Susan and Michael Card answer your questions about the practical responsibilities of homeschooling, including choosing curriculum, teaching children at different levels, and planning creative and educational lessons.
I will be putting together a homeschool curriculum for my daughter over the next few months, so I have been eager to read all the homeschooling books I can get my hands on. I read this one because my family has enjoyed the "Sleep Sound in Jesus" album and this book gives a Christian perspective on homeschooling. In general, I found most of the chapters to be "preaching to the choir" so to speak since I have been committed to homeschooling since day one. I think there are probably too many chapters about why it is important to homeschool while being Christ-centered although I do enjoy that the authors stress how important biblical principles are. The book does tend to get a bit preachy at times, though I didn't disagree with it. It just was not what I was particularly looking to read in a book such as this. There was not as much practical advice as I wanted. At this point, I am very overwhelmed with the organization and day-to-day schedules and lessons, etc. I did find some good nuggets throughout the book. There are several books I plan to order and certain curriculums I plan to research. I had not thought seriously about including foreign languages from the get-go, but the book's brief discussion on the value of learning Latin convinced me that I should look into that (along with Spanish of course).
It's a quick read, so that's nice. I definitely didn't walk away with as much information as I was expecting. The personal stories are uplifting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Part devotional, part parenting book, part spiritual encouragement and part homeschool resource, this book was greatly motivating to me! I snagged it off my mom's shelf, and since I was homeschooled throughout my entire education, it was extra special to glean wisdom from a book that also aided my mother in homeschooling me. The entire first half of the book is great for every Christian parent to read-- not just homeschoolers.
While some of the information is outdated, this is still an amazing book, and I am reluctant to return it to my mother's bookshelves before I skim through it again!
This book surprised me! It was beautifully written. It would be interesting to hear from these parents nowadays and see where they land on a few things, and maybe we’d be more aligned today as opposed to in 1997; however, I still give this a full four stars despite some theological differences.
