I like to try books with lower ratings. I often don’t agree with high ratings when everyone loves a story, and sometimes I like books that no one likes. That was not the case with this one.

I found it difficult to care about the characters. Some of that was the poor choice of words that often pulled me from the fantasy and distracted from the storytelling... the emphasis on telling. The rest, they didn’t feel real to me. I wasn’t getting lost in the story of these two men; I was simply reading the words telling me about them.

There’s potential here, but sadly, it wasn’t met. The blurb holds more promise than the story could fulfill. I think it could, too, fulfill that is, if given more time in revisions and the love of a tight editor. So, overall, while this story is only “ok” it won’t deter me from trying another story by J. Rocci.

This interested me, but I felt dropped into the middle of a complicated story, and thus missing too much.
