The CV

Rate this book
Read Lord Sugar's CV, with its extracts from his bestselling autobiography What You See is What You Get, and discover what it takes to make a true entrepreneur.

Alan Sugar was born in 1947 and brought up on a council estate in Clapton, in Hackney. He started spotting money-making opportunities as a kid, engaging in activities as diverse as selling surplus 35mm film to schoolmates (undercutting the photographic shops by 50%) and making and selling his own ginger beer. At the age of nineteen he set up his own company; through his CV we see how Amstrad's groundbreaking ventures in hi-fi and computers made him the darling of the stock exchange. The breadth of his experiences is apparent, from buying Tottenham Hotspur FC and exposing corruption in the football industry to starring in the BAFTA-winning television show The Apprentice; from his appointment as Enterprise Champion, advising the government on small business and enterprise, to his elevation to the peerage.

This book is an extract from Sugar's full autobiography and as such there's no a lot of substance to it. I'm sure if I was to read the full version, it'd be a fascinating read - Sugar is a highly innovative and clever man and I'd love to read about how he got to where he is in more detail!

He might not come across as a nice person, but there’s no doubting his story of success! This short version of Alan Sugar’s life is truly inspirational. It shows how a boy from a council estate had such a strong enterprising spirit that he earned more than his father very early on. His ability to spot opportunities like photographing his neighbors and their families and filling old film cartridges with new film as well as selling scrap material to the rag and bone man show how he was prepared to work hard and smart for his success.

This is an okay book if you are completely new to writing a CV and have no idea where to start. It explains the basics in a simple way, and that makes it easy to follow. At the same time, if you already have some experience, you will probably find yourself skimming a lot of familiar ground. I think beginners will get value out of it, especially for structure and presentation ideas, but more experienced readers might feel like it does not push far enough. It sits in that middle zone of being helpful but not very exciting.

I have had this to read for quite a while and when going through my books I saw it and gave it a go. Its only a quick read and a copy of his CV and qualifications and experience up to 2009 but I learnt a lot and didn't realise how much he had done and how he achieved it. I knew a bit about Amstrad and him from The Apprentice series but hats off to him after reading this for the success he achieved.

The most interesting thing was why Amstrad was called Amstrad - you'll have to read the book to find out!

A great insight into the life of Alan Sugar. Only snippets of his life were in detail in this and it has made me what to read the full autobiography even though I'm not that fond of him as a person.
