The Warrior King #2

Loved By a Warrior

Rate this book
Donna Fletcher returns to the Scottish Highlands with Loved by a Warrior, the second sensuous story in her magnificent Warrior King series, continuing the thrilling saga of four brave warriors destined to return the legendary king of Scotland to his throne.

In Loved by a Warrior, a noble Highland knight is enchanted by a beautiful lady who is cursed to bring doom to anyone who loves her. Fans of Karen Ranney and other masters of emotionally rich Scottish historical romance novels should flock to Fletcher’s thrilling adventure of the heart.

It has been prophesied that four men, raised as brothers, will bring Scotland back to her rightful glory. It is time for the second to take up his sword.

When a Highland warrior fights, he fights for honor. And when Reeve MacAlpin sees a beautiful stranger surrounded by bandits, he does not hesitate to do the honorable thing and dispatch her would-be assailants. But at her first grateful touch, his instinct to keep her safe is surpassed by a longing to keep her close . . . and to fulfill her every desire.

For as long as Tara can remember, she has lost the people she loves most—a curse that is sure to doom anyone who shows her kindness. She can never love without bringing death—and though her powerful Highlander champion tempts her beyond imagining, she fears that to give herself to him means his downfall. And yet she knows she must tempt Fate . . . for to resist him would be just as unthinkable.

As my second book by Donna Fletcher, her historical romances are very sweet and easy to read. From the moment Reeve and Tara met, Reeve wants to protect Tara and starts falling for her. Tara, though, is determined to never love again because she's cursed to be a "death bride." That means any man she loves or has a relationship will die. Reeve promises to bring Tara back to his clan to start over, but there is an undeniable attraction between them. Tara pushes Reeve away, but he's impossible to resist. I really enjoyed the development with their romance and how Reeve was determined to show Tara that he wasn't scared of her curse. Curses in historical romances are fun and I really enjoyed how this one played out. Tara didn't want people to know about it because she was treated so horribly by her old clan because of it. While some parts did slow down, overall I enjoyed this. I loved Reeve's relationship with his brothers and I'm excited to see where this series goes next!

If I didn't just read book 1, this book might have done better in my eyes. But having just read book 1, this book reads almost exactly like its predecessor, just with different characters. The plot is similar, they started the book with a "journey", where Reeve and Tara traveled the unfriendly terrain alone on foot and often ended up sleeping in each other's arms. They became attracted to each other and were often amazed at how well "they fit together". Reeve was taking Tara to his clan so that she could have a home. This is what Duncan did in the first book too, taking Mercy to his people. These are situations and escriptions used in the first book and honestly other than Tara being the death bride, I see no real differences between this book and the first book.

I quickly skim-read the book as a result. I hope the 3rd and 4th books are a little more original than this one.

I found the premise of the curse interesting at first, but then the story got repetitive and nothing was happening for the majority of it. I didn't care for the main couple.

Tara was a young girl when an old lady put a curse on her. She has lost two potential husbands since that time and is now considered a Death Bride. Her wealthy father sends her and a bride price unescorted to wed King Kenneth. While on her journey she gets in trouble with three crooks that want her bride price and are afraid to touch her or they might die. It is at this time that Reeve, a Highlander watches from behind a tree and decides to save her. He decides to take her home to the family keep as she wants to disappear from her past. She tells him that she is a Death Bride and he tells her that he doesn't believe in curses, and he is always right.
They have a few close calls with the kings men who are out to find her, even though Reeve doesn't know about her father's promise to the King.
He gets her to the family keep so she can start a new life in a nearby cottage. Of course Tara and Reeve have coupled but not professed any love for each other as Tara is scared that the curse will kill him.
One day Reeve's brother Trey is brought to the keep by a neighboring clan and he is near death. Tara blames the curse for his attack from soldiers.
Tara's father is on her trail and shows up at the keep to claim his daughter for the King. She tells him that she has coupled with Reeve and she could be with Reeve's child. Tara's father demands that they be wed immediately so that Reeve can die before the marriage is consummated. They do so but her father isn't satisfied and tries again to steal her.
When he returns a second time, Tara explains that the King doesn't really want her, but only her bride price which she has given to Reeve. Since he has much money, he decides to give the King the money and tell him that his daughter didn't exist. Although Tara is hurt, she and Reeve go on but never expressing their love for each other. One night Tara has a dream which seems so real. It is of her sitting near a stream with her friend Stone. There is a message that tells her that love conquers everything and the curse will be dissolved. The brothers go in search of a local man who has powers. The minute he enters the keep, Tara knows exactly who it is; her old childhood friend Stone. He explains to her that the woman that put the curse on her was his Aunt. She beat him within inches of his life many times and he always came through with love.
The curse now is over and Tara and Reeve along with his three brothers move on with their original mission which was to find the new King of Scotland.
In the end it turns out that Reeve is indeed the new King and Tara wants to be with him forever.

This was a really nice and easy read.

Reeve and Tara.
I liked this book, I did! There were just a few things I hated!
When they met, she'd been travelling for a while with some male "protectors", and have just been ambushed, by some bad guys. Along comes Reeve to save the day (yawn, who didn't see that one coming). Tara's is wearing a red velvet dress, (the one on the cover) AND NOTHING ELSE! I never hear mention of petticoats, stays, corset, stockings, just the dress! In the middle of winter! It's snowing! But, hey I can let that slide.
I didn't like it that she was also connected to (fake) King Kenneth, to me that just too much coincidence, and I get the feeling that the remaining 2 books or 2 herione's, are also going to have some sort of dealings with him also.

Love story wise: Yeah... okay. He fights his feelings for her, blah, blah, blah. She's cursed, blah, blah, blah. He no longer cares, blah, blah, blah. He must taste her once more, and then he'll... OH, too late, he's IN LOVE!

Sex story wise: Once Reeve made up his mind, that he was going to sleep with Tara, he just sort of got on with it. Nothing really exciting, and from all the talk about curse's and death, and "one time only and then he'd die", it wasn't exactly EXPLOSIVE! If I was expectig to die, I'd make it the BEST TIME OF MY LIFE.

Over all, 2.7 stars. I've given the benefit of the doubt and rounded up!

I love revisiting characters from previous books I have loved and meeting new ones in the process. Donna Fletcher does not disappoint in the second book in this series. A totally different hero and heroine in this book, but I was captivated just as much as in the first one.

Too much repetition of inner thoughts and feelings of two main characters, which seldom varied. Skimmed a large portion. Won't read others in the series.

I wanted to like this book more but I just couldn’t. It was extremely similar to the first book and rather drawn out. I had to stop and start this book three separate times.

Unselfish love—a gift from the heart--is all that can take away the curse that was placed on Tara many years ago.

Raven-haired, lavender eyed Tara, known as the “death bride” seeks a safe haven to live her life in solitude where she will bring hurt to no one. While traveling she is beset by robbers. She stands her ground ready to accept her fate THEN the alpha-male Reeve MacAlpin comes.

A warrior, tall, lean, muscular, Reeve wields his lethal sword with exquisite grace and unerring accuracy. He takes Tara to the MacAlpin clan where there is no living in solitude. As she promised, she gives Reeve her money (almost all of it) which was “a bride’s price”, a virtual fortune. The MacAlpin protection is given in “friendship”. She guards against love because death comes to those who get too close to her. She cares for the people of the clan and tries to hold herself apart from them so they will not die, yet she lives in fear of what might happen to them.

The MacAlpin clan’s mission is to see the rightful King of Scotland back on the throne. Reeve and his three chosen brothers, all mighty warriors, take note of the increased presence of the corrupt King Kenneth’s soldiers in their area. They sense the time draws near for action, yet realize there is something unusual about the often undisciplined actions of the soldiers. What finally comes to light sifts action into high gear for more than one reason. Tara’s old life intrudes making twists and turns in the plot that keep the reader turning pages.

The Picts, a unique people of mystery whom many fear, bring their skills to help the MacAlpins when they bring one of the brothers home who was seriously wounded by the soldiers. Their help and wisdom not only helps the fight against the enemy but also shows the way for Reeve and Tara as they, finally, with trust and honesty, reach out for love with courage..

Donna Fletcher is a fantastic story teller. She weaves history, superstition, customs of the time and the people, humor, and love into Loved by a Warrior. She shows Reeve with a sense of humor when he says “I’m always right”, but she also reveals that his unwavering efforts and good judgment proves the statement is true more often than not. He never loses sight of his goals.. Ms. Fletcher weaves in some poignant truths like “trust and honesty” are needed for a good marriage and advise to live with “courage not fear”. Her non-obtrusive writing style slips readers into that unique time in Scotland and lets them share a memorable vicarious experience with the characters. The remarkable love that is willing to give all makes Loved by a Warrior special.

When Reeve, finds a lone woman surrounded by thieves, defenseless and outnumbered, knowing he can't leave her to their mercy, he comes in and saves her from them, even not knowing who she truly is or the danger she may pose to him. Tara, has had to live a very lone existence, but when she meets Reeve, she knows that her life will be different. After being cursed when she was a young girl, she has lost two husbands, and has been labeled the "Death Bride" and having been forced out of her clan, and her family. Now on her way to marry again at her father's demand, she is accosted by thieves wanting her bride price, and is stunned when a handsome and very capable warrior saves her. Even though there is a instant 'spark' that fly's between them, she knows she needs to maintain a distance in order to save his life, but as their journey progresses and they draw even closer to each other, Tara will have to put her faith in their love, since it will be the only thing that could save Reeve from certain death...Loved By A Warrior is the second in the Warrior King series, and I think I just fell in love with this one. After seeing Reeve and Tara in A Warrior's Promise, I was very glad to read their story, and it was even better than I expected. From the first paragraph I was hooked. I really like the connection you see from the beginning, and even there were a couple aspects of the story that could be repetitious it was a very likable and enjoyable read. Reeve, is very protective of Tara and doesn't believe in curses, and just believe they are a myth, but he has a lot of faith in his love for her, I found him to be very appealing, especially as the story progressed. Tara I liked in the beginning and the end, but I think the one thing I didn't like was that she was too selfless at times, and it became repetitious at times, but I really liked at how the story plays out in the end, and I found myself fully satisfied, and wishing it hadn't ended, and I am very much looking forward to reading the last one in the series, especially if its anything like the two books I have read so far. A completely endearing and loveable story with characters that will just win your heart over!!!

Tara doesn't believe she has a chance for love in her life. She is what's called a Death Bride. She was cursed, long ago, by a witch. If any man loves her --if any marries her-- he dies. She's been ostracized by her clan and sent away by her father to try to marry again. But she is accosted by thieves, hoping to steal her bride price, along the way. Stalwart Highland warrior, Reeve, steps in to save her. She offers him all of her money and jewels to help her find a safe and secluded place to live, so she can make a new start.

Reeve doesn't believe in curses. And despite himself, he starts falling for the selfless and beautiful woman who he rescued. He decides to bring her to his own clan to make a life. Tara feels an attraction toward Reeve, but she fights it with all she has... sure that if something develops between them, it will mean his death. So the book basically goes like this: Reeve wants Tara. Tara wants Reeve. They start to come together. She pulls away. Rinse and repeat. Over and over. And over. Tara believes she is sacrificing her happiness for Reeve's life. He loves her all the more. She retreats further away... and so on.

It's a sweet & innocuous Highlander love story. Typical clichés, about how they fit together, were made for each other. A lot of pining, talk of honor, and whatnot. There's a little bit of a political backdrop --It seems that either Reeve or one of his three "brothers" is the True King of Scotland. Apparently, each brother gets a book and the secret is revealed at the end. But it almost felt like an afterthought, instead of the plot thread designed to weave a series together. 3 stars.

Okay book, I'm liking this series only because I am dying to know which of the four is the True King but I swear I wanted to slap Tara through most of the book, if this girl cried one more time about her fake curse I was going to throw my kindle across the room in frustration. But Reeve was awesome. I enjoyed the first book far more, the adventures were more exciting and the female character was quiet the gutsy little woman where as Tara just irritated me beyond reason. This series is not as steamy as my other favorite highlander books but an interesting read and still fun.

For me it was boring..
Things are repetitive from first book..
King's daughter... King's intended...
Things really didn't make much sense at times.. king's intended travelling without escort...how did wagon move without horse etc...
They fit perfectly..this statement was repeated so many times in first book and then in this.. I felt like I am trying new clothes..
In both books heroines save Rand, the little boy.. and both the couples go holydaying on the Pict land.
The hero's love was not unconditional..no.. he only wanted to have Tara, the heroine in his bed. He wasn't really concerned about easing her worries... He is tooo over confident..and boasting all time..
The heroine is scared and with good reason, for she doesn't know otherwise.. she is strong and courageous. And she falls easily in the love.. she fell three times in love..
So..yes.
I have read better..
Though some things were good and the only reason I am giving 2 stars is, the story line is refreshing..
And I think I know who the king is..😉

Never figured out why Reeve fell for Tara other than her purple-violet eyes and a snug fit. Might as well make love to some dyed buckskin. Reeve was too good, the closeness of the four brothers and their ribbing was awesome, really enjoyed the brief appearances of the mother and the "punishments" she devised when they were kids. LOL! Some "secrets" are very guessable. Was really, really annoyed by all of Tara's blowing hot and cold on Reeve. One moment she is all over him, the next she is shoving him away because she is a death bride. This goes on and on in a loop until she becomes just tiresome and you want them to get under the sheets and do it already. Might have been enjoyable with less of Tara and more of the McAlpin clan. Want to see how Bryce and Trey fall! :D I want it to be Bryce and Willa!

There were parts of this story that I liked just as much/ if not more than the first book. However, for the last 100 pages or so I was so sick and tired of Tara and "the curse" being her excuse for pushing Reeve away and fighting him. It just lasted too long. But it also didn't help that again we have a hero who won't tell his heroine the trust and makes her just agree to love him, marry him and be with him while not knowing who he is. Which really felt like a slap after the hero had thought earlier how important it was to him that they have honesty and trust as the foundation of their relationship. Refusing to tell her any more than every person in that clan already has to suspect is not being honest or trusting. The solution would be if he only agreed to tell her if he is or isn't the king but no more and doing this off page so we the reader don't know.

This book is a CLASSIC highlander romance! I adore a journey through the wilderness!

We have a fierce heroine in Tara, who knows how to fight, but is stifled by the fact that she's known as a "death bride". This means that anyone who falls in love with Tara is destined to die. Enter Reeve, who rescues her, and is instantly interested. But they can't be together or he'll die!!!!

I loved Reeve's clan, and the found family that they provide Tara. There's a twist about 60% in that had me gasping. The third act was fun, surprising, and satisfying.

Gotta thank Donna Fletcher for reawakening my interest in highlander romances!

Trigger warnings: side character is wounded, bedridden and having difficulty recovering, assault, fighting

the first half of the book was interesting and engaging but the second half bored the heck out of me. tara kept going on about her curse and not wanting reeve to love her that i'm amazed at reeve's patience with tara's superstitions. i was so fed up with her being so superstitious that she is putting the best man ever for her at an arm's length because of her curse. then the curse set in, with all the danger put to reeve's clan and i felt their relationship-building was compromised. i stopped at chapter 23 and skipped to chapter 33 to read. the end about the king felt familiar, as if Donna has written a similar plot in her other series before. i just realized that her plots are repetitive.

I liked the story. I liked the characters and I liked their chemistry. I didn't think it was at all like first book in the story like others reviewed, and I didn't find Tara to be too absorbed in her issue as a death bride. I felt she had a very real fear and the author did a great job of not dwelling on it too much. I was worried I wasn't going to like this book due to the reviews that said she needed to shut up already, and I get it (if you sleep with him he's pretty much done for regardless of marriage, right?) but everyone has their dumb moments and that was hers. I still liked the book.

I really do wish there was the option for half stars as this is a solid 3.5. Some of the dialog was a bit inane what with the constant back and forth about the curse. The rest slips into telling rather than showing a bit more than I'd like, but it's tolerable. The characters are interesting although not quite fully developed. They're not flat and one-dimensional though, which is a relief. I did enjoy reading this.
