Get Organized and Get Ahead Let organizing expert Jennifer Ford Berry , author of the best-selling book Organize Now! A Week-by-Week Guide to Simplify Your Space and Your Life , show you how to get ahead in your career and personal finances by getting organized. INSIDE YOU'LL FIND: Learn how to create a step-by-step plan that will help you achieve your organizational goals.
Read it in a day - it's a long list of 52 things to do to get organized. The flow is a bit clunky and the actionable items are a bit weirdly titled and spaced. It also has weekly, monthly, and annual action plans, but they are laid out week by week so it would be a challenge to carry out all of the recommendations.
"Organize Now! Your Money, Business & Career" is a week-by-week guide to reach your goals. It is written by organizing expert Jennifer Ford Berry. There are a lot of people out there that need help organizing, and therefore there are many books on the topic. I put this book as okay, because out of the organizing and decluttering books I've read, this one didn't motivate as much as say those by Don Aslett. (Aslett is probably my favorite author on getting rid of clutter and getting organized, I highly recommend his books.)
First, I didn't care for the binding that much. While it is a hardback book, it has a spiral type binding. I didn't care for how it felt turning the pages. I much prefer standard book binding.
Next comes the actual book. Yes, there are a lot of good organizing tips here. However, that is all they really are. Tips. The book is organized into six main parts (Time, Career, Networking Systems, Work Spaces, Business, Personal Finances), and within these parts are 52 weekly lessons. So the book is laid out to get everything organized in a year. I didn't really care for this layout. For one, I don't think most people will actually use the book, week-by-week as laid out. Some people won't have need at all for some of the weekly lessons, and others will want to skip around and prioritize what lessons they need to work on first. And that is okay, there is a good table of contents that will allow you to find the areas you want to organize.
The actual weekly lessons contain a paragraph or two introduction on the importance of organizing that area, a check list of the week's goals, a motivating quote in a box, a few tips (one or two sentences each) and then a stay organized checklist that has things to do once a month, every 3-6 months, and once a year. Then there are a few lines to add notes. So there really isn't much "meat" to each chapter. The weekly goals are good, and if a person did them all, I'm sure they would be much better organized, but unfortunately, the book doesn't help a person achieve these goals if they are really stuck. For example, in the chapter on organizing your home office, one of the week's goals is to decide on shelving. The author states shelves are her favorite tools for increasing storage in a small space and that they give you plenty of storage space without taking up any floor space. True, but the book doesn't help the reader decide what the best shelving would actually be, or give guidance on choosing shelves. And that is the main reason I say this book is just okay, lots of goals to achieve, but not much to help you achieve them. Lots of tips, but very simple without a lot of detail.
Can a person use this book to become better organized? Yes, as I said, if you actually did all of the weekly goals, you would be much more organized. However, many people would skip weeks because not relevant to their situation, and many people would need additional help to actually achieve all of the goals.
So if you want a book of organizing tips, laid out in 52 categories, get this book. Combine it with other organizing references and I'm sure you'll get organized and be happy you did.
I have two of Ms. Berry's Organize Now books. There is some crossover between this one and Organize Now, Simplify Your Space and Life. If you work, or own your own business, this is a book that can help you begin to get organized in that aspect, and stay organized.
