Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (Bengali: বঙ্কিম চন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়) ('Chattopadhyay' in the original Bengali; 'Chatterjee' as spelt by the British) was a Bengali poet, novelist, essayist and journalist, most famous as the author of Vande Mataram or Bande Mataram, that inspired the freedom fighters of India, and was later declared the National Song of India.

Chatterjee is considered as a key figure in literary renaissance of Bengal as well as India. Some of his writings, including novels, essays and commentaries, were a breakaway from traditional verse-oriented Indian writings, and provided an inspiration for authors across India.

মন দিয়ে কাহিনি শোনেন। নায়িকা গরিব ও অন্ধ। নায়ক একবার তাকে স্পর্শ করতেই সে নায়কের প্রেমে হাবুডুবু খেতে শুরু করে। জনদরদি নায়ক আবার অসহায় নায়িকার বিয়ে ঠিক করে এক দোজবরের সঙ্গে। বিয়েতে নায়িকার মত নেই। মত নেই তার হবু স্বামীর প্রথম পক্ষের স্ত্রীরও। নায়িকা সেই স্ত্রীর ভাইয়ের সাহায্যে বিয়ের আগে বাড়ি থেকে পালায়। এই মহান মদ্যপ ভ্রাতা আবার নায়িকাকে বিয়ে করতে চায়। নায়িকা ঘৃণাভরে প্রস্তাব প্রত্যাখ্যান করায় তাকে মহান ভ্রাতা একা ফেলে রেখে চলে যায়। নায়িকা পানিতে ডুবে মরতে চায়। তাকে বাঁচায় আরেক মহান লোক। সেই মহান লোক তাকে ধর্ষণ করতে যায়।এইবার নায়িকাকে বাঁচায় সাইড নায়ক। সাইড নায়ক নাকি নায়িকাকেই খুঁজছিলো! কেন জানেন? নায়িকা গরিব না। তার আসল বাবা মা প্রচুর ধনসম্পত্তির মালিক। সেই সম্পত্তি আবার ভোগ করছে আসল নায়কের পরিবার! সাইড নায়ক এসেছে লড়াই করে নায়িকাকে তার অধিকার ফিরিয়ে দিতে।সে এককালে আসল নায়কের সৎমাকে ভালোবাসতো। এখন সে নায়িকার প্রেমে পড়ে তাকে বিয়ে করতে চায়। এরপর নায়িকা সম্পত্তি ফেরত পায় কিন্তু সাইড নায়ককে বিয়ে করতে চায় না (তাকে আবার ফেরাতেও পারে না।) নায়কের বাড়ির মানুষ আবার চায় সে যেন নায়িকাকে বিয়ে করে। এতে করে তাদের সম্পত্তি হারাতে হবে না। নায়ক রাজি না। এক সন্ন্যাসী এসে আক্ষরিক অর্থেই বাণ মেরে নায়ককে নায়িকার প্রেমে ফেলে দ্যায়। নায়ক এখন সারাদিন পাগলের মতো নায়িকার নাম জপে। একদিকে নায়ক কাঁদে, অন্যদিকে নায়িকা কাঁদে। অবস্থা বুঝে সাইড নায়ক দুজনের মিলন ঘটিয়ে নিজে মহান হয়।( মহান হওয়াটাই সাইড নায়কদের নিয়তি।) সে কয়েক বছর পর ফিরে এসে দ্যাখে জন্মান্ধ নায়িকার চোখ ভালো হয়ে গেছে! সন্ন্যাসী একমাস ওষুধ খাইয়ে তাকে ভালো করে ফেলেছে! খুশির এখানেই শেষ না। নায়ক নায়িকা তাদের ছেলের নাম রেখেছে সাইড নায়কের নামে (সাধু! সাধু!)। নিজের মহত্ত্বে আপ্লুত হয়ে সাইড নায়ক আবার পথে বেরোয়।

ভাবছেন কোনো গাঁজাখুরি বাংলা সিনেমার গল্প শোনালাম? এটা মহান সাহিত্যিক বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় এর মহান উপন্যাস "রজনী"র প্লট! পড়ার পর থেকে এখনো বিপর্যস্ত অবস্থায় আছি। অন্য কোনো বইতে মন বসছে না।

শচীন্দ্রের সাথে রজনীর বিয়ে না হলেই ভালো হতো।
অমরের চরিত্র বেশি ভালো লেগেছে। তার কি ফিলোসোফিক্যাল কথাবার্তা!! 
বঙ্কিমের গল্পের মধ্যে প্রণয় থাকে, বির্সজন থাকে, ক্ষমা, ক্ষোভ এবং মাঝেমাঝে প্রাপ্তিও থাকে।
সাধু ভাষা অদ্ভুত রকমের সুন্দর, মার্জিত!

Bankim and his social satires are seeped into contradictions. On one side an ordinary blind girl becomes desirable when she becomes wealthy and on the other side a stranger comes about to help an unknown gain her lost wealth and stature. Noone even looks at this blind girl and is ready to marry her off to an old guy with one wife already. How she runs away and gets dumped on an island by a cruel man. How a stranger finds her and brings her back and makes his purpose in life to bring to her what was rightfully hers. In all this the man – the one she loves and assumes a husband suddenly desires for her and goes mad pining for her. All this sounds very strange and appears to be happening only to form the story. The characters get stranger when a holy man makes a blind girl see with one month of treatment, relating the blind girl to her dead father and his brother’s property through a 20 year old police report, and a young beautiful girl marries an old man suitable to be her grandfather instead of younger man she was engaged to. But in all this strangeness the reality is not far, we have heard of such things and seen them happening in Indian society. All this is acceptable and forms a strong plot for a reader who like extremes and unexpected events making the story interesting.

'I know that beauty is a mere illusion of the beholder. Beauty is not in the person, but in the eyes of the beholder - otherwise, why do people perceive it in different degrees in different people? Why don't we all fall in love with the same person?'

অনেকদিন পর আবার লিখিবার প্রয়াস....

যাহারা সংস্কৃতমিশ্রিত বাংলা চর্চা করিয়া থাকেন বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যয় তাহাদিগকে সাহিত্য জগতে ভিন্ন আনন্দ প্রদান করিয়া থাকেন ইহাতে আর শঙ্কা কি......

বঙ্কিম লইয়া কিছু বলিব এহেন দুঃসাহস করিবার উপক্রম করিতে উদ্যত হইলেই আতকাইয়া উঠি।

কিন্তু, পুস্তকপাঠ পরিসমাপ্তিতে প্রতিক্রিয়া উল্লেখ করিয়া রাখিলে ভবিষ্যতের জন্য বড় সুবিধা হয়।

মনুষ্যের বিভিন্ন বিশেষণসমূহ পাত্র/ব্যক্তিভেদে ভিন্নভাবে গৃহীত হইয়া থাকে। ইহাকে সৃষ্টিকর্তার অপার মহিমা বলিয়া মানিয়া লইতে হইবে। অন্যথায় গোলযোগের আর অন্ত থাকিত না। জাগতিক বিষয়াদির উর্ধ্বে গমন করিয়া, যাহা কেবলি ব্যক্তি বা স্থানে সীমাবদ্ধ তাহার মোহ ত্যাগ করিতে পারিলেই নিত্যানন্দ লাভ হইবে। লেখক সম্পূর্ন পুস্তক জুড়িয়া এই বক্তব্যটি বোঝাইবার কোনো ত্রুটি করেন নাই।

আরেকখানি বিষয় বোঝাইতে গিয়া সাহিত্যিক নির্দিষ্ট শ্রেনির ক্ষেত্রে অত্যন্ত কটাক্ষ করিয়াছেন, যাহা তুলিয়া ধরিতে গেলে অনেকখানি লেখা বাড়াইতে হইবে। তবে এতটুকু বলিতেই পারি, জ্ঞ্যান অনন্ত, যাহাকে কখনো সীমাবদ্ধ করা যাইবে না এবং যাহা লইয়া অহংকার করাও যাইবে না।

গল্প বর্ননায় লেখক বহুবিধ কথকের আশ্রয় লইয়াছেন যাহা কিনা আত্বস্থ করিতে বেশ বেগ পাইতে হইতে পারে।

আশা রাখি পাঠকগণ "রজনী" হইতে এক অপরিমেয় আনন্দ লাভ করিবেন।

রজনী! অন্ধ রজনী।
হ্যা রজনী নামের এই বালিকাটি অন্ধ। একজন অন্ধের দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে পৃথিবীটা কেমন, ভালবাসার অনুভূতি কি রকম। এগুলো সুন্দরভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে এই বইয়ে।
সবচেয়ে আকর্ষণীয় বিষয় হচ্ছে লেখক বইটা লিখেছেন চারজনের দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে। কাহিনীটাও সুন্দরভাবে সাজানো। তাই আমার কাছে ভালো লেগেছে।
