Diamond Flush by Zeke Masters is the 4th book in the Faro Blake series. This is my first introduction to Masters and I’m sorry to say he falls far short of the marks set by Zane Grey, Luke Short, A.B. Guthrie, Ray Hogan and Louis LÁmour. I find the characters weak and the situations stressfully inconceivable. I doubt if it approaches the true flavor and texture of the American west of 1870. Historical facts are either distorted or incorrect. An example of this is a reference to Folsom Prison and one of its inmates. In point of fact, construction of Folsom Prison began in 1878 and didn’t open until 1880. This novel was set in the 1870’s thus making the reference to Folsom impossible. The story was aesthetically sufficient but lacked in content and plot. The dialog was poor and the erotic scenes crude and lacking. I am generally a reader that is easily pleased and can accept and respect the author’s efforts. I wouldn’t recommend this book as I know there are many books in this genre that are a cut or two above this one.
