Fight for the Ruinous Powers...Well, figuratively speaking. They can provide you with an amazingly flexible army which can adapt to any foe and accommodate any type of game play.
You want to blast your foes from afar with Heavy Weaponry – Done.
You want to charge with a hard hitting army – Sure.
You want to fight at mid-range with weird weaponry that will despair your opponent – No problem.
You want to have a mighty Psychic advantage over your enemy – You can have it.
It’s truly your choice. You can use a generic army dedicated to the pantheon as a whole – chaos undivided – or focus your devotion to a single ruinous power. Both way the choices are immense, and you’ll find in this book rules to build and fight with the following legions: Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Word Bearers, Black Legion, World Eaters, Death Guard, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons.
Obviously there‘s a catch. All those options for your humblest units, all those Daemonic Gifts, each mighty unit, including new ones such as the Obliterator Cult or the Defiler, are costly. It is simply extremely easy to get excited with the wealth of options, the temptations of the chaos gods, and become hopelessly outnumbered on the battlefield. You will have to exert self-control and discipline choosing an army.
Please note that this is the 2002 Codex that replaced the one from 1999. To use it you’ll have to use the appropriate rules. Some options such as veteran skills, were only available for chaos armies at this time (the justification was that they had thousands of years to hone their skills), and this is one of the toughest armies you could field at that time. You will also find excellent background material, a map of the Eye of Terror area, profiles of many Iconic characters such as Typhus, Kharn the Betrayer, Abbadon the Despoiler, Ahriman, Fabius Bile e Lucius the Eternal, advice on building expanding and painting your army, etc.
It’s impossible not to mention the amazing and iconographic art of Karl Kopinski; Games workshop artists are usually very good, but Kopinski is simply great. He can invoke awe, disgust or despair with such ease that make his drawings of chaos space marines the image that I form in my mind’s eye when the servants of the Ruinous powers are mentioned. Other very good artists also created truly astonishing art for this codex, including: Alex Boyd, Paul Dainton and David Gallagher.
Warning. This Codex is amazing but if you're looking for 9th or 10th edition newer codices please this isn't the book for you, unless you're a collector or prefer to play with older editions.
