I'm not even much of a reader but I've read this twice. The writing is so vibrant - I really feel like I've stepped into the characters life. Excellent story.

Geraldine Brooks has become one of my favorite authors. For 11 years she was a correspondent for the WSJ, serving much of the time in the Middle East. I think it's her background as a correspondent that makes this, her first novel, seem like she was there. It is the story of one year in the life of an English village, where the plague takes root. The story is based on real life events that took place in Eyam, Derbyshire in 1666. There is a village museum still present in Eyam. A decision by the minister closes off the village so that the plague will not spread beyond the village. Every family in the small village loses family members. In the end the disease is contained to just the village and after a year is considered eradicated. Relationships are forever changed. The relationships between the minister, his wife, and their household helper Anna form the core of the story.

I'm currently reading this for a microbiology class. I have found it more interesting than I thought. My only challenge is the assignment in which I have to write a "new creative ending", so hard, if anyone has any ideas let me know.

I liked this quite a bit. Be sure to read the author's notes at the end. About a town that voluntarily quaretines itself. some sex

Interesting read. Some of the author's concepts seem somewhat far fetched.
At times the main character appeared to be more of a 21st century woman than someone in the 17th century.

A heart wrenching and thought provoking story of one woman's survival in a plague inflicted village.

Beautifully written and captivating, despite a rather grim plot.

I enjoyed this book up until the very end. The book spans the year of 1666. The historic lives are interesting. The details kept me reading and the development of plot and characters all kept me turning pages. The end seemed too easy to me. Moving the main character to a totally different location seemed like picking up a different book. Other than this, I would read any other book by this author. I didn't mind the love interest fizzling out but how it was resolved was a stretch for me.

Depressing. Not that I thought that a book about the plague would be a fun read. Just didn't like it much.
