Als je Amerikaanse politici zoals Hillary Clinton of onze vaderlandse pers zou moeten geloven, ligt Mordor ergens geprangd tussen Irak en Afghanistan. Het wordt op de atlas aangeduid met Iran. Nochtans is de beschaving van dit rijk duizenden jaren oud. En blijven haar cultuur, religie en mythes doorleven tot op vandaag. Ja, zelfs in het zogenaamd islam-fundamentalistisch regime. Interessant om lezen was dat ook het nationalistische denken uit de Europese Verlichting Iran heeft bereikt. En vooral dat het met het verdrijven van de sjah niet is uitgestorven, maar gebruikt wordt om het land aaneen te smeden. Of dat de soenni-stroming in Iran vroeger gangbaar was, niet het sjiïtisme.

Uiteraard is het boekje veel te beperkt om in detail Iran te leren kennen, maar het zet aan tot meer. Een aperitiefhapje dat doet teruggrijpen naar de menukaart.
