About the author

Hello, my name's Dorothy Koomson and I'll try to make this bit that's all about me as interesting as possible.
I wrote my first novel called There's A Thin Line Between Love And Hate when I was 13. I used to write a chapter every night then pass it around to my fellow convent school pupils every morning, and they seemed to love it.

I grew up in London and then grew up again in Leeds when I went to university. I eventually returned to London to study for my masters degree and stayed put for the following years. I took up various temping jobs and eventually got my big break writing, editing and subbing for various women's magazines and national papers.

Fiction and storytelling were still a HUGE passion of mine and I continued to write short stories and novels every spare moment that I got. In 2001 I had the idea for The Cupid Effect and my career as a published novelist began. And it's been fantastic. In 2006, third novel, My Best Friend's Girl was published. It was incredibly successful - selling nearly 90,000 copies within its first few weeks on sale. Six weeks later, it was selected for the Richard & Judy Summer Reads Book Club and the book went on to sell over 500,000 copies. Oh, there I go again, this is meant to be about me, not my novels.

Okay, back to me. I recently spent two years living in Sydney Australia, and now I'm back in England. But I can't say for how long I'll be in the UK for because I've been well and truly bitten by the travel bug

Libby and Jack are involved in a terrible car accident where Libby has to be cut out of the car. Jack is uninjured but Libby is in a critical condition and suffers a bad head injury along with many cuts and bruises. After spending quite some time in hospital she starts to recover and eventually Jack is allowed to take her home.
The story flashes back to Jack and Libby's lives before the accident and we we discover how they met which was when Libby was purchasing her first car. Her first impressions of Jack were not so good to say the least.

As the story unfolds we find out that Jack's first wife Eve died tragically at home. Eve was Jack first love and when she died he was heartbroken and thought he would never find true love again that was until he met Libby. Although Libby knows about Jack's late wife she becomes more unsure if Jack has ever loved her and if he is over the death of Eve. There are many nights when Libby is woken up because of Jack's nightmares where he is calling out Eve's name. When Libby approaches Jack the following morning he is reluctant to talk about it.

One day whilst Libby is recovering at home after the accident she stumbles across diaries which belonged to Eve. At first she is reluctant to read them but then curiosity gets the better of her. These diaries started from when Eve was sixteen years old so Libby starts to get an understanding of who Eve really was and the life she led. Libby is quite surprised in what she finds in these diaries and in time will discover how Eve really died and now Libby worries if she too could be in danger.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was drawn into this story right from the start and thought it was a brilliant read. I will certainly be reading more books by this author and I have no hesitation in recommending this one.

Libby ima predivnog muža Jacka, prelijepu kuću pored mora i posao koji voli. Ipak, čini joj se da će zauvijek ostati u sjeni Jackove bivše žene Eve koja je nastradala pod čudnim okolnostima. Nakon saobraćajne nesreće Libby ostaje u kući i pregledajući Eveine stvari pronalazi dnevnik u kojem je priča o njenom životu. Kako dalje čita shvata da Eve i nije bila tako savršena i da se iza njene smrti krije nešto što nije mogla ni naslutiti... da li bi i ona mogla tako završiti?

U ovom romanu paralelno pratimo priče koje nam pripovijedaju Libby i Jack i dnevničke zapise koje Libby čita. Iako se roman proteže na gotovo 450 strana, brzo i sa lakoćom se čita, a Eveina sudbina ne može da ne dotakne čitaoca. Ovo mi je njen peti roman i opet je dokazala zašto spada među moje najdraže moderne autorice! <3

Dorothy Koomson..she knows how to write.

I have already read about four of her works and really did like all of them. Reading The Woman he loved before did not change this.

This is a poignant and beautifully written novel about Libby and Jack. They are married and Libby works as a beauty technologist. But her whole life is changed after a car accident that leaves Jack fine but Libby very hurt as well as disfigured. She starts to doubt the strength of Jack's love for her while also starting to doubt herself and the choices she has made .

Add to that a mystery..Jack was previously married and his first wife, Eve, died under mysterious circumstances. Libby becomes sure that Jack is hiding something from her and questions the circumstances around Eve's death as well as wondering just how "over" his first wife Jack is.

This was a wonderful novel that could have been awful..it is a topic that has been done before. But somehow in Koomson's hands, the story feels brand new. The characters are finely sketched and the story is woven together beautifully. It is a long book but I finished it in one sitting. I could not tear my eyes from the pages.

It is hard to give this book a category..it has a bit of gothic, some romance , mystery as well as drama. At the end of the day, this is just a wonderful book I enjoyed greatly. Is there nothing Koomson can write that I do not instantly love?

4. 5 stars. I would recommend this and if you have never picked up a Dorothy Koomson book..what are you waiting for?

A minha estreia com tão conhecida autora não podia ter sido melhor.
Este livro tem tudo: romance, drama e mistério.
A história criada por Dorothy Koomson apresenta-nos personagens que poderiam muito bem ser reais. São pessoas tal e qual como nós: com os seus defeitos e virtudes que tentam navegar ao longo da vida em busca da felicidade, por mais remota e difícil que esta possa ser.

Os últimos capítulos são simplesmente sufocantes. O nível de intensidade, o stress incutido, o medo e o suspense são tais que dei por mim a devorar com sofreguidão as últimas páginas.

Fiquei muito curiosa para ler outras obras desta autora que, pelo pouco que vi, merece toda a fama que alcançou.

What an absorbing read that tells of love, choices and the consequences of how the past affects the future! It reminds us that what you see isn’t always what you get!

The prologue is enough on it’s own to hook you in - as we know from reading the blurb, Jack was married to Eve before Libby and there are secrets. The prologue confirms that things might not be exactly what they seem. The minute you start reading the first page, you have a question that you need to know the answer to - which you know will only come to light the further along you read……………. The story itself starts with a car accident and I loved the way it dips back into the accident as the story unfolds making you wonder what you don’t know, what you are missing from the lives of these people.

The build up of Jack and Libby’s relationship is paced so that you don’t get bored and the characters are portrayed in-depth so you get to identify and empathise with them. The thread of Eve doesn’t weave in until half-way through the story. This could feel like you are reading two different stories but not only does the writing flow, the integration of Eve is seamless. I thought the way DK brings Eve into the present time was very clever. I found her skill in doing this also brought my mind on track ready to get back into Jack and Libby’s life as the previous part of their journey was reintroduced to the reader.

Once again, DK challenges our perceptions of the social issues in our culture, issues that we don’t want to acknowledge but are very real. She does it with such finesse but in such depth that you totally empathise.

I was expecting intrigue and wow, there is plenty of that which kept my interest all the way through. I made some guesses along the way and it turned out that in a way I was right but not in the way I expected. You will have to read the book to find out more …………………………

Entramos nesta história na altura em que Libby e Jack têm um acidente de automóvel que terá consequências para além das físicas. Consequências que não podiam sequer imaginar.

Interessei-me pelo romance de Libby e Jack quase instantaneamente; desde a forma como se conheceram e como se apaixonaram até darem o passo do casamento, mas quando Koomson insere a história de Eve, a esposa falecida de Jack, o livro adquire outra profundidade.

Através dos seus honestos diários ficamos a saber como a vida de Eve foi sofrida; fugiu de casa para enfrentar uma cidade como Londres sozinha e acabou por ter que trabalhar como lap dancer e mais tarde como prostituta, lidando com homens nojentos, submetendo-se aos caprichos dos mesmos. Há sempre escolha e Eve fez as suas sem, no entanto, imaginar o que estas poderiam vir a custar no futuro, como poderiam vir a magoar as pessoas que viria a amar.

Por seu lado, Libby encontra-se na ingrata posição de ocupar o lugar de outra mulher - uma mulher que, percebe, apesar do que sofreu na vida nunca perdeu a capacidade de amar nem de ser generosa. Enquanto lê os diários Libby fica a conhecer o outro amor da vida de Jack, encontrando resposta a muitas dúvidas que Jack nunca esclareceu.

Koomson é uma excelente contadora de histórias, fazendo-o directamente através dos seus personagens. Em O Outro Amor da Vida Dele, a escritora permite-nos acompanhar a história através de Jack, Libby e Eve. Assim, vai-nos revelando o que aconteceu no passado enquanto assistimos à luta de Libby no presente para ultrapassar o trauma do acidente e o desmoronamento do seu casamento. Apesar do medo de perder Jack, Libby não está disposta a ficar com metade do seu amor.

O livro gira ainda à volta do mistério associado à morte de Eve... e quando Libby descobre finalmente o que aconteceu àprimeira mulher de Jack, encontra-se igualmente em perigo.

Este foi o livro que mais gostei da autora, a seguir "A filha da minha melhor amiga", que para mim, foi o primeiro que li dela e continua a ser o que mais gostei. Adoro a escrita de Dorothy Koomson e nenhum dos livros dela me desilude.Este livro teve um suspense que me agradou muito e adorei as partes do diário de Eve, pois a partir daí conseguimos entender a história dela e tudo o que se passou.

Quando li o livro "A filha da minha melhora amiga" fiquei completamente conquistada pela escrita desta autora. Com vontade de ler todos os livros que eram publicados por ela... não consegui ler todos ainda, claro, mas dos que li alguns gostei mais que outros, o que acho ser normal, pois nunca se consegue agradar sempre.

Por isso foi com expectativa que peguei neste livro para o ler. O inicio foi o mais banal possivel, pelo menos para mim, mas a partir de certa altura, sentia-me tão empolgada em saber o que tinha acontecido e o que ia acontecer no futuro que mal conseguia largar o livro. Gostei bastante e o final, apesar de não ser muito surpreendente, teve um toque do qual gostei bastante. Recomendo sem duvida nenhuma! Venham mais desta escritora :)

Esta autora tem-me surpreendido, nunca pensei gostar tanto das suas histórias. Esta foi um pouco diferente, no sentido em que a morte e o assassínio são temas bastante presentes. Morri de medo pelas personagens e houve alturas em que me senti psicologicamente afetada. A vida da Eve perturbou-me de uma forma que nenhuma outra história o fez. Já li outros livros sobre temas fortes e complicados, mas nunca me tinha sentido tão perto de uma personagem, quase como se sentisse na pele dela... Não senti grande empatia pela Libby, e penso que isso contribuiu para o fato de não ter adorado o livro. Por outro lado, a resolução da história aconteceu depressa demais, precisava de um pouco mais do vilão, principalmente para saber o que lhe aconteceu depois do que a autora, genialmente, lhe reservou.

Tik ta moteriška drama buvo TOKIA įtempta, TOKIA įtraukianti ir TOKIA nenuspėjama, kad švelniomis moteriškomis akimirkomis, šio skaitymo nepavadinčiau.

Libė ir Džekas - sutuoktinių pora. Džekui Libė - antroji žmoną. Pirmąją, Evą, jis prarado. Eva žuvo namuose nukritusi nuo laiptų. Džekas niekaip negali susitaikyti su Evos mirtimi, ir tai apkartina gyvenimą Libei. Jai suku matyti bendruose namuose kaupiamus pirmosios žmonos daiktus, girdėti kaip per sapnus vyras jos šaukiasi, ar net ją pačią painioja su Eva. Libė vis labiau gręžiasi nuo vyro negalėdama tikėti jų bendra laime. Tačiau tam tikriems įvykiams susiklosčius, Libė sužino jog pirmoji Džeko žmona turėjo daug paslapčių. Pradėjusi jas aiškintis, Libė atranda senus Evos dienoraščius, kurie atskleidžia tokias paslaptis, apie kurias ji net pagalvot negalėjo. Sunki vaikystė, bėgimai iš namų, nepadorūs darbai ir viso to pasėkmės. Skaitydama dienoraščius Libė nejausdama įsitraukia į labai pavojingą žaidimą.

Tai antroji mano perskaityta Dorothy Koomson knyga. Piemoji "Ledų mergaitės", man labai didelio įspūdžio nepaliko. Na , o apie šią to pasakyti negalėčiau. Daug iš romano nesitikėjau, tačiaugavau visko su kaupu. Tai puikus trileris, su detektyvo elementais ir puikiai viską apjungti jausmų drama. Isrtorija pasakojama iš trijų perspektyvų: Džeko, Libės ir Evos dienoraščių. Ir negalėčiau pasakyti, kad kažkurio pasakojimas buvo įdomesnis ar ne - visų laukiau, ir knygą padėti į šoną man tapo iššūkiu. Knygos pabaiga tai pat, labai netikėta - net pora valandų anksčiau kėliausi, kad spėčiau ją pabaigti ir viską sužinoti iki prasidedant dienos darbams. Taitikrai stiprus romanas mėgstantiems aštresnų siužetą, dramą ir neatskleistas šokiruojančias paslapti. Mėgausis visi mėgstantys Picoult, Chamberlain ir pačią Koomson.

O Outro Amor da Vida Dele é dos romances favoritos dos leitores de Dorothy Koomson, mas foi precisamente aquilo que o torna tão adorado que me fez desiludir-me pela primeira vez com a minha escritora favorita.

Libby é apaixonada por Jack, o seu marido, com quem partilha uma vida feliz. Não há nada que perturbe o seu casamento, à exceção de uma coisa; ou melhor, uma pessoa: Eve, a primeira mulher de Jack, que faleceu em circunstâncias misteriosas. Devido a um acontecimento recente e inesperado que irá abalar a relação do casal e da própria protagonista consigo mesma, Libby começa a questionar-se seriamente se Jack conseguiu realmente superar a morte do seu primeiro amor, levando-a a ir à procura de respostas: Quem foi Eve? Porque razão Jack se recusa a falar sobre ela? Será que a sua morte foi realmente um acidente? E como poderá o seu passado ter desencadeado tal?

Como já vos tinha confessado neste post suspeitava ser vítima de uma terrível ressaca literária e tudo neste livro gritava o fim da mesma. Para além de já estar marcado como Um dos melhores livros de Dorothy Koomson pelos fãs desta amada escritora, as primeiras 172 páginas foram devoradas rapidamente e sem vergonha. Apeguei-me imediatamente a Libby e senti na pele todo o seu sofrimento, por amar alguém que não conseguia amar mais ninguém como amou «o outro amor da vida dele» e por tudo porque teve de passar desde o acontecimento que se dá imediatamente no início deste livro. Durante os primeiros nove capítulos desta obra, a autora deu destaque à relação de Jack e Libby, ao mistério da morte de Eve e à tarefa de Libby de superar os últimos incidentes e as consequências que tiveram na sua pessoa. Até esse momento, saltamos entre as perspetivas de Libby e Jack, sendo as deste último mais curtas, que serviam não só para compreender parte dos seus sentimentos como também para atiçar a nossa curiosidade em relação às questões já mencionadas. E, durante todos estes capítulos, geraram-se expectativas corruptas e não lhes atribuo a culpa à minha pessoa, somente à autora, por me ter enganado levando a crer que este livro seria uma coisa quando tinha a intenção de o tornar outra completamente diferente.

E é, no capítulo dez, na página 175 que começa a perspetiva de Eve, a primeira esposa de Jack. Tendo em conta todas questões levantadas pela escritora, estas eram as razões porque Koomson nos oferecia tal ponto de vista: para compreender a influência de Eve em Jack, para desvendar os mistérios do seu passado que poderão ter levado ao seu trágico desfecho. Estava certa: esses eram os objetivos da autora. Mas ela não os pretendia executar tão cedo.

153 páginas de O Outro Amor da Vida Dele são dedicadas a 15 anos da vida de Eve, desde o fim dos seus 16 anos até a sua morte prematura. 153 que não são dedicadas aos enigmas deste livro, mas à história cruel desta personagem, sujeita a terríveis circunstâncias e obrigada a fazer duras escolhas. Acontece que, durante o tempo em que temos a Eve como narradora, ou seja, desde a página 175 até à 406, mas principalmente desde a página 175 até à 354, não há qualquer desenvolvimento significativo na história. Temos alguns capítulos narrados por Libby e por Jack, mas nenhum progresso na sua relação, na recuperação de Libby ou no enigma da morte de Eve. 119 páginas de história que deveria ser secundária, mas que acabou por se tornar o foco da segunda parte da obra. Afinal, não era Libby a personagem principal? Deixou de ser, durante muitas e muitas páginas, para dar o protagonismo a Eve, aspeto que não podia ter me desagradado mais, já que, a partir do momento em que nos é introduzida esta nova narradora, 62% da obra passa a ser narrada por ela (dei-me ao trabalho de fazer contas, é verdade! Chama-se indignação).

Eve é caracterizada como uma mulher forte e lutadora que, apesar das circunstancias a que foi sujeita e de todo o sofrimento que sentiu durante grande parte desses 15 anos da sua vida, nunca desistiu e manteve-se forte. Essa é a razão porque este romance é tão adorado e também a razão porque me desiludi tanto (já disse isto, não disse? Estou certa que sim). Apesar de tudo porque passou e da compaixão que senti por ela, não fui capaz de admirar Eve em qualquer momento do livro, pelo menos na mesma medida que outros leitores. Senti-me desconfortável com as decisões que foi forçada a tomar e com tudo o que ela nos narrava, no entanto, não era a ela que eu desejava dar atenção, mas sim a Jack e a Libby. Não me julguem, não pensem que sou insensível a tudo porque passou, pura e simplesmente, e infelizmente, as suas palavras não me conquistaram. Na minha opinião, Koomson podia ter aproveitado a visão de Eve de uma maneira bastante diferente e mais cativante. Claro que isso faria dela uma personagem menos memorável, contudo, a autora deveria ter procurado por outras soluções na forma como construir esta história e organizar este enredo. Compreendo porque demorou tanto tempo a abordar novamente as questões Será que a morte de Eve foi realmente um acidente? O que tem o seu passado a ver com tal? : só necessitamos de uma fatia pequena da sua história para chegar à mesma conclusão a que Libby chegou. Também não deveria ter feito, em nenhum momento, o leitor suspeitar de Jack, porque é mais do que evidente que ele nunca seria capaz de cometar nenhum ato semelhante (digo-vos isto não com a intenção de vos dar spoilers, até porque ao fim de umas páginas vocês certamente chegarão ou chegaram à mesma conclusão, por isso mais vale não terem as ideias defraudadas). Não encontro muitas soluções que não alterem grande parte da história, contudo, não sou escritora - sei que é errado exigir algo de alguém quando nós não somos capazes de melhor e até porque a história não é minha e não reservo qualquer direito de a alterar. Seja como for, o que está feito está feito, mas ainda assim desejava que a premissa tivesse sido aproveitada de maneira diferente (e já é a terceira vez este ano que isto acontece, chamem-lhe coincidência).

Perdoo a autora - como não poderia, após tantas outras obras amadas -, pois no final conseguiu redimir-se e finalmente chegar a algum lado. Teria, inevitavelmente, de o fazer, por isso talvez esta não seja razão para a desculpar, todavia, o final encheu-me as medidas e correspondeu aquilo que pretendia. Muitas pessoas esperavam um fim mais desenvolvido, mas eu contento-me com este. Ponderei seriamente se deveria descer tantas estrelas por algo que, julgo eu, era intenção da autora desde o início, e cheguei à conclusão que não. Apesar do enredo não ter sido sempre do meu agrado, a escrita continua a ser maravilhosa e inconfundível, as personagens são reais e credíveis e o final é aquilo que se deseja quando se sofre uma pequena desilusão.

I love Dorothy Koomson. The first novel I read of hers was Marshmallows For Breakfast a couple of years back. I thought it was an excellent read but it was incomparable to her novel released in 2010 The Ice Cream Girls, that was… there are few words to describe just how amazing The Ice Cream Girls really was. I then went back and read the book that made Dorothy famous, My Best Friend’s Girl and for the third book running, I loved it. Dorothy Koomson is just so talented at getting to the heart of a novel and she always, always writes plots that no one else could ever really come up with. She rivals Jodi Picoult with her plots. So I was incredibly thrilled to receive a copy of her newest book The Woman He Loved Before. It’s taken me a few months to read it, but it kept catching my eye so I finally read it.

When I read the synopsis of The Woman He Loved Before, I suspected Jack of very bad things. The way it’s worded, the way it rolls off the tongue, it seems as if Jack is some kind of evil person. Or perhaps that’s just me. Who knows? It all seemed very creepy, so I was pleasantly surprised that the plot of the novel wasn’t necessarily what I thought it was going to be. (Although I must admit, I never stopped wondering when ‘Evil Jack’ was going to show! For some strange reason, I was truly sitting and waiting for him to be evil.) The plot of The Woman He Loved Before is hard to define; it’s hard to discuss without spoiling it because despite my thoughts on the synopsis, I didn’t have a pre-conceived notion of what the book was going to be about, what was going to happen. I thought that was an excellent way to read the book, though, as because Dorothy’s books are so mysterious and can turn on a dime, it’s best to start reading her novels without knowing any major plot points; it just works better.

What I knew from the outset about the book was such: Libby is married to Jack; Jack was married to Eve; Eve died. That was the sum of all my knowledge, except for my inexplicable worry about Jack being evil but that was conjecture. I thought the book managed to keep its pace really well. Libby’s current situation is a surprise, and how Libby happens upon learning more about Eve is even more of a surprise. I mean, the prologue really set the book up properly, and be warned, you won’t be able to read the prologue without wanting to read the rest of the book. I’ve never read a more chilling, more enticing prologue. The book is then written from three points of view: Libby, Jack, Eve. Jack’s portions of the novel were short and sweet, but they offered a good insight into Libby and into Eve. Libby’s portion of the novel was the longest, obviously, and it was intriguing to see how despite feeling as though Jack did love her, she always had the nagging feeling about Eve, always wondered if he loved her (Eve) more. I found Eve’s part of the book truly fascinating. Eve’s story is the one that really gives the novel its backbone. It sets it all up for the ending, it explains everything that happened, and it was the catalyst for everything in the book, basically. It’s like it all began and it all ended with Eve.

I found the characters to be very fascinating, Dorothy Koomson is a wonderful character writer. Libby was just the right side of sympathetic. Her love for Jack was real and palpable and I did feel sorry for her that she always felt she was second best. Much like her, I could understand completely why she was desperate to know everything there was to know about Eve; who wouldn’t be in her position? Like I already mentioned above, I did expect Jack to be some kind of monster but I was pleasantly surprised to find actually, he wasn’t that bad a person. I mean, it’s not entirely his fault that he loved Eve as much as he did, and despite Libby’s reservations and despite Jack’s wonderings too, I did believe he loved Libby on some level and I felt sympathy for him, too. Eve, though, was by far the most fascinating character. Her live, how she lived it, was compulsive reading. The revelations about her life stunned me, and I’m still not 100% sure how I felt about Eve. There’s part of me that understands her life choices, understands everything she went through but there was a part of me – a very large part of me – that was disgusted with it all. I think Koomson balanced it nicely, but it did still make me feel slightly uncomfortable, just through the choices Eve had to make.

The Woman He Loved Before was an excellent read. Usually I’m fairly good at ‘making’ the endings of novels. I didn’t make this one. I had no idea that twist was coming, although when it was revealed there’s part of me that did say “Well it had to happen, didn’t it?” but still, it was a total and utter shock. Although the novel was brilliant, I do have to question a few points. I know it’s fiction, so Koomson has creative license, but at the beginning of the book there are some police mentioned, they come to see Libby in fact and after that, they disappear. I found that baffling. The reasons they gave for coming to see Libby tell me they wouldn’t have given it up and I found it very strange that that particular plot line wasn’t put to bed properly. Either Koomson should have given it its due or she should have scrapped it because the way it was, was nonsensical and it felt unfinished. Apart from that, this was another gripping, excellent read. It must be draining to write a book like this; I was drained just reading it. I’m happy I read it though, Koomson is a master storyteller and I can’t wait for her next novel. Her books are absolute must-reads.

Este é o quarto livro que leio de Dorothy Koomson, sendo que já há uns anos que não lia nada da autora e nem sei explicar porquê.
Neste livro, conhecemos Libby que é a segunda mulher de Jack, e que após um grave acidente sente que precisa de saber mais sobre Eve, a falecida mulher de Jack.
A verdade é que Dorothy Koomson é exímia a transmitir-nos emoções e a fazer-nos sentir empatia com as personagens e este livro não foi excepção. É certo que é não me fez chorar como os anteriores livros que li da autora, mas senti-me atingida por um turbilhão de emoções devido à história de Eve.
Eve foi sem dúvida a minha personagem preferida, principalmente pelo tema em que se centra, mas também Harriet que no final me surpreendeu (não me vou alongar porque para comentar acho que faria algum spoiler e isso é algo que tento sempre evitar).
Algo que também me agarrou foi o mistério sempre presente ao longo do livro, que me fez ir desconfiando de várias personagens por diversos motivos.
Dorothy Koomson consegue criar uma história dramática que nos envolve, que nos atinge com várias emoções e nos faz devorar páginas atrás de páginas, sentindo que as suas personagens são pessoas reais.
No entanto há algo que me impede de atribuir as 5 estrelas. O final! Achei-o demasiado abrupto e julgo que merecia ter mais desenvolvimento.

Sendo fã de Dorothy Koomson, não poderia deixar de ler o seu novo romance: “O Outro amor da vida dele”. Com uma sinopse para lá de sugestiva, este livro revelou-se uma história viciante e de leitura compulsiva. Aparentemente centrado no casamento de Libby com Jack, Dorothy reserva-nos uma grande surpresa, a entrada de Eve na narração, a falecida mulher de Jack, que nos proporciona revelações surpreendentes sobre a sua vida desde adolescente até pouco depois do seu casamento. É aqui que a narração sofre uma enorme reviravolta e o mistério continua até aos últimos momentos. Algo que apreciei verdadeiramente neste livro, e que é importantíssimo sempre que iniciamos uma nova leitura é a forma como acontece, quais são as primeiras palavras que lemos. Este livro começou, na minha opinião, da melhor maneira possível: uma carta, um desabafo, um mistério iniciado.
Foi sem dúvida uma excelente leitura que muito me agradou e proporcionou momentos de grande ansiedade.
Aconselho sem dúvida alguma esta leitura.

From the time I had finished reading the prologue to this book I was hooked. I loved the plot, after a major accident Libby starts to question her relationship with Jack, and as she begins to investigate her questions only get bigger. She begins to find out more and more about Eve, his first wife who died in suspicious circumstances, and gets hooked on trying to find all the answers to her questions. When Libby finds Eve's diaries and begins to learn about her past and her relationship with Jack she finds herself questioning her own relationship with Jack, and begins to wonder if her life is also at risk. There are twists and turns galore, the final twist particularly made my jaw drop a little - I just hadn't seen it coming but when it was revealed it made so much sense I was kicking myself for not thinking about it.

I found the main characters very engaging, and I wanted to carry on reading to find out more about them. Whilst Jack's sections in the book are the smallest, he features strongly in both women's stories. I loved Libby, I found I could really identify with her. I also found Eve's story gripping, watching her life spiral downwards was a little heartbreaking at times. My only slight sadness was that we only saw a child briefly in the story, when Libby's nephew Benji appears. I love the way Koomson writes children but there was no place in this plot for a child, so Benji's brief appearance had to be sufficient.

The book is structured so that the chapters are divided into sections, each following the point of view of one of the three characters. Eve's sections are her diary extracts that Libby is reading, this works well as we really get to know the character through her diaries. I found that the flow of the book worked well, and the transitions between Libby's narrations and Eve's diary sections were seamless.

I absolutely loved this book and was thrilled to see that Dorothy Koomson had written another fantastic book. I have enjoyed every book she's written - I can't wait to see what the next book brings!

Como já tinha lido dois livros da autora (A Filha da minha melhor Amiga e A Praia das Pétalas de Rosa) que gostei, mas não me encheram as medidas, deixei este ficar na estante por um pouco mais de 6 meses até me dignar a lê-lo.
Agora penso: "PORQUÊ??? Porque é que não li isto antes?"

Simplesmente adorei. Adorei o enredo, adorei a estória da Eve, adorei o Jack, adorei os dramas e os pequenos twists, adorei a atitude da Harriet no final, adorei o destino que o Hector teve

This was a absorbing and compulsive read! Koomson creates suspense and a certain ansiety with a Midas's touch.
After the prologue, you are hooked on this story told by three people that somehow are connected.
It makes you mind race: so many mysteries to uncover and it hurts. Truly, it hurts! Eve's story, in particulary, is very emotional and utterly addictive. They are so many triggers in this books: abuse, violence, anxiety, depression e PTSD.
You can feel the tension growing as the pages go by... and when it cames to climax, it explodes!
A great thriller and a marvelous story of three people linked forever.

This story is about Libby, Jack, and the woman Jack loved before, Eve. Eve’s story saddened me each time I picked up this book. Jack is lucky to have Libby in his life. He is lucky to have a mother like Harriet, and best friends like Grace and Rupert. But Eve, she had a challenging life. She met monsters.

Dorothy Koomson não cessa de me surpreender. As suas personagem são tão reais que poderiam facilmente ser eu mesma ou alguém com quem me cruzo na rua no dia-a-dia. As suas qualidades, defeitos, receios, segredos, escolhas e fantasmas do passado enredam-se numa trama surpreendente que aborda temas difíceis e dolorosos de forma magistral.

Esta é a história de Jack, Libby e Eve. Gostei imenso destas três personagens e do que elas me transmitiram. Jack para mim representa a ironia da vida, mas também a determinação em ser alguém melhor, alguém de quem se possa orgulhar. Libby é a mulher independente, forte e segura de si mesma até que um acontecimento a faz ponderar na sua vida e traz à superfície a sua vulnerabilidade e insegurança relativamente à ex-mulher do seu marido. E por fim, Eve...

A Eve é a personagem que mais me tocou, talvez porque temos acesso à sua evolução ao longo de vários anos. E a sua história é notável. Eve demonstra-nos o poder das escolhas que fazemos, como essas mesmas escolhas podem alterar o rumo das nossas vidas e que essa mudança nem sempre é melhor. Também nos demonstra o poder da esperança e como esta é essencial para seguirmos em frente, essencial para não nos deixarmos ir abaixo. Além disso, Eve serve de veiculo para nos mostrar um dos lado mais negros deste mundo, da maldade, hipocrisia e podridão de algumas pessoas, através da espiral de degradação da qual é vitima e de como uma pessoa- a pessoa certa, que no caso de Eve foi Jack- consegue salvar o que resta de nós e fazer-nos sentir completos outra vez.

Existem outras personagens no livro, umas pouco importante, outras de extrema importância que afectaram e continuam a afectar de forma permanente a vida destas três personagens.

O livro poderia ser perfeito, se não fosse aquele final. Não que o conteúdo não fosse do meu agrado, mas foi muito superficial e apressado e sobe-me a pouco. Se a autora tivesse escrito mais um par de páginas e desenvolvido mais o que aconteceu ao Jack, à Libby, ao Hector e à Harriet teria gostado muito mais.

Mesmo com essa pequena falha, este é sem dúvida o melhor livro de Dorothy Koomson que li até hoje.

Dorothy Koomson's early books were quite clearly in the chick-lit category, written from the perspective of a Black British woman. They were bright and upbeat yet more challenging than the usual chick-lit, stories of middle-class women facing difficult decisions, without some of the idiocy typical in the genre.

The Woman He Loved Before was different - while it still had an educated Black woman (Libby) facing difficult decisions, the backstory was much darker, much more challenging. Libby is married to Jack, a widower who she suspects is still in love with his first wife, Eve. After a car accident that leaves Libby traumatised and housebound, she finds that not only did Eve die in suspicous circumstances, but the police consdier that the recent accident is Jack trying to be rid of wife number two. While recovering at home, and trying to come to terms with this, Libby finds Eve's diaries. A covering letter is attached, which claims that if she is dead, then she was murdered - not a comfortable thought.

The first section of the book shifts between the present (the accident scene) and the past (Jack's courtship of Libby, told from the perspective of both Jack and Libby). When the past catches up to the present, the book shifts into the deeper past, through Eve's diary entries. As Libby reads further, the story grows darker - and it is this detail that I found difficult to read, yet without it the book would have been incomplete. Without wishing to give away any spoilers, Pretty Woman is a fantasy; Eve's diary is the reality.

Picking a rating for this book is hard. I didn't like it, but that is a reflection on my reaction to the subject matter, not the story, the characters or the perspective - as a novel, it is much better than ok. It is well-written with engaging characters, each of whom has a distinctive yet realistic voice. The Woman He Loved Before it is a difficult, disturbing and challenging read, one that will stay with you much longer than other 'chick-lit' novels. Part of me would rather not have read it, part of me knows it is better that I did.

Well, I'm a huge Dorothy Koomson fan anyway but this book is her best yet! The two intricate stories were told with such care and attention to the links between the past and the present.

Story 1
Libby, a woman who at the beginning of the novel is in a critical condition after being in a car accident. We then look into her past to establish the relationship between her and her husband. Jack, who links all three of the stories together and is to some extent a progtagonist to the events which take place.

Story 2
Eve is 'The Woman he Loved Before' when Libby stumbles upon her diaries we see an insight into the past, further though than simply the time when she met Jack. Libby's discoveries lead her to a dangerous situation which then leaves her with some serious decisions to make which could result in her death.

I would recommend this book to anyone who love stories which intertwine to create a developed story which will leave you with some shocks along the way!

A really engaging and absorbing read. The way Dorothy Koomson has interwoven Eve’s story with that of Jack & Libby is very well done. The characters are very well-developed and the plot, although quite dark in places, is interesting and unpredictable. Even quite close to the end of the novel there were several directions the story could have taken. I think the relatively small cast of characters creates an intensity to the plot and a definite feeling of tension.
