Roxanne Mathis isn't like everyone else. Not only can she see auras and spectral entities, she can mix herbs and roots for spells to do good or ill. She can even light a candle without the benefit of a match. But when she’s hired to exorcise a demon from a young girl, she discovers the limits of her powers.
With her vampire cousin at her side and a sexy sorcerer chasing her on the rebound, Roxie sets out to send that evil entity back to where she came from.
Nothing is as it seems and Roxie’s in over her head. It’s not going to be enough for her to just be a paranormal investigator and old school root worker – to defeat this demon, she’s going to have to be the Mojo Queen.
Sonya Clark discovered she was a writer at the age of thirteen. Ray Bradbury whispered it to her through the pages of his books. The Vampire Lestat encouraged this lunacy in florid fashion, and Pennywise the Clown muttered dire warnings of what would happen should she neglect her calling. It took many years – many, like, a lot, yo – for her to figure out how to actually finish a manuscript. Once she unlocked that mystery, there was no turning back.
Sonya writes a few different flavors of romance – paranormal, sci-fi, and contemporary. She loves music, has a weird thing for the abstract art of Wassily Kandinsky, and a long-standing obsession with Robert Johnson that will one day result in a blues-themed novel. She lives with her husband and daughter in Tennessee.
Mojo Queen is both about paranormal investigator Roxanne Mathis, who just so happens to be a practicing witch. Often aided and abetted by her ancestor, vampire Daniel, Roxie spends Mojo Queen doing battle with a demon summoned into a young woman. She's both frustrated and tempted by Blake the Sexy Sorceror, a devillish young man with a penchant for chaos magic.
I don't normally read paranormal romance but these books are closer to urban fantasy, and there's enough of the cool energy-blasting and ghost busting to make me rather keen for the next instalment, Hoodoo Woman. Roxie is a strong and independent heroine, with a taste for the blues and a capable streak that made me warm to her pretty much instantaneously, and Daniel is one of the coolest vampires I've come across in a very long time. Even though Blake is by turns an arrogant so-and-so and a dangerous man, he's also Very Sexy and the type of hero someone as strong as Roxie needs. He doesn't save the day, just lends a hand when she needs it.
I think a lot of books related to witchcraft could suffer in the wake of movies like The Craft, or TV shows like Buffy, and it's nice that the female protagonist is granted power of her own, to do with as she will. Roxie chooses to use it to help people, by clearing houses of unwanted spirits, rather than using her power for personal gain. There is little in the way of religion here, as Roxie forges a strong bond with the natural world, and she's such a positive, normal character that I couldn't help but like her.
After reading some of Sonya's Friday flashes on her blog, thought I'd give Mojo Queen a go. I read it in a matter of days! Sonya writes in such a way that it's nigh-on impossible to put her books down, and her world-building is incredible - it feels both painfully real, and delightfully otherworldly at the same time. Roxie has a clear, straightforward narrative voice, and she's very easy to root for. The combination of the supernatural and other cultures makes for interesting reading, and I keep wanting to look up all of these other forms of practice for extra reading.
Positively magical! Roxanne Mathis, a witch and paranormal investigator, is the voice in this outstanding tale. A particularly conniving and sneaky entity has been called forth; beckoned through a ritual that badly misfired, by a lonely, driven sorcerer. Unfortunately, promises mean nothing once the demon enters the physical plane. A life is destroyed, and several others are threatened. Roxie struggles to unravel the mystery of the hellish beast so that it may be cast out, but she has never before been pitted against an evil of this caliber.
I was almost immediately engaged and caught up in the events of the story. Roxie led the casting parade, but she is supported by an impressive assortment of helpful backup companions. The writing sparkles with wit and humor. On several occasions I caught myself laughing aloud. There were times when I back-tracked to re-read and highlight a particularly funny passage. Here is just one example I loved. Roxie needs her “cousin”, a vampire no less, to defend the home front. He wants to come with her. So, she says to him “This is not the time to Scooby up and ride along.” That kind of expressive imagery really appeals to me, and this book is liberally sprinkled with similar instances of such delightfully cracked, ingenious phrases. If you enjoy paranormals with heaping dollops of mystery, suspense, danger, lust, and humor then this book should certainly be right up your alley.
Sometimes I just have to question my sanity – I downloaded Mojo Queen by Sonya Clark right after it was released. After having read the description, I knew it would be something I’d enjoy…then life intruded and my reading time went out the window. Once I finally caught my breath again, I picked it back up and never stopped to put it back down – WOW! This book made me late for everything, kept me up way past my bedtime and made me miss my own deadlines by a country mile.
Well crafted, well written and well edited by the mistress of darkness herself Nerine Dorman – Ms. Clark has created characters that I actually gave a damn about and put them in a story that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I was pleasantly surprised at the vast stores of knowledge the author has about the metaphysical arts, particularly her expertise in the fields of herbs and hoodoo – this lady knows her stuff! The main characters of Roxanne the feisty heroine, Blake the dark, tortured sorcerer, and Daniel the vampire are people you’ll end up rooting for. The bad guys are SERIOUSLY bad guys that ruined a perfectly good manicure with me gnawing my nails with anxiety.
I’m not going to give you a synopsis – part of the fun in this book is not knowing where it’s going before you get there. Ms. Clark surprised me time after time; just when I thought I had it figured out, she took me someplace new, making me gasp one minute and laugh out loud the next. I can’t recommend this book enough, and you can be certain I’ll be first in line for the next one.
A different kind of supernatural novel. In a market full of vampires and werewolves, it was very refreshing to read about a demon possession. Okay, there was a vampire, but not the typical vampire character. The depth of his (non-romantic)relationship with the protagonist added a wonderful dimension to the story. The main character, Roxie, is very real, and thus, very interesting. She isn't a badass full of martial arts moves. She's bookish and even a bit nerdy, right down to the glasses. But that's what makes her so cool. She's smart. She works hard and has every day worries like how to pay her bills, all the while dealing with unhappy ghosts, and one extremely nasty demon posessed young woman. I was very interested in Roxie, especially the depth of her magical talents, which she has yet to explore. I didn't want to stop reading, even when it was over. I hope another part of Roxie's story comes along soon.
When I offered to review this book, the author told me it might not be my type of thing. I’d read the blurb, seen it was PNR and told her I’d give it a go. I’m really glad I did because I enjoyed the hell out of this book. It’s dark, sexy and a little bit twisted – I recommend it wholeheartedly.
This book tells the story of Roxanne Mathis, a witch with unusual powers. She can read aura’s of the living, see ghosts and spirits, mix roots and herbs to make some powerful spells and has been known to do the occasional exorcism. Roxie isn’t daft; she also uses her powers to make money as a Paranormal Investigator along with her handy side-kick, and vampire relative, Daniel. In the main story, Roxie is hired to exorcise a Demon from the body of a young girl by a college student called Gabe. Seems that a local friendly sorcerer had persuaded Gabe and his friends into doing a little black magic, and the result of this had been both tragic and dangerous. Upon meeting the Demon, Roxie can tell that this will take more power than she is used to using. This isn’t a case of a simple demonic possession; the demon is seemingly resistance to all of Roxie’s current knowledge. To vanquish this being, Roxie has to tap into powers that she isn’t used to using, but this Demon cannot be allowed to stay on the mortal plane. After further digging, it seems that the Demon has to kill all the members of the summoning Pentagram to become a permanent, homicidal member of the American community. She killed one after entry, so Roxie and Daniel have three more to find, including the instigator of the whole situation, a sorcerer by the name of Blake. After a chance meeting at an underground leads to him breaking into her office, Blake turns out to be even more of a problem than she originally thought. Instantly attracted to the very dangerous sorcerer, Roxie finds herself unable to say no when he hires her to track down his “demon lover”. She has to find her anyway to exorcise her from Gabe’s girlfriend, so it isn’t a problem working for him....right?
This book is written entirely in first person but I liked the character of Roxie, so it wasn’t a problem having her voice in my head. Roxie is a woman who is used to being different. She’s sensible, strong willed and quite funny in parts. I really enjoyed reading about her discovery and subsequent development of her powers. I enjoyed that she was a strong woman who didn’t border on the massive bitch subset of character. Her relationship with Daniel, her ancestor, is lovely to read. She doesn’t have many friends, but he has always been there for her and so she classes him at the top of her list. The banter between them is comfortable and fun to read. However, I was a little disappointed with Daniels involvement in the book. He had the potential to being brilliant character; an ancient vampire paranormal investigator who loves making blood cocktails and can be always found protecting Roxie from harm, what’s not to love? Unfortunately, I felt that he was underused in this book. I hope he features in the second book, and that we get to know him better, as I really was intrigued with him. Roxie and Daniels relationship was put onto the backburner because of the authors focus on the one between Roxie and Blake; I didn’t mind this, but need more Daniel! I did enjoy the way he was used when the demon started to fight back, and attacked all of our good guys at once. The vampire mythology is often romanticised, but I felt that, although Daniel was definitely a “good” vampire, the author did a good job of showing that some things would simply be nature, not choice.
Now, onto the contentious point. Blake is hot. Blake is out of this world sexy with a bad boy charm that will draw me from a mile away. I love books where the love interest is a bad boy. However, my lust for Blake never turned into love, because I’m not sure he’s a redeemable bad-boy. When we meet Blake, it’s obvious he is up shit creek without a paddle. He has allowed a demon to convince him to get her a body, without ever realising the consequence of said actions. As a direct consequence of his actions, people are dead and others are in danger. Behind the bad-boy attitude, we do see glimpses of vulnerability, glimpses of regret for his actions. Nevertheless, the majority the time what we do see is an unapologetic cocky git. He doesn’t practice black magic or white magic; he practices magic that serves his purpose. He enjoys doing bad things, relishes them even, just because this one went a little OTT does not mean that he wants to change his ways; it just means he wants to clean up this mess so he can get back to business as usual. This is my major problem with him; he has no intention of reforming and I can’t fully accept a hero like that. Roxie and Blake are attracted to each other from the second they lay eyes on each other. Neither want to be nor do they want to give into it. She sees just what a selfish and irresponsible man he is. He allowed himself to be seduced by a female demon and, after she got a body and killed people, found himself sleeping with said demon. He doesn’t want the complication of being attracted to a woman as powerful as Roxie, especially as the potential of the power they would share would be immense. I do love them together though. They are a simmering mess of sexual tension, complicated feelings and immense power. They both have a common goal in defeating the demon, even if it is for different reasons, and this makes for some very entertaining reading. I love them as a couple; it’s just Blake as a person with which I have the problem.
This book is dark and sexy. The sexual tension between the leads simmers throughout the book, and I had a real love/hate relationship with Blake. The action really rockets when the Demon decides to start fighting back, and this has some very dark consequences for all the characters involved. I did feel some of the scenes were a lot of “telling” rather than “showing” but it wasn’t a massive issue and didn’t hinder my enjoyment of this tale. Well worth a read...
I was supplied with this copy by the publisher but as always on the basis that my opinion is honestly held and not influenced by whether the book was free or paid for. Integrity of reviewers is important to me, and false reviews do no favours to authors or readers. I started this series by getting the terrific Red House to review – that’s the follow on book to this one. I loved it so much Sonya kindly gave me Mojo queen so I could start the series from the beginning ( and I'm hoping Sonya is busily writing more of Roxie and Blake. It was good to see the beginning of Roxie’s adventures and how she meets up with Blake. She a very talented witch using many different forms of magic but always with the ethos of “do no harm”. He's a sorceror, definitely yummy and sexy but with an ambitious dark side that’s led him to become involved in demon summoning – unfortunately demons lie...as Blake finds out to his cost and Roxie gets hired to help despatch this particularly nasty one back before she can extend her killing spree. Its edge of seat action from the start, and yet even when in the middle of a really tricky situation Roxie still has that great sense of snarky humour that makes her such a fabulous heroine. Its seems little really fazes her and she'll always do what’s right regardless of the cost to herself. Sadly this leads to her car, home and office being damaged badly and her life being in danger. All in a days work for the fearless Roxie though. I loved the introduction to her Root magic, and found it a very interesting balance to the traditional spells and incantations so often used to describe magic. Having seen how Roxie meets Blake and what results I can see why her cousin/ancestor vampire Daniel dislikes him so much. Daniel is very protective of Roxie and hates that Blake has put her in danger. Blake's reaction at the end of the novel would make me feel the same way as Daniel and Roxie and he has a lot of ground to catch up on in the next book. Roxie is a heroine in the best of traditions, smart and sexy, sassy and yet sympathetic, impulsive but also thoughtful and always on the side of Right. Daniel is the perfect foil, quiet and protective, strong yet smooth and always wanting to look after Roxie. He's the only one of her family that accepts her for what she is, the rest are afraid of her magic and would rather ignore it regardless of the problems it would cause her. Daniel is just perfect and for a change there's no romance between them, just a very intense feeling that they will protect each other no matter what. Daniel is shown as a real vampire with a need for blood and we see how he's not just a typical PNR sexy vamp but also one that can be very dangerous when the vampire takes over even to those he loves. Blake – well – what can I say, you messed up big time Blake with the demon summoning but didn't mean to, and generous hearted Roxie is ready to try to forgive that but then at the end – Just What did you think you were doing? I'm not going to spoil it – but just say that was a huge surprise for me and thank goodness book two is already out so readers can catch up with what happens next. Stars: five – great book, well priced and one to join my favourites re read series.
Roxanne Mathis is anything but your average girl, she's a witch and "ghost hunter" who happens to have a vampire as her cousin. As a paranormal investigator and exterminator, Roxanne is used to dealing with mischievous ghosts and spirits in her work, but nothing prepares her for her latest gig. When a couple of college students hire her to perform an exorcism, things take a dark and ominous turn and Roxie finds herself in the middle of a string of slayings by a conjured demon. As if things couldn't get any worse, Roxie feels an immense attraction for the mysterious and sexy sorcerer, Blake, who unleashed all the evil she is now trying to banish. In a world where nothing is as it seems, Roxie will have to put in some major overtime on this case, embrace her true power to defeat the demon and try her best not to mix business with pleasure!
This is one of those stories that make you pull an all-nighter to finish! Sonya Clark masterfully combines paranormal romance with an edgy dark side and great humor. Roxie takes center stage as the heroine and completely wins you over with her charm and wit. She's not your typical Alpha butt kicking leading lady, but holds her own as a smart and sometimes nerdy witch with insecurities. Blake, Seth and Daniel are the perfect ensemble of supporting characters for this smart and spellbinding story. Even the villain has personality and is quite entertaining!
Mojo Queen delivers a mysterious thrill ride full of lust and danger. Blake and Roxie have major sexual tension for most of the book and a few sexy scenes that will leave the "smut lover," like me, content. I'd label this story more urban fantasy with paranormal romance elements for a lack of strong romance, but one you'll surely devour. Roxie and her gang will keep you in suspense, entertain you with their sparkling personalities and have you laughing out loud at times. If you like your paranormal with a pinch of darkness and spoonfuls of humor, this one's for you!

Mojo Queen was good read, it grabbed my attention right away and wouldn't let go. I was with the characters the entire time. The battles they faced, I faced with them. When they were running for their lives, I got winded. Lol. The ending was a little disappointing though; I was hoping for a nice big pizzazz ending but it kind of left you hanging. I wasn’t sure if the heroine and hero got together or not. But beyond that, I loved this book.
Roxanne is a woman with magical abilities who can see auras and do a little bit of magic. She exterminates ghosts from people's houses for a living with her cousin Daniel, who's a vampire. When Roxanne gets hired to do an exorcism for some college kids, Seth and Gabe, all hell breaks loose. She learns that a mysterious man named Blake taught the kids to perform magic and persuaded them to conjure an evil demon to possess their friend, Delia, who then goes on a killing spree. When they realize that Blake isn’t as bad as they thought he was, Roxanne and Daniel team up with him to capture the demon and send her back to Hell. But Roxanne and Blake have an instant attraction to each other, one that could either save them…or kill them.
Mojo Queen brings a lot to the table and is filled with adventure, ghosts, demons and poltergeists. I've always been drawn to books about witchcraft, spells and ghosts, and this one did not disappoint! It was a fast read that I enjoyed. I just wish the ending had been a bit better, but I really can't complain. This story is definitely a keeper and one I will read again in the future.
Okay. This book? Kinda rocked my world. It was fast paced, fun, a touch sexy and the love interest wasn't at all what I was expecting. I mean, I didn't think I'd like a guy who dabbles in dark magic but he's got this whole vibe going on. It was borderline awesome edging into full on panty melt.
I really *really* liked that the magical aspects weren't over-explained. They were touched on and you were given a broad sense of what the different elements of the spells, etc were used for but there wasn't a lengthy monologue about why the candles were placed at the corners or why salt is protective. It was nice to glean the information through deductive reasoning as opposed to having it thrown in your face and spelled out.
Roxie herself was pretty darn cool. She's basically untutored in her power using her baseline knowledge of root magic to keep things on the up and up for the most part. She's open minded (having a vampire family member will do that, I guess), smart and willing to put herself in risky situations to help others. The situation she's thrown into is way above her normal house hauntings but she can't walk away when innocent people are being hurt.
I adored Blake. He's made some really crappy choices but he's not a bad guy. Plus, he's got that whole sex magic thing going on. Sweet.
Bottom line: I liked this book. It was gritty, downright gross at times and twisted enough to keep me riveted. More, please.

Mojo Queen Roxanne gets dragged into a situation involving a demon possessing a young girl. She realizes the situation is bigger than she can handle, but does that stop her?
Nope.
She's a tough girl who doesn't let anything get in her way, even hellhounds.
At a mere 123 pages, this book definitely kept me on my toes. It felt like the characters had just barely begun to relax when something else happened.
I totally dug this book and loved that it was a different element of paranormal. I loved that her paranormal aspect was dealing with roots and herbs.
I hope this becomes a series because I'd love to read another Roxanne story!
Witches, Ghosts, Demons and A Vampire Oh My! This book had all that and more. What I loved and found intriguing about this book was it didn't have a stereotypical hero, in fact I did not like the male character in this book at first though parts of me thought there was more to Blake than meets the eye.
Talk about a wild ride though, and I don't mean in a bad way either. But there are parts that even have me wincing. Sonja does a wonderful job with description to bring on that effect with me.Though I didn't expect the book to end the way it did, but it did answer some questions that I had been wondering through out the book.
If you're looking for romance then this book isn't for you, though it does have a hot scene or two in it but if you're looking for a book with loads of action then please give this book a try.
I love stories with quirky, flawed characters and Mojo Queen fit that perfectly. Roxie's a wonderfully unusual heroine, gift with magic but still very much learning how to use it, tempered with compassion and when needed, courage. Her "cousin" Daniel is her greatest supporter, and a complex character as well with a long, complicated history. Both outcasts of their family, they have a unique relationship. I think my favorite was Blake, though I can't call him a traditional hero, he was unlike any I've ever read. Deeply flawed, but he somewhat redeems himself because of Roxie. I hope we get to see more of him in the second book. If you're a fan like me of the Grimm series, you'll find yourself addicted to Mojo Queen and craving more. I'm really looking forward to the December release of The Red House.
