I enjoyed this book more than the other PUSH book I had previously read, PUSH Stitchery.

This book would have received a 5 star review if the book had better information on the artists themselves been a little better put together. My complaints are related not to the art or artists themselves, but to the publisher. I know that more than one of the artists had already published books at the time of this publication, however the published works by the artists were not listed. I also think that some of the artists web addresses should have had notations to indicate that their websites were not in English, with additional web addresses for their English sites when available. It was incredibly frustrating trying to navigate some of the non-English sites, some of which had a link to an English/translated version when you were on their site.

I also wish that the publishers had given information for sources for those who are interested in learning more about paper art not just the artists, but I would have given the book a 5 star without this if the information about the artists had been more complete.

(Full disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from Sterling Publishing.)

This is a fascinating collection of the work of 30 contemporary paper artists. Although all of these artists use paper, the range of styles and projects is quite diverse. The standardized layout brings together the work so that the book seems cohesive. Each artist is profiled in several pages, including a portrait, a gallery of work against a white background, and responses to standardized Q&A. (One artist substituted her work for her portrait, and another shared a "split image" where half is a drawing and half is a photograph of her face.) As with any collection of this type, some of the work will speak to you and some of it won't, but you will be fascinated by the skill of the artists and the range of objects they create from paper.

This would be a great "coffee table" book - although it is small, it has a vibrancy and there are many amazing images inside. It is also the type of book that artists working in other media could use for inspiration. Considering that book is hardbound and includes many color photographs, it is remarkably inexpensive. (So, if you're frugal like me, it would make a great gift!)

My only minor complaint is that the organization of the book is unclear, making it challenging to return quickly to an artwork or artist you discovered. I suspect that the curator, Jaime Zollars, arranged the work and artists in some way that made sense to her, but isn't immediately apparent to the reader.
