There are plenty of Churchill quotation books but this one is a bit different in that there are some excellent less common photographs accompanying the words of wisdom from the great man. Many of the quotations do not sound familiar, too, although, as only to be expected, there are some of the usual ones about such as so few and so many and fighting them on the beaches but this does not detract from the overall selection.
There's a great photograph of Churchill as a suave young man in South Africa in 1900 and another with his homburg on and wearing rimless glasses painting at his easel and he is featured in uniform outside his tent in South Africa when a war correspondent. And he must have been one of Spy's (Leslie Ward) subjects for a cartoon in 'Vanity Fair' magazine for rather unusually he featured twice, both in stylish poses and both in 1900 and featured in the book.
On war, he comments 'No one can guarantee success in war, only deserve it.' And on the same subject he says, 'A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then askes you not to kill him.'
And amusingly he says, 'I am prepared to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter' and, equally amusingly, 'I know of no case where a man added to his dignity by standing on it.'
It is a lovely production and there are far worse things to read that a selection of Churchill quotes.
