didn't exactly have high expectations of this, and was very pleasantly surprised. Sartre's argument is based on a pretty dodgy philosophy, but quite valid feelings: anger at injustice, love of literature. Like most philosophies of literature, he makes absurd and stupid generalizations (the poet 'considers words as things, not signs' and so isn't like a 'writer'), but at least his largest generalization isn't an insult to human beings: the act of writing, he argues, is an act of freedom addressed to other free humans who happen at present to be in terrible situations of unfreedom. The relation between writer and reader can be an ideal image of a world in which people aren't forced to work in jobs they hate, or do anything else they hate for that matter. I'll take that over 'the act of writing is the putting into question of literature' any day. "The work of art, from whichever side you approach it, is an act of confidence in the freedom of men." And, I assume, women.
The writer is addressing both a real public - the people who do actually read her - and a virtual public, the people who could conceivably read her. In different historical periods these two audiences will more or less match up: when the society is one of minimal freedom for most people (Sartre's example is the 17th century), the virtual audience is more or less absent; when the society has the potential for greater freedom, the virtual audience expands (e.g., modernity.) But in any case, the writer must address her 'virtual' public through her real one. Abstract palaver has no place in Sartre's theory.
He follows this up with a great history of 20th century literature in France, which is basically a critique of surrealism and the communist party (it's important to note the latter, since everyone - including myself up till now - seems to think Sartre was a Stalinist), and the last chapter is a rousing call for writers to care about what they do.

This is a very interesting book that could use some heavy editing. Sartre offers the most lucid drawing of bourgeois contradiction and rationale that I've read among his contemporaries and especially his compatriots, and the third chapter of this book is something that really changed my perspective of literature as both a consumer and a producer of it. But since it is – intentionally, declared explicitly – a book written for a reader "in loco," that is, a reader who's held in the context in which Sartre has written it, since it is a book meant to be read by a certain kind of reader, it is not a very generous book for anyone lacking reference from its context. If you're not reasonably knowledgeable in French literature and European history, you will be either skipping mountains of pages or constantly interrupted by the need to do research. It's not a book for a complete novice.
And though it is exciting and provoking, it falls into circular motions so often. Sartre is so keen on making sure every single one of his points is thoroughly explained to the minimum detail that he becomes self-scrutinizing: the book itself is an answer to criticism towards his work, and it is often an answer to the criticism he already predicts the book will gather. In sum, he covers his bases too much, which removes a lot of what makes this book interesting: its bite. Ironically, he claims that the engaged writer should fight against academicism, but the rumination of his ideas is, at least to me, one of the biggest marks of academicism.
I'd give it three stars due to all I've mentioned, but I added another star because of chapter three, which really moved me and will stay with me forever.

This 1947 essay was fun to read, written with very lively force. As for its content, it's a long argument about the nature and purposes (these two being inseparable) of prose writing, entwined with a Marxist history of French literature (and, in passing, a critique of how the Communist Party is anti-revolutionary and against socialist interests). In the second chapter, Sartre rises into very abstract philosophical realms, but it's crucial to understanding the entire book to know what he means about literature being an "appeal to the liberty of the reader". His high ideals sometimes lead him into assertions that he has to backtrack on, such as that there has never been a good novel written whose author supports slavery or oppression (he admits elsewhere that some novels written by oppressors have been at least pretty good). In any case, he asserts that if a writer is not fully committed to both political and more importantly economic liberty in the socialist sense, he is internally at war with the fundamental free nature of literature. One thing that I found interesting was the observation between the form and the social background of 19th century novels: a closed ideology and a fully-analyzed, wrapped up form whose narrator is always commenting on the characters and putting everything into the form of an understood past incident. It was worth reading the whole thing to get to the last 20 or 30 pages where he talks about the literature he intends to write; it's inspiring, I think, even for those who don't share his point of view. Mind you, he thought that literature would die if the socialist revolution didn't arrive soon. I don't think that literature is dead now; but it's a remarkable achievement that Sartre's essay is still readable.

Pourquoi écrit - on ?

This is truly amazing!
I thought that this book would be some kind of a textbook, providing types of literature and ways to read literature properly and so on! But, fortunately, it turned out to be something totally different - totally better!
This book is sheer beauty! It is a masterpiece.
It doesn’t provide you with any formal procedures in order to understand literature, but it gives literature a breath of life and lets readers come face to face with it. Then, the book asks you to form your unique understanding and view of literature.
By answering the three main questions: “What is writing?”, “Why write?” and “For whom does one write?” Sartre creates a magnificent work of art, drawing a magical portrait of literature to pave the way in front of its readers enabling them to create their own different perspectives of literature.
Sartre’s neutrality and creativeness made the book a work of genius.
I highly recommend this book.

November 25, 2014What Is Literature? (Qu’est ce que la littérature?) by Jean-Paul Sartre has also been published as Literature and Existentialism. It is a collection of freestanding essays originally published in the French literary journals Les Temps Modernes, Situations I and Situations II. Jean-Paul Sartre is best known as the French philosopher who played a key part in the schools of existentialism and phenomenology. It is sometimes forgotten that he was also a literary critic and a Marxist who was often vocal about the abuses of human rights by the Soviet Union.
The reason I mention that Jean-Paul Sartre was a Marxist is because this plays a big part of What Is Literature? To understand his political standing is useful because it plays an important role in his literary criticism; Sartre was very vocal political, and though he embraced Marxism he never joined the communist party. While his literary criticism is always focused on Marxism, his schools of thought in philosophy are relevant, as well as his views on sociology and post-colonialism.
There are four essays found within What Is Literature? “What is Writing?”, “Why Write?”, “For Whom Does One Write?” and “Situation of the Writer in 1947”. “What is Writing?” is probably the most fascinating (for me, anyway) of the four essays, exploring the ideas of writing that distinguish it as an art form apart from poetry, painting and music. I found it interesting how Sartre has separated poetry and journalism out of his thoughts of writing to focus on literature as an art form. Whether you believe his idea of not, Jean-Paul Sartre will give you plenty of food for thought and I have to admit that a sufficient amount of it went over my head.
Jean-Paul Sartre has spent a great deal of time thinking about literature and writing as an art and philosophical idea, more than I could ever imagine. Because of this, it can be difficult and as a reader I had to admit that I wouldn’t understand everything. What Is Literature? did however leave me with plenty to think about and offer me a fresh perspective and that is all I wanted from this book. Let’s face it, this is a pretty pretentious book to read but I still think it is worth exploring the ideas within What Is Literature?
