Mistakes...

Everyone makes them. We are only human.

Some of our mistakes are small... like the times you stay up till 2 am studying for a test that you end up failing because you are too tired to think.

Others are so catastrophic that they change your life.... forever....

Maddison regrets not listening to her parents, not being a 'good girl' and not staying at home like she was supposed to instead of sneaking off with her friends for a Spring Break getaway. How she wishes she could turn back time; then maybe she wouldn't be in the nightmare she is in now. Kidnapped and taken to a different country unaware of where she is or what these men want with her.

Maddy's parents can't help her, in fact they aren't even aware she is in Mexico. Who can save her? Or can she save herself?

To say that the events that transpired in the novel MISTAKES was terrifying and unspeakably inhumane is a gross understatement. As a woman... a sister, a daughter and an aunt to teenaged girls, I cannot even begin to imagine the horrors the characters in this story experienced.

The story revolves around 2 teenaged girls who are best friends - one is rich and beautiful and somewhat experienced with the opposite sex and the other who is no-so-rich, sees herself as average and is totally inexperienced with anything having to do with boys.  Maddy, the no-so-rich girl is swept off her feet by a charming and handsome twenty-something after a night on the town with her wealthy classmates.  Although warned that he is the devil in disguise by her BFF, Aimee, Maddy cannot resist the pull of attraction she feels towards Mr. Charming.

In an attempt to explore this new and exciting relationship, she lies to her parents and joins Mr. Charming on vacation in a tropical paradise. After one too many drinks, she wakes up with a splitting headache with no recollection of the events of the previous night.  It doesn't take long for her to figure out that she has been kidnapped and later discovers her captor is the leader of a large human-trafficking ring.  With little hope of being found, Maddy must decide if she want to live to remember the horrors she is sure to experience or if she wants to die before it begins.

MISTAKES brings a slew of life lessons to the forefront of the minds of the reader especially in regards to lying and realizing that your parents are trying to protect you when they set boundaries - not ruin your life.  What is potentially at risk for the innocent and naive oblivious to the evils of the world?

I purchased MISTAKES with the hopes of a decent and entertaining read.  What I got far exceeded my expectations and I am eagerly awaiting the 2nd book in the trilogy.  I can't wait to see what happens next!  This is a great choice if you are looking for something dark and intense with some romantic elements.

As a mother of a teenage daughter and a former teenager myself (seriously, regardless of what my daughter believes, I was once a teen), I try to teach my daughter about making wise decisions. It is clearly a "do as I say, not as I've done" type of teaching as I made huge, huge, horrible mistakes growing up.

This book is about mistakes and the consequences of those split second decisions. It started very slow and I was discouraged. However, about 1/4 of the way through, I really liked the story. It had all the right elements for a good book and I was genuinely surprised that I was disappointed that it ended.

I was totally enthralled by this book! So much that I got out of bed when I finished reading it and spent the next hour looking for when the second book is supposed to be released. Unfortunately I couldn't find any information. If you are looking for a book that wraps the story up in a happy ending this isn't your book. If you are looking for a dark read that sucks you into the thriller and what will happen next then this is for you.

Book #2 isnt written and book one came out in 2011. Wasted book, though good, its a cliffhanger with no ending

I am giving this book a 1 star rating as I read it and it was a good book 3 stars maybe 3.5, but as of yet 3years later book two isnt out.
Therefore it is a wasted read....a cliffhanger with no ending...and not in a good way.

When I began reading this book, I thought it would be a simple tale of two long-time best friends, Aimee and Maddison (Maddie), seniors in high school going through growing pains. One girl more experienced, and the second falling in love for the first time.
The authors began the book with the present day and then take the reader back in time as the two friends are making plans to deceive their parents and head off for spring break on Padre Island. As the girls arrive in party town USA, they meet up with a male friend from their hometown. Making their way through the circuit of parties, they end up down a dark beach and things begin to go terribly wrong. The three end up kidnapped and taken across the border into Mexico. Aimee manages to escape, but is forced to leave Maddy behind as she attempts to thwart the kidnappers and go for help.
Maddie is transferred into a different vehicle where she discovers another body in the trunk with her. Fingers touch and a desperate human connection is made as the two await their fate. Maddie is locked in a dark cell with Dalton McKenny, the second person in the car trunk. The two become friends as Dalton forces Maddie to tell stories of her family in an effort to help keep her linked to reality in the darkened cell. The two provide each other with the courage it will take if they are to survive their capture.
The first part of the story ends with Maddie held captive in a crate, as she is shipped to an unknown destination while Dalton is ransomed to his family. At their point of separation, Dalton and Maddie are led to believe that the other is dead.
The book then shifts from Maddie to Aimee, who has managed to elude her kidnappers. She is spotted lying dehydrated by the Mexican authorities on a deserted Mexican roadside.
Life is not easy for Aimee as she struggles to re-enter society with the guilt of having left Maddie behind. Her upper-crust mother sees her ordeal as a stepping stone to a Hollywood career and shows little sympathy toward her daughter or Maddie’s family.
The book ends with Dalton McKenny showing up on the Turner’s front door stoop with a message from Maddie and a vow to obtain justice.
Reading on a Kindle has an advantage. It takes a little effort to skip to the end of the book, as I was tempted to do on many occasions (I am one of those who has the horrible habit of reading the first and last chapter, and then every word in between.) The only disappointment I had with this book was as I was nearing the end, I realized that either the book was going to have a very fast ending – or I was NOT going to be finding out Maddie’s fate in this book.
This is fiction that reads like non-fiction; and the story might be one of the headlines we read when we pick up the newspaper today.
The authors pick you up and drop you down right in the middle of the two young lives where you befriend them, love them, empathize with them, and feel their pain and torment, and then their loss.
I laughed and then I cried. I was held captive by the words on the pages. The only thing I did not like about the book is that the sequel was not already in my hands to read. It is driving me crazy and I absolutely sit in anticipation for the next book and truly hope the authors will let me review it.
This book has love, suspense, and drama and I am giving it double thumbs up. If I had more thumbs, it would get more.

This book grabed me and held me still in my seat till I finied it. Page by every page I read, I cried, I laughed. I couldn't stop reading and by the last page I was dying for more.
The topic of this book is about an every day occurrence and a topic I think everyone needs to know more about. Kidnapping and sex trafficking rings are a hard subject to read about, but this book is stunning in the way it is written.

The Characters

Maddison (Maddy) - She is our main character. She is a lot stronger than she thinks she is. I connected right away with Maddy, she doesn't see herself in the light that everyone else does. She doesn't see how much she is loved. She see's herself as a girl that always follows the rules and never has any fun. But, one mistake changes everything for her and things aren't as they seem.

Aimee- Is Maddy's best friend. Aimee is the yang to Maddy's Yin so to say. She is the polar opposite but the complete each other in their sisterly ways. Aimee is the girl who has the money and loves to party unlike Aimee. She helps Maddy come up with all the schemes to get Maddy what she really wants.

Dalton - I fell in love with Dalton from the moment he showed up on the pages of the book. He is so strong and so sweet to Maddy. He is the one that helps her through so much. And also gives her a very special gift and Maddy and him share it together! (trying not to give way to much away.) Dalton is a very handsome, fit young man, that is way older than Maddy.
Jack - What can I say about Jack that wont give to much away. Hmm there isn't much to say except he is very handsome and Maddy falls for him right away! He ends up being Maddy's first love and I will say this when you first fall in love it clouds your vision to the imperfect only showing the perfection of the other person.

I give the story and the cover a 5 star rating...

The cover fit the book perfectly! Love it. I was intrigued just by looking at it!

I can't wait for more of this story. I need to know what happens next. I have never cried so much reading a book in my life, but this book is amazing for that. To be able to bring those emotions out of a reader makes the writers a pair of great writers!

Pull up a comfy seat, get a drink and a box (or two) of tissues, because once you begin reading, this story will captivate you, and not let you go until the last page forces you to put it down!
As they say, everyone makes mistakes “…we’re only human. Some of our mistakes are small, like when you stay up late studying for a test that you end up failing anyway because of exhaustion. Others are so catastrophic they change your life. Forever…”

Maddison, or Maddy to her friends, is just an average High School Senior (if a little less prone to typical teen rebellion than most eighteen year olds) until she meets a guy -- a gorgeous guy who is really into her, and seems to like the very things about her that usually make her a social misfit. To make him happy, she makes the fateful decision to step way outside of her “box” and sneaks off on Spring Break with her best friend. Instead of finding a wild week of fun in the sun, the girls find themselves trapped on the road to hell on earth.

Dalton is a successful, thirty-nine year old executive pursuing international interests for his family’s corporation south of the border, and doing his best in a failed marriage. When the trip abroad goes terribly wrong, it lands him in hell next to an angel, costs him his freedom, dignity, ability to protect himself, and worst of all for him, renders his attempts at protecting her futile.

Honest, thought provoking and deeply emotional, this story will keep you up way past your bed time, infect your waking thoughts for days, and leave you begging for more. Not for the faint of heart, this highly accessible, mature story takes an unflinching look into the life altering journey of these highly appealing characters caught in the all-too-real web of international human-trafficking. Maddy and Dalton’s remarkable alliance and tenderly romantic friendship, forged under the most soul-consuming of circumstances, is as bittersweet as it is uplifting. Hayward and Holder have created a compelling modern story of love, betrayal and self-discovery that manages to be as entertaining as it is eye-opening.

Mistakes by A.M. Hayward and L.J. Holder is a very shocking, thrilling and horrifying story all in one. I found myself rushing through the book just to find out what would happen to Maddison.[return][return]When I first started reading this book, I strongly suspected that it would be one of those basic YA books where two best friends get drunk and something goes wrong: Either one of them dies in a car accident, one of them gets pregnant, one of them steals, etc. Mistakes is NOTHING like that. I was shocked and moved to tears quickly as the story progresses. [return][return]There was a point in the story where I simply had to stop reading it to find tissues. These authors did an amazing job capturing the reality of the situation. My heart went out to to Maddie in this book.[return][return]—spoilers—[return][return]Now what is this book about? It’s about a girl named Maddison who just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. She is very innocent/naive/impressionable - and she does not think anything wrong when an older rich pretty boy takes quick interest in her. Her best friend Aimee - who happens to be slightly more mature, at first suspects that the older guy is using Maddie for sex, but when he doesn’t make sexual moves on her best friend, she accepts that he has changed his ways. They all quickly agree to run of Padre Island for spring break. [return][return]—End Spoiler—[return][return]I do not think it is important for me to discuss what actually happens in the book, but it is an eye opener and it was not what I was expecting at all. I am looking forward to the sequel.[return][return]Now, my basic question- will teens like it?[return][return]I think so. I think teens will be shocked while reading it too. This novel brings up important topics that need to be discussed. The book might be fiction, but the subject matter is very real.[return][return]Can be read here: http://onreading.tumblr.com/

Oh my. This is dark - terrifying - horrifying. But also really good. As a firmly middle-class girl surrounded by rich kids, Maddison has always been an observer - but when she meets Jack she wants to start participating. She's tired of being restricted by her parents beliefs of what money does to people and she enlists her best friend's help to sneak away for a spring break on Padre Island. Things quickly turn for the worst though as Maddison and Aimee are kidnapped to be sold by human-traffickers.

At the beginning of the book I found myself questioning things. I thought Jack seemed a bit flat as a character and didn't really get the pull Maddison felt for him. The kidnappers seemed to make really big mistakes that were quite convenient for the storyline. But then, Maddison was thrown in a jail cell with Dalton and I forgot all my complaints and just let myself be swept up by the traumatizing story.

This is no happily ever after and you will be screaming for the second book in the trilogy as soon as you finish the first, but this is a book that you don't want to miss. Just be ready with a big box of tissues - because this is not for the light of heart.

I’m pretty sure I’ve never read a book like this. I am one to usually read happy, fluffy books and the darkest I ever go is vampire and werewolf stories. This book was intense. I had a hard time with it because it is so real and there was some moments that were hard to read.

This book was amazing though. The writing was so perfect that I was enthralled the whole time. I had to know what was coming next and I had to continue on to know how Maddy was. I usually don’t like books where women are abused, but this one was something that needed to be read. So often we’re quick to ignore things that happen to people because we don’t want to know it. Human trafficking is real and this novel made it even more so for me.

The authors made me love Maddy in the beginning and weaved this warm happy story from the start. Everything was good and light and fun, and then it wasn’t. Things got bad suddenly and though I knew it was coming from reading the synopsis, I was not prepared.

This book was hard and it will be hard for anyone to get through, but it is worth the read. It reminded me a lot of the movie Taken, but it seemed more real to me. I was drawn in to this book a lot more than I was into that movie.

The ending was awful though. Ok, it actually was pretty brilliant, but I have to wait for the next book to see what happens. I hate being left in suspense. This is definitely a must read, but only if you can handle tough situations. I wouldn’t recommend this for the faint of heart or weak minded. This is an emotional book. I cried, a lot.

I can’t wait to get my hands on book two.

This was an intense read. If you're a mother (or even a father) you will never want your daughter to go out after reading this. In fact, I think my daughter is grounded until she's 20. Maybe 25. I had to start reading another book during this book so I could take a break from the mental anguish I felt for the characters.

This is a story of two 18 year old senior high school students, Maddy and Aimee, who go on spring break. They end up being kidnapped by human traffickers on their first night out.

Aimee is able to break free and escape, while Maddy is forced to do whatever her captors say. The only saving grace for Maddy against rape by these thugs is that she's a virgin and Javier (the man running the trafficking ring) knows he can get a good price for her.

Maddy ends up being a cell mate with Dalton. Dalton was kidnapped and is being held for ransom. Dalton and Maddy form a bond and keep each other afloat when they are at their lowest. They swear to find each other when and if they can ever get out.

Maddy ends up being sold and Dalton... Well, you'll just have to read and see for yourself.

This ends with Aimee trying everything she can to find Maddy. Aimee will not give up and will do anything no matter what.

There is a sequel in the works for this and I am definitely picking it up once it's out. I am dying to find out what happened to Maddy. This book moved me in such a way that a book hasn't done before. It was dark and gritty to the end. An emotional journey that will leave you feeling raw and exhausted.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.
Sometimes you make a mistake and it just goes away, healing itself like a small cut, but other mistakes fester and grow, deepening beyond the flesh and reaching into the soul. Those second kind don't go away, but when put together into the right order make for one amazing story.

While parts of the beginning of the book were highly predictable I was deeply impressed with the amount of thought that went into each step in the process of the plot. Each action was so carefully planned out that I would almost believe that one of the villains had written everything himself with the idea of pulling his readers in as he follows the lives of his victims.

It would be one of those deep, wound-causing mistake to pass up this book or any of the others that would follow.

Note: Though this book was a free gift from the author, the content of my review was in no way influenced by the gifting. The book speaks for itself and my review would have been worded just this way even if I'd gone out and bought it. I also give bonus points for Text To Speech enabling on Kindle format.... but that also wasn't a factor in the above review.

I received a free ebook version of Mistakes through the Librarything.com Early Reviewers program.

Maddie is a naive, 18-year old high school senior, who longs for romance and a life different from her own. She meets Jack, an older, good-looking guy who seems to be the prince she'd always wanted. Although her friend, Aimee, warns her about Jack and his reputation with women, Aimee supports her friend's decision to pursue a relationship with him.

Together they plan a week in South Padre that will give her the opportunity to spend some time with Jack. Lying to her parents, the girls escape for what they hope will be an exciting, romantic adventure.

Their week turns out to be nothing like they planned. Jack turns out to be worse than either of them could have imagined and the girls find themselves kidnapped about to be sold as human merchandise.

I was somewhat disappointed with the ending of the book, getting to a "what happened?" moment and then faced with a notice that I had to wait for the second installment.

A quick read, good flow, interesting storyline.

Teenage Maddison, out for adventure and the chance to increase her social standing, falls for a suave older man at a party. He convinces her to lie to her parents so they can spend spring break away together, but then it all goes horribly wrong. Jack is not the man he appears to be, and suddenly Maddy and her friend Aimee find themselves held captive, about to be sold off as slaves across the border.

Maddy and Aimee came across as quite self-centred, and that made them reasonably realistic portrayals of teenagers! My favourite character, though, was Dalton, Maddy's fellow captive. Their relationship was a highlight of the book, and one I was cheering for.

I read an advanced copy of this book, and thought it got off to a bit of a slow start, but by the end I was really keen to see what would happen next. I really hope Dalton can come to the rescue!

I almost don't even know what to say about this novel. It has been on my to read list for awhile because I knew how much I would love it and want more. It kept my attention every second as I read it in less than a day. I might have even shed as many tears as the main character, Maddy. Okay, maybe not that many, but a lot. As a writing team, Hayward and Holder are brilliant. The story is poignant fictionalized story of things that are sadly really happening today. I hope a sequel is still in the works as I would love to hear more from Maddy, Amiee, and maybe even Dalton's point of view.

This was kind of good. I wasn't sure of it in the beginning. I was just waiting for a serious kidnapping and we had to read a good few chapters of annoying teen drama. I was getting bored. But then the kidnapping did happen and it got better, and interesting. I liked Dalton, but the relationship with Maddy didn't feel natural. I also think that the chapters with Aimee narrating were unnecessary. The final chapter would have been enough. I was intrigued by the end and wanted to read the second book, but couldn't find it. Is there a second book?

I don't feel like I can rate this book. The story fascinated me and I had to find out what happened to Maddie, she was kidnapped while on Spring Break with her friends. The abuse that she undergoes is horrific. She lives through mental, physical, and sexual abuse. The language used was hard for me to read. The book is full of profanity and degradation.

This is a book that is not to be read lightly. It is well written. The writing borders on brilliant, the subject matter stinks.

the reading was strangely up and down and not due to the plot which was a standard capture and confine type book, some of the story and the character's reactions throughout was realistic but a lot of it didn't seem dark enough for what it was trying to portrait. the most darkly riveting parts in the book sometimes turned idiotically tame due to this flaw. it doesn't make my favorites list not by a long shot.

It says there is a second book at the end of this one, called Trapped... But I can't find it anywhere?

This was brutally realistic, but it felt rushed and more like a recounting, like a newspaper article telling what happened. I didn't feel any emotion other than some fear. It was a good story and educational but I think the emotion didn't come through.

Crazy thing is that this story is real life for so many young women. Unfortunately most women are not so lucky as to be held captive with an undercover agent whose fallen for her. Just tell me when the next comes out and I'm there.

Loved the book. It's been years now and still no 2nd book. I guess that means the Trilogy is not going to happen.
