This is a dark, why choose romance trilogy with morally grey antiheroes, a fierce, scarred heroine embracing her inner darkness and mind-bending plot twists from start to finish. Full TW is available inside the book.

I’m 55% in at Chapter 29. Leaving Rating Blank, cause I feel like that’s what I’ve gotten so far out of this so far. I haven’t DNF’d in a long time but for me I had to push myself through this boxset and in the end I do realize I most likely ended up stopping just before it gets good. But this is a very slow but rushing and to me it’s a shallow read. And by shallow I mean, there’s just no depth at all so far, it’s all ‘surface’ - I want to sink into this series and be enraptured by the depth of detail in this world but so far it’s like I’m still in the shallow end of pool. And in the ends the lack of depth is causing me a headache. It’s super confusing cause everything seems to be jumping around, and as a whole I can’t for the life of me click with the characters. I feel even at the 55% percent I still don’t know anyone. The story drags too much and has so much content stuffed and you feel like you’re drowning in filler, and to be honest so far everything just confusing to me right now. I was expecting this to be a dark read but (for me) there’s a lot of words but the darkness is just not dark enough.
Really struggled to finish this one. It had high potential if it weren't for the constant sex scenes which at times felt forced and written in for no reason at all. They distracted from the story itself and made me lose track of the story.
I feel like this is one of the best series i’ve ever read. I was sucked in from the beginning and was all in until the end. The characters are so well written, the storyline sucked me in, and i loved the unreliable narrative that constantly made me doubt what was real and what wasn’t. The relationships between the characters were beautifully done, i was on the edge of my seat for at least 60% of the time, and i had the best time. The playlists are also amazing, completely fit the vibes, and I’ll probably be raving about this series for the weeks to come. Time to go read J. Rose’s entire backlist ✨
Nah. I don't mind the idea of a smutty romance being set in an asylum, but Brooklyn was just an insufferable main character. You don't want to write a multi-POV book where your readers groan when they get back to the protagonist's POV and pray for it to end. It's just not good, I'm sorry.
Wanted to love this. Started out interesting and then lost some steam for me. I continually read reverse harem books thinking that one will be more my style and I just haven’t come upon one yet. I did love that the author incorporated playlists! That was fun!
this trilogy has taken a big place in my heart forever. i love this trilogy so much. everyone character are interested and different. brooklyn, my girl😭 she deserves better, i very glad that she found a family for herself. i really be sad when i read her chapter.
I didn’t like any of the characters-especially Hudson. I know the series is dark, and the characters aren’t supposed to be good people, but he was just downright abusive, and Brooklyn wasn’t much better. I didn’t like any of them enough to want to stick around to see how they were redeemed.
Why? This isn't romance. This is abusive crazy hate fucks. Hudson needs to be stabbed again with better aim and a sharper knife. Bleh. I read it.. There was no redemption, no chemistry it was just bleh and eww.
!!!!!!!!!!CHECK YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!! before picking this one up. It was a bit different than the usual dark romance since they're all legitimately insane and the story takes place in a mental health facility. Mental health is frequently discussed and the book features attempted suicide, suicide ideation/self harm, eating disorders, graphic violence, etc.
That stated, I quite liked this one.
Firstly it's a pretty hefty boi topping out at 800 pages (I mean....it IS a complete trilogy). The story follows our FMC, Brooklyn, and her harem of attractive, damaged, crazy, and outright villainous men. There is a good bit of smut and it's (in-)appropriately weird and, at times, unsanitary. It's a DARK romance after all.
Brooklyn and her harem meet and subsequently reside at a mental health facility called Blackwood Institute run by warden Miss Elizabeth White and lead psychiatrist Can't-remember-his-first-name Lazlo (or maybe that was his first name?). But not everything is as it appears to be at Blackwood and something more sinister lurks below the surface.
What I liked: *Eli - 'nuff said. It could've been just him and the books would've been good imo. *New, interesting concept. It's not often the majority of a series takes place in a mental health institution, nor for ALL the characters to have mental health issues to this degree AND also have to navigate a complicated love life WHILE ALSO figuring out Blackwood's secrets. SO MUCH HAPPENING! *Teegan - Another 'nuff said *The story starts gets right into it. The author doesn't waste anytime throwing you into the thick of it. *A good mystery to solve, and later, a good thriller. It's a multiple genres in one story kind of book and I liked it
What I didn't like: *HUDSON - I COULD NOT STAND THIS MAN and YES he is one of the MMCs. You know a character is unlovable when you start to root for the villains anytime he's involved. There was a single moment I actually agreed with his actions and I was SO MAD it was happening. Seriously J, he's the only reason you get 4 stars because I just can't with him.
Overall, definitely worth the read. Is it unbelievable? ofc it is. It's a crazy dark romance. So don't go into this expecting anything normal because you will be sorely disappointed.
*As an aside: I noticed some reviewers stopped because "how could Rio have so much control?" I'm just going to point out that had you continued reading YOU'D HAVE FOUND OUT. There were many secrets to be revealed and you've barely scratched the surface. Yes some of them were predictable but there's others that had my mouth falling open in shock.*
i’m not usually one to post a review on a book whether i loved or hated it.
this trilogy had me in a fucking chokehold from beginning to end. i related to brooklyn so many times throughout. there were times when i both loved and hated the mmc’s. but eli… fucking eli… i loved him from the moment he was introduced. imo, he had the most character development out of all the guys. his letter fucking broke me. i did not shed a single tear until i read his letter to brooklyn. i would love to read spin offs of all the characters’ lives prior to blackwood (maybe there is idk i haven’t looked into it)
i just finished this trilogy 10 minutes ago and i already wish i could read it again for the first time
I went in completely blind into this trilogy and WOW, this was a sad, tragic, beautiful ride. J. Rose wrote mental illnesses and the struggles so well. She is able to make you feel (suffer) with each of the main characters. I kept saying “these poor babies” through each book 😭 Brooklyn and her men are so incredibly strong and their family unit is perfect!
One thing I really wished I saw more of was more sexy scenes of Dom Kade!
This book is DARK and delves deep into mental illnesses, trauma, and torture. Be sure to read the trigger warnings.

Star: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Steam: 💋💋💋 Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Dark: 🌉**twilight:** its pretty dark, maybe a twinkling of lightness still.
This series is unlike any other I have read. It’s horrifyingly graphic, steamy and holds your attention beyond anything else, the characters are so diverse and unique in their own way. The blackmail/ lies and deception is just the tip of the iceberg Please be cautious of the trigger warnings. But definitely add this to your TBR
What a wild f*****g ride! I don't even know where to begin. I think this is my new top favorite series. It pulls every emotion you have! It throws every trigger in your face! It will make you question every moral you thought you had. Check the triggers, there's self harm, alot of suicide talk, nasty bloody smut scenes, mental health and torture, but if you can deal with it all the plot is there for you!! Even if I wanted to put this book down my brain wouldn't let me! I NEEDED to finish it, I NEEDED to know what happened with the main characters, it was an absolute necessity for me..
With all that being said and as I said in my review for the first book in this trilogy, this book is f*****d up and everything I love.
I absolutely loved this series. Seeing the growth of the characters and the plot was great. The plot twists always caught me off guard. I originally read this book thinking it was going to focus on the growth and healing of the main characters while it did do this it also managed to keep me on my toes. The only complaint I could have is the ending while yes it made sense and yes it was still a HEA I just wish it would’ve happened differently. I didn’t like the idea of half of the FMCs lovers were free out in the world while she was still in with 1 of the lovers. Like I said it made sense it just hurt to see the FMC being separated from a majority of her RH.
I really wanted to like this story but it feels like you never get much more than surface storyline and it flipping between 5 characters made it hard to follow. I got over 200 pages in and just couldn’t make myself read any more
This trilogy is very dark. It's sometimes incredibly hard to read, and I found it quite nauseating. The psychological and physical abuse is medieval, and it's hard to get through. As a rule I don't like the reverse harem trope but I was actually OK with this group, they all seemed very different and they all had different things going on so it didn't seem like a repetitive gang bang. The relationships the characters had together were only part of the story, almost like a horny holocaust. It's a heavy plot, so check the trigger warnings. I was happy with the ending.
It was okay. I made the mistake of reading this not long after “unhinged” series, and they have a very similar setting and plot, which made it predictable and towards the end I started to lose interest
It was so beautifully written and equally as tragic. Everything this group suffered really tugged on the heartstrings but I loved the characters so much and had the biggest soft spot for Eli 🥹
Welcome to Blackwood Institute, where the motto seems to be "Why go for therapy when you can have a full-blown horror movie experience instead?" Brooklyn West, our heroine with a past more twisted than a pretzel at Oktoberfest, is offered a delightful choice…three years of experimental treatment or a lifetime of prison. Talk about a “pick your poison” scenario..
Imagine being in a place where your roommates are all carrying more emotional baggage than a Kardashian at an airport….literally. Brooklyn is a convicted murderer with a penchant for dark thoughts, basically, she’s the life of the party! And then there’s Kade, Hudson, Eli, and Phoenix, her fellow inmates (I mean, “patients”) you’ll get my pun when you read. These guys are like a therapy group gone rogue, each with secrets so juicy they could fill a soap opera.
The first book is like the appetizer of a five-course meal, slow, a bit chewy, but you know the main course is going to knock your socks off. You just wait for it. By the time you get to the second and third books, you’re in a rollercoaster of plot twists that would make M. Night Shyamalan dizzy. Seriously, the plot twists are so mind-bending, I felt like I was in a game of Twister with my own sanity.
Speaking of characters, let’s chat about Seven, who, by the way, should come with a warning label: “Caution: May cause excessive swooning and existential crises, with a side of violence….-a lot of it.” His character development is like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, if the butterfly was also a tragic hero with a troubled past and a penchant for brooding in dark corners.
Brooklyn’s harem is the kind of dysfunctional family reunion that would make even the best therapists throw their hands up in despair. It’s like a game of “Who’s the biggest emotional train wreck?” And spoiler alert: they all win!
"We’re all immersed in the same seductive dance of devils and death."
This series...this world...immaculate. The further you read, the tighter you're held by it. It pulls you under like vines in the best way. The pacing was perfect, the characters were perfect, the plot was perfect, the setting was perfect - I will praise this series for the rest of my life. There's always another layer to be revealed at Blackwood, always another stone to be overturned. It gripped me from the very start and now, months after finishing, it still hasn't let go. These characters go through hell. Physical and psychological torture, leading to the occasional unreliable (perfect) narrator. Just when you think it's restricted to childhood, Brooklyn and [redacted] are thrust right back into a nightmare. Their journeys are beautiful.
Hudson's power is addictive, and his devotion to breaking through Brooklyn's barriers going back years is unmatched. Eli has one of the most heartbreaking minds and a life full of religious trauma; he shatters my heart. He and Brooklyn are each other's comfort when no one else understands. I can't say much about [redacted] without spoilers, but like Eli, he's a twin flame for Brooklyn (triplet flame?). Some people may find Kade to be straightlaced, but his need for control is intoxicating. He's put together, but in the way that you know there could be a hidden drop of blood on his suit. And finally Phoenix, who battles with his own problems while still being the one to make everyone smile.
Now time for the sob story. I was in an extremely bad mental place when I first read these, and it felt like coming home. This series and @jroseauthor genuinely filled me with such courage through the characters and their trauma, I sorted myself out and got back to living. So thank you, endlessly.
Holy cow. I mean... holy cow. What a read that was. I'm giving it a solid 4.5, though rounding up to 5.
First of all - PLEASE heed all trigger warnings. J. Rose was not kidding by saying this was a dark one. There were times when I was considering setting it aside, it almost became too much. But in saying that, it made a phenomenal read.
What a mindf*** of a read, too. I think I twigged to what might have been going on about 3/4's into the first book of the trilogy, but what J. Rose delivered was beyond. Like... such an incredible world she made, and it really messes with your head. I loved the links back into the history of psychology, too (being a ex-psych minor in Uni).
I love that the characters all had their own distinct personalities, and that it took time to learn them as a whole. In the end, the found family really complimented each other, and showed that that's what they became - a family. They were also highly relatable at times. Yes, I cannot claim to ever have dealt with anything near what these characters have dealt with, but I can almost see a part of myself in all of them.
Also, I realise how hard it is to write a review for this series without giving anything away.
I cannot wait to read the Sabre Security series after finishing this one off. The glimpses into the trio that head it up were enough to have me hooked.
