Existence after Skydark is a gamble against grim odds—winners and losers decided by guns, jack and raw nerve. Because keeping hope alive is the next best thing to a good shot at finding something better.
LAW OF SUDDEN DEATH
Baron Crabbe is dangerously high on legends of the Trader and rumors of a secret cache. He occupies a redoubt but the old tech remains unfathomable. His ace in the hole is Ryan Cawdor and his band. Prisoners at blasterpoint, they’re ordered to use the matter-transfer units to secure the whereabouts of the imagined weapons stockpile. Ryan knows the truth—and it won’t help Crabbe. But the only option is to play along with the crazed Baron’s scheme and make the dangerous jumps in a limited window of time. Staying alive is all about buying time—waiting for their one chance to chill their captors.
Guilty pleasure time again. No secret I am a big time fan of the whole Deathlands series.
Lost Gates is a different take on the usual format of the stories. I've always enjoyed the jump scenes as there is often a lot of action around them. This story has six of them, so lots of action and lots of suspense. The companions were partnered in new ways and had to function without the support of the rest of the group.
My problem with the story was the repetitive scene setting. Sometimes as many as 4 restating of the same situation. I get it, he's injured and it's hard to move. I didn't need to be reminded every other sentence. Quibbling maybe but it got on my nerves.
My actual star rating for those who require it: 3.5. But the important thing is that it is still good post-apocalyptic action adventure even though this is the 101st entry in the series. Enjoy!
My first Deathlands novel and was not sure what to think about 50 pages in and it was kind of pointless honestly but it had some good flashback cutting where it pointed to what was coming. It really takes off soon after that. This is all mostly action without any character development but there are some good characters . Jumping to bases with their own unique form of danger is a type of story I eat up. I liked the action in a claustrophobic setting without completely resorting to full on shootouts. It scratched an itch for some action based, sci-fi(and my favorite kind of sci-fi where it's just fun and not serious at all).
Pitifully trumped up with profanity every other sentence. I'm not offended, but bored. Nobody talks like that. Also needs more Ryan and less of the others. PRetty funny Gary Busey impression by actor portraying the bad guy!
