There were parts of this book that I loved rather than just liked, and there were times when I thought I might give it four stars. I didn't because it falls short in a few places; I'd have liked to see more of April's relationship with her friend Jenny, for example, and it seems to end rather too quickly after all the fantastic build-up. It needed more of a climax, with more jeopardy, and a greater effort from the characters to deal with it. The characters are not one-dimensional, but in the cases of some of them, I'd have liked to see their depths explored more. I suppose what I'm really saying is that I wanted this book to be longer. That said, it's still a good book; I found the writing style engaging, the story disturbing and fascinating, the characters interesting all in their own way, and the setting vividly realised.
